After the success of Maidan, Nuland stated at a press conference that the US spent $5Bn on 'promotion of democracy in Ukraine'. There is a video clip on the YT.
There is nothing Democratic about Ukraine. The country has been in a civil war since 2014. And the reasons for that conflict show that many within the Ukrainian border do not wish to be ruled by Kyiv. And those people reside in the Donbas region where so much of the fighting has occurred. We had the Cuban Missile crisis. The U.S. didn't want Russia military bases, nuclear weapons in Cuba at our door step, and considered invading Cuba to fight Russia and nuclear war. So, why would Russia accept NATO, which is mostly made up of U.S. soldiers, at their border which is a threat to their country ? What if Russia began putting bases and nuclear weapons in Cuba and Mexico. Would we take action as before? Russia hasn't been building military bases and placing nuclear at the border of E.U., NATO countries, and the U.S. borders. This is the U.S. and NATO surrounding Russia Was Russia threatening E.U. or the U.S.?
It's a little bit different story. Cuba had Russian missiles pointed at US, I.e. offensive posture. Russia's neighbors are joining Nato in order to defend against Russian attack. None of Russia's neighbors are considering attacking Russia.
Because it's barely an issue in the modern age. We have submarines and intercontinental ballistic missiles. Being a few thousand kilometers closer to Russian border offers very little in return
Do you know how the Cuban missile crisis began? The United States has deployed missiles in Turkey. Turkey had not only water borders, but also land borders with the USSR. And in response, the USSR deployed missiles in Cuba. And the United States didn't like it right away.
You forget how the Cuba crisis was solved. Soviet Union wold not place any nuclear weapons on Cuba, in return for Cuba never being invaded by USA and the missiles in Turkey being withdrawn.

The question is in what service is that focus. What is the prescriptive policy of the libertarian non interventionist position? Saying that Russia was provoked fails to address the actual actions of the Russian state. It assumes without evidence that Russia isn't an expansionist empire that would eventually integrate into a global system that Russia itself wasn't leading. In late November, a U.S. official insisted that Ukraine should consider lowering its conscription age from 25 to 18. Today, Ukrainians are balking at the idea. A 20-year-old Ukrainian serviceman named Vladislav said that lowering the military conscription age is a “bad idea.” He volunteered to join the army and believes that the option should be open for 18-year-olds to serve, but that it should not be compulsory. "If there are no people, who the hell needs this land?” The Biden administration is urging Zelensky to lower the draft age from 25 to 18 to boost the military amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, but such a move could have detrimental effects on Ukraine's struggling demographics. As of August, Ukraine's death rate was triple that of the birth rate, as the war with Russia has taken its toll. The first half of this year saw a 9 percent decrease in the numbers of children born in comparison to 2023, and the death to birth ratio has continued to increase since 2020. The population has fallen by 10 million due to deaths, refugees leaving to seek asylum, and fertility issues since the SMO began in 2022, according to Reuters. If bill 12076 is passed and women are allowed to be registered for conscription: Many women face significant barriers to starting families due to instability, increased caregiving responsibilities, and disrupted access to healthcare caused by the SMO. As the SMO continues, these challenges could deepen, leading to a further reduction in birth rates and adding strain to an already declining population. Female-headed households, which are projected to grow due to displacement and men going to war, already face disproportionate and unique economic and social pressures. Compared to other countries in the region, Ukraine's birth rate at just under one child per woman, is the lowest in the region, and in Europe." The demographic challenges are more acute in Ukraine due to the disruptions caused by the ongoing SMO, such as large-scale displacement and economic instability. The war has also led to millions of refugees, many of them young, leaving the country. These factors place Ukraine in a more precarious demographic position compared to neighboring countries. The long-term ramifications of decreasing birth rates and overall population decline in Ukraine extend beyond the immediate loss of human capital to include economic instability, labor shortages and weakened social systems. With an aging population and high out-migration, the country faces a compounding decline in its workforce, which threatens the viability of its recovery efforts. Without substantial interventions, these demographic trends could undermine Ukraine's ability to sustain its development and maintain social cohesion. And large numbers of people were leaving and not coming back, even before Russia’s total war, over unequal opportunities. It could be a Herculean task to convince skilled refugees to repatriate if they have reached a comfortable living standard in the EU. Member states are also using these Ukrainians to plug their own workforce deficits. Their benefit is Ukraine’s loss. The knock-on effects of a demographic crisis will be tremendous, stunting any recovery. The Center for Economic Strategy (CES) forecasts an annual GDP decline between 2.7%- 6.9% if the country loses between 1.3-3.3 million of its citizens. Ukraine also faces a prodigious imbalance between old and young. The age pyramid is very top-heavy, about 30% of the population is pensioners, according to the Ukrainian analytics website Opendatabot. Over half of Ukrainian children under 10 years old are now living abroad, according to researcher Dariia Mykhailyshyna from the CES. With a fertility rate of 1.16, it may be difficult for Ukrainians to multiply their way out of this problem. The ongoing conflict remains a significant barrier, the need for peace to secure a sustainable demographic future, peace is essential for sustainable recovery.
That’s quite the bundle of lies and misinformation you’ve packed in there. Let’s set the record straight. In Ukraine, there are two sides: on one, you have Russia led by a dictator who’s sending thousands of his own people to their deaths daily, showing complete disregard for human life-an irony, considering he launched this war claiming to "stop a genocide" that never happened. On the other side, you have Zelensky, who has deliberately avoided sending Ukraine’s youngest citizens to fight. Despite the urgency, he’s trying to spare the next generation to ensure Ukraine has a future when this nightmare ends. If Ukraine is ever forced to send its youngest men to war, let me be clear-it’s not America’s fault. American tanks aren’t rolling across Ukrainian soil with the intent to kill the young people you seem to worry about, and it’s not American bombs destroying hospitals, schools, shopping centers, and lives. It’s Russia. The same Russia that would wreak the same havoc on America if given the chance. Because let’s be honest: Russia’s ultimate target isn’t Kyiv-it’s Washington. Those who refuse to acknowledge this simple truth, and instead let themselves be misled by voices like this radio host, are either bad actors or useful idiots. I wish you a good life, my friend. America is quick to call the Israeli occupation of Palestine complicated but the Ukraine war a travesty. Its called double standards my friend.
This is just my two cents on what changed over the years to cause the US to be far less cautious regarding Ukraine, but I think it really is as simple as arrogance. We emerged victorious from the Cold War and were the world's sole super-power. When you're the only giant in the room, all the threats look insignificant and you generally don't have to be all that clever to address them. I've heard former diplomats say that the ambassadors and foreign policy advisors of today are of a much lower pedigree than during the Cold War. Specifically, they say that the field of Russian studies has abandoned strategic empathy as a central pillar for how we deal with Russia. Mearsheimer once said that he spoke to former US Ambassador to Russia Micheal McFaul, and McFaul seemed genuinely confused about why Putin didn't take his assurances that the US' designs for Ukraine posed no threat to Russia. I think there was a mix of these people believing their own nonsense and simply being arrogant enough to think they could do what they want and Russia would simply be too weak to meaningfully object.
@@robampykey8947 I never said or implied that actually, but I see what you're getting at. A lot of people get annoyed when we talk about issues like NATO expansion purely through the lens of US-Russian relations. However, there are two reasons I view the issue through this lens. First, I'm an American, so I'm firstly concerned about American foreign policy and how it impacts us and others, especially those we claim to be protecting or helping. Second, NATO is an American-led military alliance. It's not a social club. When a country joins NATO, this fundamentally increases America's strategic security advantages visa vi Russia, which in turn can cause security concerns for Russia. Vien Russia's strength and status as a nuclear-armed great power, that dimension absolutely cannot be ignored no matter how upsetting it may be. That doesn't mean neighboring countries' security concerns are invalid or should be ignored, and they frankly haven't been by a long shot. It means that these things need to be balanced. It means that the responsible thing to do when you decide to play a role in another country's security - as America did with Ukraine - you need to properly assess the risks. Putin and Russian diplomats were telling their American counterparts in very clear terms that they viewed our actions in Ukraine as a serious threat. They even warned that they would invade Ukraine if we stayed on this trajectory as far back as 2008. Transcripts and notes from National Security Council meetings all the way back in the '90s demonstrate a clear understanding from American officials that Ukraine is a "red line" for Russia, with those exact words being used. Pushing forward with the "NATO-ization" of Ukraine in the face of all this was utterly reckless, which brings us back to the key point about the need to balance all these concerns. Focusing on Ukraine's concerns to the complete exclusion of Russia's helped no one, and yet this is actually the most generous description I can give of this debacle. The truth is that Ukraine was deeply divided about the idea of "turning Westward." The Washington Post even reported around late 2013-2014. The "Maidan protests" were supported by 48 percent of Ukrainians with 46 percent against. NATO expansion in particular lacked strong support, with only roughly 20 to to 30-something percent in favor of joining. And this speaks again to the necessity of framing of these issues through the US-Russian lens if we're to properly understand them. This wasn't a case in which "the people" of Ukraine rose up and demanded NATO membership. This was the US seeking a strategic advantage visa vi Russia. I'm sure American officials convinced themselves that they knew better than Ukrainians about what was good for them. They were mistaken. Russia isn't justified in invading Ukraine, but this was a risk we knew existed. We gambled anyways, and here we are.
I was good friends with Russians and Ukrainians in college. At that time they were friends with each other and virtually didn’t distinguish. The sheer scale of human tragedy wrought by the stupid policies and miscalculations won’t be realized for years. Sh!tshow doesn’t do it justice, with even an inkling of the lives lost.

Robert Kagan is lying through his teeth, taking advantage of the ignorance of the American people. The Soviet Union never ‘occupied’ Ukraine. On the contrary, the founder of the Soviet Union, Lenin, created Ukraine in 1917, because such a country had never existed before. Kievan Rus was where Russian civilization began in the 9th century, and it had nothing to do with Ukraine, because there wasn’t such a country at that time. It was all part of the Russian Empire until 1917. Then, the Soviet Bolsheviks named this territory ‘Ukraine’ purely for geographical and political purposes. After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, that region, like many others, separated and became sovereign. So, Ukraine as a country, de jure, was born in 1991. Fellow Americans, stop watching mass media, read history books, educate yourselves. Your problem is your illiteracy and ignorance. @@rosesprog1722 true, but nothing is always objective. It is mostly objective, though. In describing the Ukraine history it is more accurate and thruthful than this comment. The claim that "Ukraine was created by Lenin in 1917" is inaccurate because Ukraine had a history long before the Soviet period. Additionally, reducing Ukraine's entire history to Soviet and Bolshevik actions overlooks centuries of cultural and political development. The claim "The Soviet Union never ‘occupied’ Ukraine." is misleading. Even if wasn’t "occupied" in the traditional military sense (like foreign invasions), it was part of the Soviet state structure under Soviet control and influence.

@ranar. My 2 earlier posts were deleted by empire censors. The nonsense that Putin wanted to recreate the Russian empire could be rubbished by the fact that for 8 years he didn't intervene when Ukraine bombarded Donbass.
This is one of the most used misconceptions (I think invthis case it is deliberate, because you can tell that Mr. Norton has a very good knowledge about this topic) but Clinton never said we will not move military equipment further esst. James Baker told Gorbatchev that considering German unification, no NATO soldiers will be stationed on the teritorry of the former GDR. Which is still this way today - I live here and all NATO soldiers are in former West Germany. Although Baker didn‘t have any authority to speak for NATO, nor is there anything written. But the Russians keep repeating it, because as Josepg Goebbels said „you just have to repeat a lie over and over again until it becomes the truth“. And legacy media parrots it, instead of asking one simple question - if this is the case and Clinton said this, it should be eady to either see the contract or get the transcript of the conversation … but neber ever do they show something like this, because no such thing exists. Mr. Norton mentioned other things too, that are incorrect. But when you follow up fact after fact … but every 10th fact is anything but a fact, but deliberate fiction - people will swallow it.
Exactly. James Baker had no authority to make promises on behalf of NATO, and Bill Clinton made no such statements either. Even if he had, no U.S. president has the authority to bind future presidents to any commitments. Anyone familiar with how democracy works understands this. Yet, pro-Russian propagandists like Jeffrey Sachs continue to recycle this claim, despite knowing better.
Because all that Azov ever did was fight and die like brave heroes for the patriotic cause of democracy and self-determination. The Russians murdered the last of them, who were wounded POWs, in a mass execution and then they buried them in a mass grave. A blatant war crime. The so-called "nazis" of Azov fought for a democratically elected Jewish President, there were Jewish Azov soldiers, and they fought to expel an imperialist invader, they fought against genocide. All of which is literally the opposite of what a nazi is. Horton doesn't seem to understand the definition of the word nazi.

@@finance8575 the burden of proof for the provocation case is to show that Russia would not have expanded aggressively without Western encroachment or at least countered the supporting evidence. The wars, incursions, purges and manipulation individually aren't evidence, but together they show a Russia trying to create regional dominance through coercion and warfare. At least with the Western order countries ask to join and everyone has to agree. The core issue remains. What is the prescriptive libertarian non-interventionist foreign policy? In late November, a U.S. official insisted that Ukraine should consider lowering its conscription age from 25 to 18. Today, Ukrainians are balking at the idea. A 20-year-old Ukrainian serviceman named Vladislav said that lowering the military conscription age is a “bad idea.” He volunteered to join the army and believes that the option should be open for 18-year-olds to serve, but that it should not be compulsory. "If there are no people, who the hell needs this land?”
The Biden administration is urging Zelensky to lower the draft age from 25 to 18 to boost the military amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, but such a move could have detrimental effects on Ukraine's struggling demographics.
And if you ever need a history lesson or recommendations for real history books on Ukraine-written by actual historians, not radio hosts-just let me know. Take care, sweetheart.

@@GeorgeRodrigues-xb6bo Meaning?
So the only valid POV's are Russian and US? What about the European and Scandinavian perspectives?

His show on Useful Idiots this week was also very excellent. Cool guest!
Obama had a profound take on Ukraine when he was asked why he hadn't sent weapons to the Ukrainian government. Paraphrasing, he asked what our interest was in who governed the ethnic Russians of eastern Ukraine.
Ethnic Russians and other minorities inhabit the Dombas and easter Ukraine, because that is where the Soviets developed industry, and Russian migrated there. Landowners ouside the main cities are actually ukrainian.
Your government wants to keep you ignorant so they can manipulate and enslave you.
@@sambojudooldschool I would recommend anyone to read about Ukraine history and judge for themselves. A good starting point is: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Ukraine
I couldn't agree more and thanks for the details. Unfortunately, being typically American and being knowledgeable about the rest of the world don't go together, it's intentional, very sad and extremely dangerous.
@@TheBatlash Be careful with Wikipedia, it's not always objective, especially when it comes to world politics.
That is such a wishy washy standard of state sovereignty. "If Putin doesnt think the rights of ethnic Russians are being threatened, then you don't gotta worry about Russia yanking land outside of Ukraine." That's an utterly insane metric to judge whether a state's borders should be infringed upon by force and has nothing to do with NATO expansion.

Understanding the difference between being provoked into violence, and justified for violence, is a massively crucial thing for everyone to understand.
Republicans are justifying Russia for the violence. Unbelievable, how low they fell. Both parties are screwed beyond repair.

That's nothing against Horton, but I've heard him make this claim about this plan to kick Russia out of the Sevastopol naval base on numerous occasions, but I've never been able to find a source supporting or even disputing it. Seems like a crucial piece of the puzzle to understand how and why everything went the way it did.
He's probably talking about this: on March 2, 2014, the former Presidents
Ukraine urged to break the treaty on the Black Sea Fleet of Russia
Why is NOBODY on BP talking about the nuclear tri-party treaty guaranteeing territorial integrity of UEA if they give away nukes? Why is nobody talking about the penalties of that treaty?
Does the treaty mean you can then do anything with no repercussions?
The 'treaty' (actually a memorandum) only mandates that the parties that UKR's case to the UN security council. The USA did that. R vetoed it. Ah well, move on...
Because then you need to talk about the promise of "eternal neutrality" by Ukraine - as was enshrined in the constitution of Ukraine and so called treaty of friendship with Russia - and that it was the basis for all agreements and was broken, obviously, by Ukraine with the US support. So - back to the Scott's argument.

Horton is right that Putin was not out to recreate the Russian empire. @ranar. My 2 earlier posts were deleted by empire censors. The nonsense that Putin wanted to recreate the Russian empire could be rubbished by the fact that for 8 years he didn't intervene when Ukraine bombarded Donbass.

Maybe get Arestovych on, ask him about the interviews he gave back in 2019 and how he feels now.
He slips in a lot if opinions stated as facts.

There's a lot of Ukrainian/Azov propaganda in the replies.
