I really love how Sony doesn't give a damn about trends and still provide the still relevant 3.5mm headphone jack and microSD card support. But as much as I like this Mk3 Xperia 1, I'll stick with last year's Mk2. The Mk3 has a bigger 4,500mAh battery compared to the Mk2's 4,000mAh and yet the Mk3 doesn't show significant battery endurance rating improvement than its predecessor. It does show that even Sony couldn't tame the Snapdragon 888 heat, it really is literally a hot beast. I said to myself before that I'm not going to buy 2021 flagship smartphone if Sony couldn't cool down the Snapdragon 888 chipset and this phone proves it.
Why do people still need microSD today. It's not like you need more space than let's say 256 gb.I have 128 gb and when I set up everything and install every app and game I need I am left with 100 gb.I can't even fill that..
Refreshing to see Sony is elegantly different with their Xperia offerings. Adaptive charging and battery care adds value IMO -- not everybody wants you to have your handset for three + years.

Couldn't agree more. Both of them are still relevant in 2021 and beyond. I have stopped embracing wireless audio altogether and now going back all wired. I also don't use cloud storage and the phone's internal storage to keep all my files, which is super useful when I'm changing phones.

Looking for a phone with these 10 features. The first 5 are must-haves, and I don't buy that these are "super enthusiast" asks. The other 5 are nice to have, but could live without some of them. The Xperia 1 iii has ALL TEN. But name me another current phone with even just the top 5 must haves, available in the US market that doesn't require custom ROM building, etc. I'll wait. - dualSIM (physical SIM, not eSIM) - expandable memory - 3.5mm jack w/ at least 24bit DAC - physical two stage camera shutter - no notch / punch hole - auto eye focus for humans / animals and focus tracking - 4K screen - 120 Hz refresh rate - fast charging / wireless charging / reverse charging - GG Victus glass screen
A bit disappointed that the battery health features were not even glanced over. Despite the mediocre battery life, there is a strong case to be made for software that preserves the battery in the long run. My old Lenovo laptop had this feature 10 years ago which prevented it from charging and sitting at 100% while plugged in (which is 99% of its life). This laptop battery is still in good health 10 years later and can provide more than 4 hours of runtime. People need to undeerrstand that that sort of features are not only a gimmick but have practical benefits. Most other flagships rape their batteries with excessive amount of heat and wattage pumped in them. The sole reason my old Oneplus 3T needed replacement was the battery which was absolutely destroyed within 2 years of service.
Most people think it's normal for the battery to degrade after a year, especially Samsung users. Unfortunately, some don't see the bigger picture and continue upgrading every year, while some switched to an iPhone because Samsung stinked them badly (lags and hangs after a year). Now they won't switch to Android as they think it's inferior due to shitty Samsung flagships. I keep telling them that it's Samsung, not Android and showing them my old Sony phone still running like new after 4 years but I guess nothing will change their mind.

So true. At the end of the day, a device is useless if it cannot sustain a day of average usage without charging imo. They only think about pumping the battery with fast charging, which is a very bad quick solution. The proper solution should be preserving battery life in long run.
@@Jeff-lc2xd the bad part is I ended up with a Oneplus 9 Pro simply due to the Sony not being available and I had to change my phone as it suffered an accident. Still, I'm using the lesser charger from the Oneplus 3T, which is still plenty fast but doesn't heat up the phone nearly as much, and since there is no battery care software, I just charge it up to 60-70% which is enough for 24 hours of my usage. Hopefully this will make it last longer.

Excellent review! I didn't realize it was only 345 Nits. That needs to almost double on the MK4. The slower battery charge speeds compared to the too fast competition is fine, as long as the lithium is healthy after a year or two. I think there were tradeoffs with this phone and hopefully the more efficient and powerful Snapdragon 8 can help make this thing perfect next round.
Wait, really? Are you sure? I have seen a ton of other reviews saying exactly what you're saying too. Why would GSMArena give the wrong info? @@MrModikoe He says the phone is in 60 hz when it switches to 4k. He doesn't say if it's in 1080 or 2k when 120hz is activated. A few issues with it but I still like it. Have previously used the Samsung Note 8, S10, and now I'm currently using the S21+ and Sony Xperia 1 III concurrently. Always loved the 21:9 aspect ratio and was considering the Xperia 1 II 2 years back, but held off for the Mk III for it's 70mm to 105mm upgrade. The Mk III is a good phone and I prefer it over my S21+ (mainly because I'm bored of Samsung) and the Sony phone is vastly different than any other Android phone on the market, but there are some issues with it which many reviewers do not cover (basically most or all of the reviews on UA-cam). #1: Camera Eye / Face Lock On Basically the AF and lock-on are good, and the 20fps with re-autofocus is working well. But I've found that in certain instances, the face / eye lock on and tracking do not focus correctly. When the option for this is enabled, the camera can detect my dog's eye 100% of the time, but does not focus on the eye.... It focues on his snout or nose. This causes the image to be visibly out of focus. However, turning the eye / face lock on feature off, and simply tapping on my dog's face solves this issue. Also, the object tracking works well too! #2: Camera 20FPS As said earlier, the 20FPS works well and the re-autofocus does work too. However, in the default auto mode (meaning in BASIC mode), when using 20FPS, the shutter is definitely too slow for medium to fast moving objects (such as a dog walking at normal speeds in good lighting conditions like in a living room). This holds true for humans as well. Basically, the images will turn out blurry because the shutter speed was kept slow (1/40 to 1/80) while keeping a low ISO too. This is not an issue in absolutely bright conditions like at a dog park with direct sunlight, but anything else and the phone will revert to prefer a slower shutter speed to keep the ISO low. For an average user, this would be an issue, but having some experience using manual mode on DSLRs, this slow shutter issue can be avoided by using the phone's MANUAL mode and setting the ISO and Shutter Speed manually while enabling 20FPS. However, it is understandable that the masses may find this tedious or too complex for smartphone photography. #3 Camera - Videography and Cinema Pro [Basic Camera Mode - Not Cinema Pro] One issue I found the most irritating is the fact that when taking a video using the front facing camera, you cannot swipe / toggle to the back camera like how you can do on any Samsung phone. If you're taking a video using the front camera, that's the only camera you can use, and the same thing goes for the back cameras. Furthermore, when taking a video using the back cameras, regardless of whatever resolution you choose (4k, 1080 60, 1080, 720), you can't switch cameras while recording. I know for a fact that this is possible on my old Samsung S10 (only in FHD - definitely not possible in 4K 60), but at least they had the option to switch cameras while recording). Also, while the Mk III can clearly record in 4K up to 120FPS, the option is not available in BASIC mode (the default camera application). It only offers a max of 4K 30FPS (or something, but definitely not 60FPS). To use 4K 60FPS or 120FPS, you have to use the Cinema Pro application. More on that below. [Cinema Pro] On a side not, I find their menu system weird for a smartphone. For instance, everything starts with a project. To create a video, a project has to be opened first. If certain settings change, a new project may have to be opened. An example: using the 24mm lens with 4K 60FPS, a project is created. Using another lens, another project has to be created, using a different frame rate, a project has to be created, and it continues. However, as good as the ability to record in 4K 60FPS or 120FPS is, the Cinema Pro application is basically useless for the main reason that ISO CANNOT BE ADJUSTED ONCE YOU START RECORDING. I own a Sony A7 and I play around with the video mode sometimes. I know that during recording, it's mainly the ISO that's adjusted to compensate for different lighting conditions on the fly (not shutter or aperture). In Cinema Pro's case, since ISO AND SHUTTER SPEED cannot be adjusted once records starts, you're basically fixed with one exposure. If you're outside and point to the sky, you're basically stuck with a blown out screen. If you're indoors and point to a darker place, you're stuck with underexposed frames. That being said, unless I'm in an environment with consistent lighting, I'm stuck with the BASIC default app and limited to either 4K 30FPS, or 1080 60FPS (I normally stick with the 1080 60). #4 General Usage I'm quite sure it's because of the screen, but the phone gets hot, really hot. Compared to the same tasks on my S21+, the Sony definitely gets way hotter then it should. I attribute this to the 888 chip as well but who knows. Things like Lightroom, transferring files to the SD card, UA-cam, Facebook, etc. Also, just to add on the burst photos with 20FPS. When viewing them using Google photos (the default photo viewer), there's a bug with scrolling between the bursts. This is prominent with bursts of 20 images, or 100 images. But it's a small issue. Also, with the attributes about the camera mentioned above, using the Pro mode for everything photography related really brings out the best of the cameras, albeit 12 megapixels. Having a steady hand helps too, seeing as for most shots, there's a weird issue that the phone predere long exposure times for images that are clearly in daytime. Maybe it's related to the fact that there is no dedicated night mode or for HDR, and that the phone auto detects the scene you're in. Basically expect long exposure times when there shouldn't be any. Just to add, in night mode, with a steady hand, the images are as good as those on my S21+ with its 64 megapixel sensor. One thing I have to give credit to is the colour accuracy of the phones cameras. Compared to Samsung and Iphones (both old and new), this is by far the most accurate representation of the original scene. Grass looks like grass at the dog park (on the Samsung, its always oversaturated). One other thing, their flashlight is oddly not at it's brightest setting and this cannot be adjusted by the user.... Finally, and weirdly enough, there's no option to turn Fast Charging off..... I don't like to fast charge my phones because I like them to stay away from heat as much as possible, so I have no choice but to use a slow charger (5V 1A or 1.5A). Overall, I still appreciate something different as compared to Samsung's UI. This phone has many issues which I believe are software related (toggle 120HRZ, toggle night mode, toggle front/back camera while recording, toggle fast charging, toggle NFC on/off, toggle flashlight brightness, etc). As for their hardware, it's almost perfect. All that they're missing is a configurable extra button (currently the Google assistant button is fixed) and higher megapixels on all cameras. With all it's shortcomings, I'm still using this as the daily driver over my S21+ (the S21+ is a damn good phone fyi. It's really refined - better screen, better camera in most cases, etc).
4K 120Hz 1000nit AMOLED panel with an SD 888 5G would absolutely demolish that 4500mAh battery :( We can kinda see why Sony is doing this... still not the phone Sony needs to rise to the top
Yes , its a bit of a shame really , the phone has a lot of hardware features other brands have abandoned/cheaped out on , like the headphone jack and SD card for a start. Sony imo should give the 4K screen the ass(its a gimmick anyway imo) , give us a 2k screen with 120 hz , and give us the rest of the feature set it currently has ,and if sony is going to continue with the annoying tall narrow form factor , at least give us a full sized version as well like a galaxy note size with all the flagship features(bar the gimmicky 4K screen) and i would buy one , and I’m sure many others would too. I would never buy it with the current narrow screen realestate.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the 4k screen is a gimmick. I mean, putting 4k on a 6'5 screen ... like why Sony ? Only for marketing purposes I guess
It really dependes where you live. People closer to the Equator (eg: Brazil) usually complain about low brightness displays. With my previous phone the screen was barely bright for me in the summer, and people from this regions complained about the screen being unusable.
Im sony fan and i know what is it when it comes to 4k all sony phones doesn't offer 4k on every mode and that's the way you should use your phone for battery life reasons. I've been waiting for your review on this phone, patiently, of course. I ain't gonna lie, I was told that the speakers on the 1 III were apparently 40% louder than the 1 II, assuming this's with the Dolby Atmos feature enabled. I'd expect them to be quite loud, but knowing that they're lacking a bit, or meh, on lows is surprising. And about the charging speed; 42% in 30 minutes with a 30W charger is a bit disappointing, but Sony know what they're doing; I think the charging speed isn't the fastest 'cause it's how Sony prolong the battery life; by not charging the phone too fast.
You're right, for a 4500mAh battery (16.7Wh at 3.7V) if it actually charged at 30W it should be way further along than 42% after 30 mins. I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't even charging at 20W
a real reviewer named bens gadget reviews on youtube when asked if the speakers are comparable to the mi 11 ultra (which has the best speakers on a phone currently next to the ROG 5) he replied and said "It's better because location is better. But Mi 11 Ultra louder". other reviewers who have credibility also mentioned that the speakers are pretty good, and the only complaint i heard was that they get distorted in the highs when on max volume, but that was by one reviewer

The screen isn't at 120hz all the time, only when it's in use but if battery life is important then just turn it back to 60.. normal people will easily get a full day out of this unless your gaming loads.
Can you clarify what you mean about the screen resolution, because my understanding is that the phone is locked at 4k at all times (with 60hz and 120hz refresh rate)?
Like its previous 4K screen models it probably only works in certain apps or modes , previous sony 4K display models where in 1080 p most of the time iirc. Personally i think on such a small screen it is a bit of a gimmick even when it does work . The two k screen on my old note 4 i put a magnifying glass over the display and i could not see an individual pixel , i had to double magnify it to see a single pixel and even then it was difficult with my eyes three inches away from the screen. As for the 60 or 120 hz , if you ran 4K locked at 120 hz all the time i suspect you’d probably be out of battery in 3 0r 4 hours i suspect , this is why 4K is very limited , not to mention the overheating problems 4K brings with it in some circumstances..

I am certainly considering my options.
120 refresh rate isn't needed for videos which is the main reason you'd need/want 4k resolution. The difference would be imperceptible, so saving some battery life is sensible
how many stops of dynamic range? I never saw the actual stats on this. Why is the 105 mm lens more fuzzy? I suspect it's because the limited field of view makes more of it out of focus, and compared to a wider lens? Am I wrong? With a longer lens, you need to pay super close attention on what exactly you want to focus on? No HDR in the photos, but it allows 20 RAW photos per second?
The 70mm is f/2.3 and the 105 becomes f/2.8. On a sensor that small, 1/2.9", your DOF is huge. F/2.8 is the equivalent DOF to ~f/20 on full frame. Just look at the portrait they took with the 105mm. Its not exactly blowing away the background. But something strange is definitely happening with the telephoto though. It looks like atmospheric distortion. 20fps is only on the wide, I think it's 11fps on the other lenses.
@@pixels_per_inch I saw his videos. He says "sometimes the footage coming out of the telephoto is wavy" towards the end of the video while showing wavy telephoto footage in a 21:9 aspect ratio. Indicating to me that it was probably shot in the cinema pro app.

@@pixels_per_inch Please are you able to link me to a source that says that 4K is not enabled all the time? I tried to find it. I am conflicted. According to GSMArena, the phone only has mediocre screen brightness, and does not support 120hz@4K. However, I have not seen any other reviewer say that about the refresh rate Some say that the screen brightness reaches 1300 nits and is more than enough, as well How come there is no clarity as to what the actual specs are? It sounds slightly bizarre to me that some reviewers are saying completely different things from one another
Xiomi redmi note 9 pro (myphone) runs at 470 nits max he said the xperia goes up to over 500nits in bright conditions which is average. So the brightness is not at all bad however it could have been better.
Anything Over 1000 i think is obsolete for a phone but a 800 nit display works best for the human eye because the higher the brightness the easier it will be able to produce hdr content something which this phone struggles with. So sony should lower their resolution to 2560x1440 and get their nits to 850. That would be ideal if they also added variable refresh rate and a 5000mah battery.

Congratulations GSMARENA for achieving the feat of going to display reliable information for 10,000 mobiles, You have become history today for being the biggest encyclopaedia of mobile information. Kudos 👍👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks for this review. I have been watching the Sony III line for a while and was curious about the 4k display. This review has clearly steered me to waiting for the review of the Sony 5 III instead. The 1 III is priced at ~$1300 USD and the 5 III is rumored at ~$980 USD. Given what I heard here, I will wait for the 5 III and compare it to the Asus Zenfone 8 & ROG Phone 5.
If you don't care about the very high pixel density while watching videos or viewing pictures, matte glass on the back, slightly larger screen size, wireless charging, it having 12GB of RAM instead of 8GB as well as 256GB internal storage vs 128GB and slightly worse speakers, you are definitely better off with the 5iii, especially if you prefer the smaller size
@@pixels_per_inch oh wow, that's not impressive. I hope GSMARENA reads your comment and corrects it's statement because it affected my decision to opt for the Samsung z flip 3 instead.
I think 888 will be cooled down a little bit when the phones get Android 12.
yeah, the 4k 120hz on all the time ain't helping the endurance rating. I wonder if there's a way to turn it off XDDD

@@pixels_per_inch enthusiast who are shilling out for that kind of device tend to care. Average consumers want just a device to work smoothly so they can surf the Web, lie everybody how great their life is on social media and watch porn. 😁

#1: Camera Eye / Face Lock On
Basically the AF and lock-on are good, and the 20fps with re-autofocus is working well.
#2: Camera 20FPS
As said earlier, the 20FPS works well and the re-autofocus does work too.
#3 Camera - Videography and Cinema Pro
[Basic Camera Mode - Not Cinema Pro]
One issue I found the most irritating is the fact that when taking a video using the front facing camera, you cannot swipe / toggle to the back camera like how you can do on any Samsung phone.
[Cinema Pro]
On a side not, I find their menu system weird for a smartphone.
#4 General Usage
I'm quite sure it's because of the screen, but the phone gets hot, really hot.

Nice video. Just 2 quick question for you. Without dial into the Photo Pro app, when you launch the camera and wanted to take the picture at the moment, how is the quality of the picture? Would you recommend this phone in 2023?
Flawless review,great! Thanks 👍
Review is bulshit, full of lies
@@dejan110782, in Tech Nick test, Xperia 1III max brightness is 1,300 nits. Why gsmarena only 560 nits?
FINALLY I have been waiting for a phone that has a SD slot, 4k 60fps (AND ITS got bonus video HDR) which is awesome and a 3.5mm jack. No bloat like Samsung and it has a great screen. I am buying this for sure.
edit:People here complaining the battery is going to be no good because of the screen, well sure like any phone if you pump the brightness it's going to take a hit. The screen isn't at 120hz all the time, only when it's in use but if battery life is important then just turn it back to 60.. normal people will easily get a full day out of this unless your gaming loads.
Disappointing that when zooming in with telephoto lens when recording, there is haziness.
love your reviews! keep it up!
How did GSMArena of all people miss that this phone IS in fact running 4K60 or 4K120 based on your settings? It is NOT either or.
Looks nice, waiting for Xperia 5 iii to launch tho
Can you clarify what you mean about the screen resolution, because my understanding is that the phone is locked at 4k at all times (with 60hz and 120hz refresh rate)?
when is running at 120hz, drop the resolution to 1080p.
4k is on (i imagine) on videos, or multimedia kind of apps.
read the review on gsmarena.com
@@mikldude9376 People who already have the phone are complaining about the lack of screen resolution options, saying it's always locked at 4k. This does drain the battery much quicker than necessary for regular use.
@@nt6351 The 4K is only on when it can play 4K content so videos in YT for instance. Sony then dial down to 60Hz as most videos only play at 24/30/60FPS, so no need to run at 120Hz as it just burns battery and still would only get lower frame rates. For most of the time it will be 120Hz and 1080p, I have the Xperia 1 MK1 and that only uses 1080p for most things.
My old(?) XZ Premium seems to have 4K enabled all the time, even if it is not displaying any actual content in 4K
Curious how it compares to Galaxy S22 or S23 when it comes to movie making or quick snaphots.
As I understand it, this phone doesn't have variable refresh rate so it's at 120Hz all the time. So if this info is correct that it doesn't do 4K at 120Hz then it's never at 4K because the 120Hz is fixed.
It is a fixed 4k 120hz screen. You can't lower the resolution or the Hz on the screen. And it's a 21:9 screen as well
Techspurt said that it's stuck in 4k res but the refresh could be adjusted to 60hz
@@rlaw8658 yeah my bad you can lower Hz to 60 but can't lower the resolution which would be better if you could lower to 1440p or something to save battery
@@xAuzzieGamer93 1080p isn't bad at all, too. It could've saved a lot of battery when it is needed. 5G already drains a lot of battery. But with 4k and 120hz display, it will drain faster. I was surprised 1 III wasn't that behind of competition. I was expecting lower battery endurance
How is the headphone jack performance? Amp performance?
I think its a 24bit by 300hz. Meaning that you can play iem in a good quality. For wireless, they all the same. Wireless can only support 19bit by 98hz. Volume I think its a 30mw. Not as much as a dedicated mp3,but more than phones .

I'm a little curious why all of these channels are doing a review of the phone when it has been stated that these are pre-production models. Seems to be a little.. Against the norm. Never see an iPhone or Samsung being reviewed and criticized when they aren't the final product yet.
Love the color configuration 😍😍😍
You get 4k and 120hz in apps that support it. With a monitoring app you can easily find out which apps support that
I have just ordered mine; excited to see what this phone holds for me, the cinematography app looks amazing!
Wow the 4k videos look really good!!
Headphones jack at these times is really high definition sound!!
oh man I'm so torn. I originally wanted to buy this phone to replace my note 10+ 5G but on second thoughts I'm now debating if I should just order the note 20 ultra 5G, or perhaps even wait to see if there will be a note 22.
I like many features of the Xperia 1 iii like the physical fingerprint sensor, toolless simcard tray, headphone jack, and the narrower design to name a few, but I'm still not entirely sold on it especially with such a price tag.
Same. I'm stuck between the note 20 ultra (& the fact that you can stream Xbox games) & the 1 iii which has superior ppi. Last time I checked screen repair techs wouldn't touch Sony phones..
While I like many of you don't like that most phone designers have done away with the headphone jack,I will say that my Galaxy S21 has been a pretty good phones,so I am always curious as to how well these Sony phones stack up compared to the Galaxy S series phones.
@@E_Ten It's a bug with the EIS in basic mode. Cinema Pro footage looks fine (check out iPhonedo's video)
@@pixels_per_inch I saw his videos. He says "sometimes the footage coming out of the telephoto is wavy" towards the end of the video while showing wavy telephoto footage in a 21:9 aspect ratio. Indicating to me that it was probably shot in the cinema pro app.
@@E_Ten I watched it again and you're right. Now I'm not sure what's causing it.
It's not that i have a problem with this guy giving the review but he's low key bashing this Xperia, but when you look at Samsung or iPhone reviewers they never bash the phone in the review video, yet Sony phones in general are way better than every phone out in the market ::the hate is real::
@CYB3R2K30 you never owned s Sony phone
@CYB3R2K30 then you should already know Sony is top at fastest phone game graphic phone and cameras, this review guy only talks about and only shows the camera on auto more he doesn't give a detailed inspection on what the camera can really do in manual mode or cinema mode, but you should know this already you had "3 Sony phones"
@CYB3R2K30 "great response" all i understood was bla bla bla. just by having a head phone Jack, notification light a micro SD slot up to 1T and the phone brings a full charger set something that the Samsung or iPhone no longer has 360 sound and display ( let's not even get into the graphics speed and the actual camera setting on the phone) it's a win for me
Many other major reviewers contradicting your claims about 1- 4K running only some of the time and the phone will decide when to enable it, and 2- if 4K is enabled, it will choose to drop to 60 hz and ignore your own setting for 120 hz. Some folks in the comments also contradicting them. Are we certain both of these claims are true?
1 is correct, 4K is enabled when supported apps are detected.
2 is incorrect, it is possible for the panel to run both 4K and 120hz at the same time
@@pixels_per_inch Please are you able to link me to a source that says that 4K is not enabled all the time? I tried to find it. There's a vague statement on the Sony site which doesn't exactly say that. Some reviewers like Marques Brownlee explicitly say it's fixed at 4K all the time, period, full stop.
I know that point 2 was incorrect from this video since literally everyone else said you get 4K/120hz at the same time - including GSMArena themselves but not in this video.

Tech reviewers are so fickle. I'd appreciate a reviewer that has a set criteria they universally assess with every phone to provide context. I don't think it's intentional, but I only trust actual users these days.
That is why I only watch indie tech UA-camrs like Juan Bagnell and TK Bay to name just two. Forget popular tech influencers, they provide honest-to-God realistic review.
I trust users on r/SonyXperia
@@creatorbydefault For sure!
yow....if you want a real detailed review of this phone (the real ones, not bias...) just search sony365(former btekt channel) and Tech Nick. funny that these popular channels are getting flat for their reviews. this video should be first impression not a review either......
I am conflicted. According to GSMArena, the phone only has mediocre screen brightness, and does not support 120hz@4K. However, I have not seen any other reviewer say that about the refresh rate
Some say that the screen brightness reaches 1300 nits and is more than enough, as well
How come there is no clarity as to what the actual specs are?
I have no idea who's correct, I've seen some youtubers show the screen running at 120 hz at 4K too

Do share what you end up getting. You got great tastes in phones
Actually, I don't understand why Sony didn't offer a 128GB version. It's probably be $100 cheaper and the price would be on par with other flagships
Staying original and outside the crowd that's Sony.
