Sorry to hear that. I lost mine in 2013. I`m in the woods in a camper now since last August. Not sure how I survived. I bought prepping gear with the stimulus and a 2004 camper with an insurance payout. I grow what I can and order tuna, sardines, crackers, Macaroni & Cheese, etc and they bring me some food from the food bank if they remember.
A small portion of the dry blackeyed peas in a package from the store will not only grow an abundance of beans to shell and snap but the leaves are 40% protein. My yard is full of them and other cow pea types like Mississippi Purple Hulls and Red Rippers, plus okra, mustard greens, squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, collards, melons, sweet corn, herbs, and emergency bunny wabbits (I`m nice to the bunnies so they stay around in case I need meat), squirrels, raccoons, etc.
Blackeyed peas are one of the healthiest bean types containing little lectin and they love Summer heat. They also make their own fertilizer. I`ve grown blackeyed peas from store beans or whatever was in the food pantry box when I was broke for my entire life as a survival tactic. I always keep fishing gear and a Daisy 880 or other budget small game air r*fle and PLENTY of pellets. Only use the smooth bore types for BBs. I`m getting a powerful break barrel next month..a Barra (Bear River) TPR 1200 for larger game at night. I`m in backwoods very rural Louisiana here...an old survivor from the 60s. Never had anything but my wits and survival skills.

Also helps you feel like you’ve achieved something in the kitchen. And remember folks, most Rich Man’s Foods these days comes from Poor Man’s Food of yesteryear. Because when you don’t have much, you learn how to cook and make the most of Not Much. Anyone can cook a good quality steak well. But not everyone can properly cook a lovely bit of Ox Tail.

In Italy, we had a cast iron pot that sat near the fire in winter. Wherever we had went into it, along with pasta beans & water. Sometimes it was just pasta e fagoli. We always had garlic, onions, & few wheels of Parmesan cheese, because everyone grows the veggies, and has at least a goat or lamb, or a family member does... Those soups kept families alive during very hard times.

Even pooling our money for food we ate a lot of beans, rice, chicken legs. All very easy to cook. Go to a Salvation Army or a second hand book store and see what cookbooks they have. Camping, cooking for one or two are good ones to start with.

Hi, you really hit my passionate-about-this button on this one (yes, I'm the mom friend) - feel free to ignore this giganto post if it's overkill!
As someone who has been there here's the one piece of advice that I learnt the hard way - the most expensive thing in your diet is variety. Seriously. If your budget is super tight don't let anybody shame you for eating the same breakfast every day, the same lunch every day and repetitive dinners, as much as you can stand to. If you have access to kitchen facilities, cook a stew or curry big enough for 6 and freeze 5 portions - do that a couple of times a week and before too long you have a variety of leftover portions to choose from, not just the one you cooked two days ago! If you don't have access to kitchen facilities and would like some better suggestions, feel free to poke me in the comments and I'm sure I can come up with something :)
If you're just learning how to cook, soups, stews and curries are a good place to start - all that slow heat with high moisture means you rarely burn things as long as you stir every few minutes, and if you're worried about food poisoning, start with veggie options like a bean chili first, as that's much harder to undercook. A bonus of this is that almost every cuisine around the world has some version of the classic "peasant food" (a ton of veggies and cheap protein cooked slowly in one pot) so if you can afford a few spices, you have nearly infinite variety in flavour!
Best of luck in your learning-to-cook journey!
PS As an example of a cheap student diet, for four years, my diet looked like this:
Breakfast was oatmeal made with half milk, half water, a handful of dried or frozen fruit for sweetness and a tbsp peanut butter for protein balance and fats (and the obligatory cup of tea)
Lunch was an egg mayo or cheese & chutney sandwich and an apple, or often leftovers from the previous night.
Dinner was nearly always some sort of pea/bean/lentil stew or curry with rice or potatoes, frozen veggies, a tin of tomato and spices. I'd splash out and buy some sort of meat about 1-2 times a month. On Sundays I'd take my leftover apples, a bit of flour, sugar and butter and make crumble (crisp) for dessert.
This was 12 years ago, when my weekly grocery budget was about £10. Nowadays everything I would need for week 1 of this (including stuff like rice and oats which I wouldn't need to buy every week) would cost me about £30 at full price. Inflation is crazy!

I've been at that point of being so broke with no food and the most important point that this man makes here is that "A small serving is much more filling than no serving"! If you've ever had to end the day going to bed without eating anything, then like me, you will quickly realize what a terrible experience that is. This is why I love TheWolfePit's videos. He has a bunch of great recipies that are delicious! There's a large variety of creative recipes too that help keep from getting burned out on same dishes night after night. I've actually made many of these recipes and have found several that were so good, I continue to make them regularly every month! Check those recipes out everyone! I think you're going to really benefit from knowing them. I always have cheap shelf stable foods and ingredients in my cupboards now so that just in case I find myself in a bad situation, I will always have something to put in my belly! I will never again be caught in a situation where I have no food in the middle of one of Colorad's infamous monster blizzards. That was a hard life lesson! Take care everyone and may none of you ever have to go to bed without having something to eat.

A small portion of the dry blackeyed peas in a package from the store will not only grow an abundance of beans to shell and snap but the leaves are 40% protein. Blackeyed peas are one of the healthiest bean types containing little lectin and they love Summer heat.

one of my go to recipes is a bit similar to this but done in my Slow Cooker- i use either a 700g (1.5lb) jar of passata or 2X 450-500g (1lb) jars of premade pasta sauce with 1 jar of water (to rinse out the jars and get as much of the sauce and seasonings as i can) and to make it more liquid for the dry pasta i add in near the end. I use 3-4 cups of mixed frozen vegetables, 0.5 cup diced onion. Protein varies depending on what i have at hand- diced chipolatas, mince, be it beef, pork, chicken, turkey. sometimes its bacon or ham or i add a can of tuna or mackerel at the end. i cook the sauce, veggies and meat for 6-7 hours on low then stir in the bag of dry pasta usually spiral and let it sit and steep for 45-60 minutes before eating. i get up to 6-7 big servings and several go into the freezer. if i am a bit short on meat then i go to the canned beans- 4 bean mix or baked beans are my preferred choices.

It really pays to be a creative cook. I used to stick to recipes to the T, but eventually I got extremely tired of the same meals over and over again, and I dreaded going to the store to pick up choice ingredients when I knew in my mind that there should be a better way. Now, I'm eating filling and nutritious meals from leftover vegetables, broths, beans, etc every night! Again, it pays to be creative. Doing so will save you money, and put you in a far better position to survive on less. Don't let anyone talk you out of making creative choice meals. It's not for those Scooters anyway, and they'll not be the ones gaining from the experience.

Absolutely, but this is geared towards people trying to get enough calories to live. Pasta goes a long way, and despite what the current diet fad says, carbs are not the devil. I am definately in the camp where its not 8 servings, but thats because I'm a big eater; for my spouse it actually would probably last as long as you say. Even with my larger appetite, something like this would still last 2-3 meals, more if I pull out the ground beef

Quick, easy, cheap, versatile and Italian. Dried or canned canelli or garbanzo beans (quick if you presoak the night before and/use a pressure cooker) couple of links of Italian sausage or some pepperoni diced, chopped garlic or garlic powder, a can of tomatoes or some sundried tomatoes diced or some from your garden and the chicken bullion ...spinach or Swiss chard from your garden would be a nice addition. Oregano, basil or both and some form of small macaroni Cook the beans...brown the sausage that is removed from the casing, add the sausage to the beans along with the tomatoes, bullion and garlic. Simmer for 15' minutes or so while the pasta cooks. Toss the greens if you have some, in with the bean broth for just 5 minutes or so, then add the cooked pasta. Parmesan cheese is nice sprinkled on top. Very thrifty if you have a small garden, if you can afford it some olive oil to brown the sausage in and add to the pot is nice too.

Larry, this was a great video. Growing up in the 50's-60's we ate like this all the time . I see you reside in Remington ,Virginia and I know the values of eating on the "cheap" I grew up in Manassas ,Va and as the Feds moved in with their higher incomes food got more expensive because they could afford it thanks to you, me and all the other taxpayers in the country. I can remember metal/relic hunting in what was the beautiful woods of Brandy Station, Locust Grove, Stafford and Remington. It's so sad that those days are gone. These are the foods that I love and they are not forgotten. My Wife kids the hell out of me when i make a "bucket" of hot dogs and beans. A meal fit for a King!!!!!Stay safe and have a great night.

Rinse them and put them in a pot with 14 cups of water, 1/2 an onion, 5 cloves of garlic , 1 Tbsp. oil, and 1 tsp. of salt. Cook for 2 hours or until done to your liking. Check for salt, serve with bread. Makes enough to feed a crowd! And no you don't have to pre soak the beans.
