I have literally never heard a person say that in my life. Who cares if they do? There's story stuff in the game, and it's completely skippable if you want so whether you want story or you don't, you're covered.
• Scrithen • The only reason I expected Doom Eternal to have a good story was because *Doom 2016 had a really good story.* Not just the lore, but the interplay between Samuel and Olivia, Samuel and the Slayer ("Carefully release the hinges!"), the Hell testaments of the Slayer's previous conquests, even Vega had some time to shine in the penultimate level. Doom 2016 absolutely had a story. It was just really good at decieving you it didn't by having the Slayer not trust anyone and disobey their orders. Everyone remembers getting locked in Samuel's office while he talks to you, right? Eternal has a lot of plot disappointments. It's not even that it needed to add more, it just needed to do anything else with what it had. The 3 Hell Priests are all the same sniveling villain archetype, the Betrayer and King Novik appear in literally one scene each in the present and then never again (very sparingly in the codexes), and not only is the ending of 2016 not given any closure, but Samuel Hayden is mystery-retconned in ways that make him ironically less cool. You have to try REALLY hard to make *Doctor Samuel Hayden* less cool. The Khan Maykr is interesting enough though. The Maykrs' lore is pretty interesting in general. Addendum: I said a bit more than I anticipated, lol.
"Doom fans will burn your house down." They say video games make you violent. I'd say not having their video games makes some people a lot more fucking violent.
hearing you speak on micks impact and the immediate reaction to eternal after what just came out is heartbreaking. mick is crucial and the way he was treated is disgusting.
I also made this discovery in the track "Hell On Earth" and all subsequent riffs, it's in 5/4 (like the points of a pentagram) but also, if you take the notes (D, D#, C#, E, C) and put them on the circle of fifths, you also get a pentagram. When asked, he confirmed it to me on twitter.
I like the intelligence in the track. Karens would reverse metal songs in the 80s to try and find hidden satanic messages, but now you need to correlate the riffs
@@kieran.grant_ But you also have to turn it to mono audio. Theres also a few songs where he hid images in the sound, I know, it sounds weird, but I'll explain it (unless you already know). If you put sounds through Audacity, then change the form of the audio to Spectrogram, all you'll see is just a sloppy orangey red-ish purple-ish blue-ish green-ish wall. But, some songs in the Doom Eternal and just Doom soundtracks have secret messages that show up when you put the songs through the Spectrogram. I remember one, I think from Doom 2016 that had pentagons in it. Fucking crazy
You’re really going to talk about _Doom Eternal’s_ musical references to previous games without mentioning the title theme being the Icon of Sin’s theme from _Doom 2??_
Another thing he did is they'd show him gameplay footage of a level and he'd measure his heart rate and base the bpm of the song off how the gameplay of that area personally affected him.
you know the music for a game is perfectly matched when listening to the music makes you want to play the game, and when playing the game makes you want to listen to the music. Not many games have music like that.
@Blank Slot How was Bethesda to blame? Mick was given extensions upon extensions and didn't deliver. The guys did their best with pressed time and did what they could with work that wasn't theirs. How are both at fault if Mick was the prime reason for the delay and departure?
The true testament to Mick's work is every time you played a clip of the songs I'm wondering "Why aren't I ripping and tearing right now? Why am I watching this?" It was genuinely difficult to keep watching this video after a while to no fault of any part of the video itself. Music too good.
Man in bfg division i really enjoy that breaf moment before the main riff, with those three beeps, its like a switch being flipped with "carnage mode" written on it
Alright, high bpm drums and nine-string representing you destroying a mean demon horde standing between you, a terrifying addition to your arsenal, and once again not giving any shits about Sam's opinion.
@@lunastar2235 Metal is technically a form of Rock music, though it has branched away enough that it's considered its own style and has many sub-genre styles throughout, much like Rock does. A lot of people think "Classic" Rock is a genre, but really it can cover a vast scope of different kinds of Rock from over many decades, and many styles overlap like Album Rock and Psychedelic Rock that started in the late 60s. Bands like "Pink Floyd", "Led Zeppelin", and "Grateful Dead" all play Rock music, though their styles often vary from album to album (which is not unusual for bands with long careers). Technically, Rock gets blurry, as Country is sort of a hybrid of Folk and Rock, and Pop is an offshoot of Rock that has morphed into its own thing, and is basically mostly vocal-heavy, electronic Dicso/House these days (and is essentially a commercially industrial product of Big Media). If you want to hear a band that epitomizes Rock, but defies convention, check out "Sonic Youth" Basically Metal is heavier and harder than Rock, that's why it's called Heavy Metal. Metal is often brutal or even Satanic, but it doesn't have to be, sometimes it's just about fantasy, like Lord of the Rings. Rock can be hard, that's why there's Hard Rock, but there is also Soft Rock. There is Southern Rock, and there is Southern Metal, but the closest thing to "soft" Metal would possibly be Power Metal, which is kind of like the 'Pop' of Metal, lots of ballads and stuff. There is also Ambient Metal/Stoner Metal which are also referred to as Doom (no relation to the game, technically in conveys the mood of the sound), and they all tend to drone and chug, but sometimes will build up to a crescendo, much like Post-Metal. There is also Post-Rock which does a similar thing, basically it rolls before it rocks, with classical song structures and often orchestral instruments. I couldn't recommend a band that epitomizes Metal, but I suppose most Metalheads would point to "Iron Maiden", early "Metallica", or even "Slayer", and probably "Judas Priest" as like the 'first' Metal band I guess, but people argue about that sometimes like it matters a whole lot. Random assortment of example bands just from my immediate memory, can post links if you want: Post-Rock- "Godspeed You Black Emperor!", "Explosions in the Sky", "Do Make Say Think", "Mogwai", "Sigur Ros" Power Metal- "Manowar" (classic power metal), "Dragonforce" (faster, poppy power metal), "3 Inches of Blood" (more savage power metal) Progressive Death Metal- "Opeth" (lots of analogue/classical instrumentation, long-form songs), "Fallujah" (lots of ambience, synths, and female vocalization) Tech Death (Technical Death Metal)- "Vale of Pnath", "Irreversible Mechanism", "The Zenith Passage" (all of these bands hit hard, fast, brutally, and with excellent technical proficiency) Despite what Liam seems to believe and is conveying in this video, there are quite a few Metal and/or Industrial bands out there that have achieved a very similar sound to that found in the latest Doom games, years ago. I can't name any of them off hand, but if you want to hear a band that does it more electronically, check out "Noisia" (also, they did the soundtrack for a recent Devil May Cry game too)
"Is mayonnaise an instrument" Mick Gordon: "It is if you record the sound of cutting open the mayonnaise jar with a sawzall and turn it into a synth effect"
That part at 45:45 might be my favorite part of the entire soundtrack. It’s so good and I can’t begin to explain the sheer amount of dopamine that my brain produces listening to it
playing music while gaming is better because: it suppresses the thinking part of your brain (somehow) and so your subconscious can make instinctive decisions without overthinking. i cant ride my (pedal)bike safely without music
@@jankbunky4279to me it was more like the music didn't intrude but had the desired thought-numbing effect. when hard the game soundtrack on UA-cam I didn't recognize any of it, except the story map one and the menu theme. it was just that good, it seamlessly integrated into the game. like... i couldn't tell you the songs i listened to after getting off my bike, but they still kept me safe, if that makes sense
@@CMDRunematti what you're saying makes sense I think, but I think it does go to show how different people experience music differently. I at least felt like I recognized most of the DOOM songs even when listening to them on UA-cam, I just couldn't hum along or anything like that, if that's even humanly possible.
@@jankbunky4279 i see... well, you couldn't much hum 60+ bpm i think, and there isn't enough lyrics to sing along with 😁 i do sing along on the bike tho, just don't ask what was on after the ride. another thought occurred to me: how about this, your brain takes in visuals and audio input. if the audio processing part recognizes "yo, it's just music" your brain don't have to care about it anymore, and can put the effort saved into the visual processing, and motor functions, which would improve your skill... like gaming mode on a pc, stopping background shit to lag your game... if anyone reading this has an MRI machine, please experience on people playing doom with and without the music 🤔
As sad as I am about Mich Gordon's departure, I am glad that they managed to replace him with the 2nd best choice, Andrew Hulshult. He did the music for the Rise of the Triad remake, Dusk, Quake Champions and is even made a Doom 1 remake album, along with a wip Doom 2 album as well. He's a damn good musician and I hope he puts out something that he can be proud of.
@@georgeforemanfamilygrill7574 he's done a great job, it sounds like Doom but not like Mick's work. He's made his own excellent contribution to the franchise
His work is okay but it doesnt have an edge...the out of the box workflow Mick uses makes it special. Meanwhile DLC osts sounded generic 80s thrash metal while trying to copy Mick.
27:48 The fact that Mick had the balls to include the Gachi scream in the soundtrack just shows how good of a composer he is. Unlimited by convention, he excels in his element. The scream symbolizing the sheer terror and pain the doom slayer is experiencing.
Most likely its due to the music continuously stimulating the brain that by the time a split decision is needed, the brain is ready and active due to the riffs instead of resting
Yep thinking the same. But i think the "dopamine" theory has some truth to it too. I found myself pushing harder just to be able to hear harder stems while playing, which are extremely satisfying and rewarding to hear. Both probably add up.
Trent Reznor in the 90's definitely was. Probably the reason I loved Doom 2016's soundtrack so much is that it's the ONLY stuff I've heard that sounds like a progression or extension of the kind of stuff Trent was doing back in the Broken/Downward Spiral days.
BFG Division is one of the best metal compositions to have graced a soundtrack. The pure adrenaline that it gives to go with the action is one of the most unique gameplay experiences in any game so far and it absolutely takes control of the player & makes them make different decisions than they normally would due to sheer confidence
So I did a little rough research on the Mick Gordon / DOOM: Eternal OST situation and found something interesting: Bethesda / Id Software pressured Mick to do the OST outside of his original contract for working on DOOM: Eternal's music - www.reddit.com/r/PS4/comments/gdhr8u/id_software_has_posted_an_open_letter_on_rdoom/ "At E3 last year [June 2019], we announced that the OST would be included with the DOOM Eternal Collector’s Edition (CE) version of the game. At that point in time >>> we didn’t have Mick under contract for the OST
I would have waited however long it takes for the soundtrack to be fully mastered. I want it done as best as it could be. ID/Bethesda made a mistake in promising the OST with the release, and that is what caused the entire mess. Andrew Hulshult and the other guy (it's kind of depressing how nobody mentions him, and I can't even remember his name) are fantastic, though. The other guy said in a video's comments that the DLC trailer music was all him. I thought it was great, so it should be all good.
Great video. Being a metalhead who heard this soundtrack when it came out, I was impressed at the type of metal mick chose to go with. The types of riffs Mick wrote for this soundtrack are heavily associated with bands like Meshuggah and Periphery, progressive metal. You'd think that something like Death or Black metal would be what would go into this soundtrack. So even when it came to finally incorporating guitars Mick was actually very original in his decisions.
How is Doom Eternal still not on Spotify, can you imagine how many streams they've missed out on by not releasing it during the hype period of the game? Makes no sense.
@@tarkuscameback1621 it's not bethesda its ID. Mick has stated on insta he wants to go back and redo the entire soundtrack but ID wont let him cause they technically own it
If I wasn't already a longtime DOOM fan, hearing these tracks would have had me on it within minutes. One of the all time great OSTs. Great vid you a ill ninja
I can get behind that "Your brain is trying to live up to the music" part. Whenever They Only Thing They Fear Is You came on I distinctly remember doing my very best not to die because theres no way I could let myself die while that is playing. I play the new DOOM games primarily for the music and the way it syncs with the gameplay so well.
Near the end of the first level of DOOM Eternal there’s a moment where you have to jump down from the building into the arena. I remember staying there at the window with low health and ammo and carefully sniping out imps one by one, but then the aggressive music came in and I had to jump. There’s no way I would snipe while that piece was on. I *had* to fight them face to face.

@@DropkickNation eh i think its pretty funky and alright
• Scrithen •
The only reason I expected Doom Eternal to have a good story was because *Doom 2016 had a really good story.*
Not just the lore, but the interplay between Samuel and Olivia, Samuel and the Slayer ("Carefully release the hinges!"), the Hell testaments of the Slayer's previous conquests, even Vega had some time to shine in the penultimate level.

If you want to hear a band that epitomizes Rock, but defies convention, check out "Sonic Youth"
Basically Metal is heavier and harder than Rock, that's why it's called Heavy Metal.
Random assortment of example bands just from my immediate memory, can post links if you want:
Post-Rock- "Godspeed You Black Emperor!", "Explosions in the Sky", "Do Make Say Think", "Mogwai", "Sigur Ros"
Power Metal- "Manowar" (classic power metal), "Dragonforce" (faster, poppy power metal), "3 Inches of Blood" (more savage power metal)
Progressive Death Metal- "Opeth" (lots of analogue/classical instrumentation, long-form songs), "Fallujah" (lots of ambience, synths, and female vocalization)
Tech Death (Technical Death Metal)- "Vale of Pnath", "Irreversible Mechanism", "The Zenith Passage" (all of these bands hit hard, fast, brutally, and with excellent technical proficiency)
Despite what Liam seems to believe and is conveying in this video, there are quite a few Metal and/or Industrial bands out there that have achieved a very similar sound to that found in the latest Doom games, years ago. I can't name any of them off hand, but if you want to hear a band that does it more electronically, check out "Noisia" (also, they did the soundtrack for a recent Devil May Cry game too)

Being a metalhead who heard this soundtrack when it came out, I was impressed at the type of metal mick chose to go with.
The types of riffs Mick wrote for this soundtrack are heavily associated with bands like Meshuggah and Periphery, progressive metal.
