    I'm not seeing the controllers as gimmicks at all. No need to charge the controllers seperately given they will have significantly more battery life than the device itself. The high res display is for media consumption, which makes sense. The Ally's battery sucks for gaming, but is great for media consumption. The Legion Go has an even bigger battery. The weight will absolutely be talked about in real-world reviews. Its heavier than 2 full size Nintendo Switches, making it more of a table top device than a handheld.

      It is cool, but charging inside a case is a little scary to me. Windows devices can wake from sleep sometimes when you don’t want them too. If you keep the case closed there is a definite chance you could burn out your device.

      I'm sure the charging is meant for when the device is powered off. But even then, if you know windows, you know you can control actual sleep, hibernate and wake specifics. Mine don't wake unless I tell them to.

      @@charlestannehill7537 yeah to the power user, it’s no biggie- however stock setup though, it might have stuff like letting the wireless adapter wake the device, etc- so it’s possible out of the box it could wake up. @@baldsealion that's why users need to learn about what they're operating and using. I understand people want everything simple and easy. Buts it's also made people dumb as shit. This pc gaming. Not console. And to expect it to work like that is asinine. If you're dumb enough to spend $700 on a portable handheld gaming pc in this economy and you don't understand what you're buying and what entails it, you deserve for the apu to burn out. Because people are creatures of habit, and I'm sure they live the rest of their lives the same way on autopilot. You are buying high end tech. Not a 90's Gameboy.
      Tbh, in this video, you just sounded like a hater. I'm a steam deck owner myself. Bought the 512gb and now I'm rocking 3tb. Purple shell. Upgraded everything. Deckhd screen on the way. Waiting for fsr3. But even I'm excited about this device. We all knew the ally was shit. Look at the quality of their laptops. But Lenovo deserves respect. At least give the thing a fair try. @@enricod.7198I think it will support VRR/Adaptive sync, since AMD F-sync doesn't require extra hardware in the monitor and is based on DP 1.2, This device itself is basically all AMD technology.
      So there's a high chance it's a VRR screen/panel. But if Lenovo disabled it, probably because VRR would eat more power than locked hz.
      For me it isn't a big deal, i have RoG Ally and play 60fps all the time when battery mode, extra hz for handheld is just a nice to have feature. I also have a portable 16" gaming monitor so really not a big deal.

    i love the fact that this beast of a mobile processor is the fastest out there, maybe not on 48Watts but still, this screen is integer native to 800P. therefore looks great, vs. any 1080-1200P native screen, therefore a lot of tweaks from the deck apply. parred with high end CPU is kinda a no brainer to me ;)

  • @smidlee7747
    @smidlee7747 Рік тому +9

    It still better to go from 1600p to 800p since this is 1/4 of the number of pixels , thus combine 4 pixels in 1600p to one pixel to 800p . This is better than going from 1080p to 720p. It's the same 4k to 1080p or 1440p to 720p matches evenly.
    VRR is not as needed on a portrait screen since our eyes detect screen tearing across the screen more than vertically. I turn off v-sync on the Deck. Vrr is just a more improved v-sync without the lag or double frames.

    I feel like this is unfairly negative overall. The reason for the high res screen is because higher quality displays are only available at higher resolutions in general per Lenovo which makes sense. Notice the color accuracy is much better than the Deck and it can get 25% brighter... plus the fact that it's 1600p means it will scale perfectly when running at 800p.

    VRR is les of an issue with a 144hz display. I have a 3x32" monitors all with Freesync 2 support and I honestly have to say I forget when I turn it off for benchmarking, to turn it back on after as since I got a 144hz monitor back in 2013 and the Acer Predator I got after, neither of which had any support for most if not all the time I used it (the predator eventualy did when nvidia gave in and added support), I never really noticed tearing. I obviously got some, but as I was not analysing every frame, I have not noticed. !44hz on the other hand as a main feature as well as a larger screen, for me at least, is a big deal as it reduces eye strain, and I will take that over not seeing the odd tear on devices that will pretty much be playing games with locked frame rates for the most part. Holy pogo pins! Wait a tick hear me out... My hope is for rapid growth of 3rd party / modding community options. For example maybe we'll see lighter replacement controllers that have dual touch pads with no internal batteries, it powers on the pogos. The detachment can be purely magnetic or locks on a sliding rail. Maybe somebody creates a clam shell mount with the controller and keyboard built in turning it into a GPD Win Micro! This keyboard base could have a built-in 4 in 1 doc to add more USB ports, HDMI, Ethernet and SSD support. Maybe we get swappable battery packs. The options are endless as long as we focus on that 1.41lb base that has the big ass QHD 8.8" screen as the star of the show! Otherwise even if you are not a fan of those stock joycons we can always fallback on xbox or Dualshock gamepads. Oh how about an arcade bar top mount and go all out retro with AMD's integer scaling? There's huge potential here, especially if they sell a base Z1 for $549 (256GB) - $599 soon after!

    Regarding no VRR: Any division of the refresh rate should (in theory) feel very smooth. So if it’s 144hz, 72fps and 48fps should feel awesome. Personally on handheld devices I cap the FPS below 60 for battery life, so in this case, I would be aiming for a stable 48fps in my games. On retro titles where the animations are inherently low FPS, you could even cap it at 36fps and retain parody with the refresh rate.

    • @TheTaxxor

      I'd love to go for 40FPS but it seems like you can only choose 60 or 144Hz.
      A 120Hz option would've been the best because you can use it with 30, 40 and 60FPS. And especially with a handheld, theres a big difference in power draw and/or turned down settings needed between hitting 40 and 48FPS and the only other alternative would be 36FPS

Yes, can't play elden ring at 144, but hades you can. Given the state of the current handheld market and what is available, the reality (assuming you want a BIG screen portable device vs pocketable etc) is this: 1) it lacks VRR (vs ally) and 32gb ram (vs many). Otherwise, if you want a big screen device, this meets or beats all other options (including, except for ally, PRICE and LOCAL returns/exchanges (for many) etc, which are HUGE selling points). Put up your video and thoughts but don't call it myths busted when you busted no myths.

    I don't think black bar is a problem, 16:10 is the feature to maximize screen, bezelless. If the game not support it but it is still playable right, not a legion go fault. Older game or using emulator build 4:3 so not a big deal it just the game.

    • @baldsealion
      @baldsealion  Рік тому

      It’s not really a “problem” but just a downside. You lose a little bit of screen, but there is a lot to give. It just looks a little weird as it shifts the content downward, so your bezel on top looks thicker than the bottom. It’s a small gripe, but an unfortunate side effect of 16:10

    • @FaridRudiansyah
      @FaridRudiansyah Рік тому +1

      But when a game supports 16:10, it gives you an extra view, so it's a feature rather than a downside, why some people seeing 16:10 as a "Downside" I don't know how they look like that.
      RoG ally is 16:9 but still has a large black bar top and bottom that you can't fix it, yup that's a "not bezel-less screen".
      So when you are on 16:10 but the game only supports 16:9, it looks like RoG ally virtually. Big bezels. The same thing except RoG ally has permanent black bar you can't fix it via software or patch.

    • @FaridRudiansyah
      @FaridRudiansyah Рік тому

      Black Bar on the 16:10 can be fixed via GPU driver / control panel or via display itself (on external monitor/TV mostly) , just turn on "maximize" or "fit the screen" (scaling) option I think. It's stretched out or cropped to fit 16:10, a dirty fix.

I have a 16:10 portable screen, 16:9 bezel-less monitor, Legion laptop (16:10) and RoG ally, so big bezels on the RoG ally really annoyed me why not go 16:10 or use bigger screen that bezel-less, probably just wider a bit (probably as wide as steamdeck) or same screen size but narrow a bit, of course less grip.

      1. Beautiful screen with QHD
      2. A Trackpad!
      3. Tablet option possibly(I would like if I could replace my surface go with this- need to find a good size BT keyboard with a trackpad that maybe could be put in a cover)
      4. Possibly goes down to lower tdp than the Ally(although it is the same Z1E chip so we will see what kind of real world performance difference there is)
      5. Can’t really complain about faster RAM than the Ally
      6. The bigger battery is a plus but is likely a compensation for the larger screen+charging controllers so we may not see better battery life than the Ally.
      7. More back buttons than the Ally- although the placement seems odd.
      I think that’s about it.

    • @FaridRudiansyah
      @FaridRudiansyah Рік тому

      Lenovo doesn't have a product/technology like RoG XG Mobile right now, basically its a Mobile GPU that is built outside of a laptop gaming, so you can plug externally to any other RoG compatible devices and more portable than a standard eGPU.
      Lenovo GO use USB4 (like TB3 protocol), so could use any eGPU and you can build yourself way cheaper than XG Mobile but bigger, heavier and took more space too.
      But oculink is also an "open protocol" that is 50% faster than ThunderBolt 3/4, the first handheld device that uses this is from GPD.
      In short eGPU is a way to upgrade gaming performance especially when docked but needs a special port.

      Ally having VRR and XGM capability are killer features. XGM is just a clean setup and is small in size when you think about it. As far as the screen resolution, it is not a negative and will never be a negative to have a better resolution on the screen. You'd be surprised at the amount of games that are able to achieve 120 fps. Also game streaming is a thing and it also takes advantage of the higher refresh rate screen and resolution. I think Lenovo has yet to let the people that actually review these consoles touch them yet. So there is still a lot of information that is missing!
