    My dad is almost 93, and like James, he always "knew a guy" who could fix something or lend us tools. Recently, I had to tell him that all the guys he knew are dead and their sons are retired, and we have to hire someone to make repairs or rent the tools. Thanks for sharing your incredible journey.

      I'm one of those people who always knew a guy. Unfortunately, they are all gone now. My dad wasn't around and a legend of a human took me under his wing and taught me to ride motorcycles and drive a dump truck, and so much more . He just passed this last Christmas eve of dementia. I don't wish that on anyone. I'm so blessed to have had this man in my life. I still know a guy. He's my husband and he just built out a van for us to travel on the cheap. It's awesome! I hope your dad never suffers and never forgets who you are. Blessings.

    Absolutely amazing! I could feel the stress...and wanted to cry with you, Elsa. By the way, tears are a sign of strength, not weakness. Tears show how beautifully vulnerable we are in every situation...we just choose with whom we share that kind of strength. Thank you for being authentic in this vast world of people you don't know personally. The beams are gorgeous, and what a testament to all the hard work you've all done.

    I really love your friendship with James and Doreen. And the story about the wedding gifts has given me inspiration for a wedding ceremony I'm writing to officiate my niece's wedding in December. The gift isn't the "thing," it's the people who show up. The stuff helps you, but the people sustain you. My best "grown up" advice, as a 56 yr old, has always been to collect people, not things. You've done that and it's lovely to see.

    One of the top 5 stressors in life is _moving_ ! Can't imagine how high "building your own house without any real personal knowledge of how to complete such a task, hoping that it doesn't end up terrible, falling apart, someone getting hurt, the clock ticking toward Winter," etc, etc,... would rank. I'd be doing _exactly_ what you do, girl. *Hide and cry for a bit* (or sometimes driving for a bit and listening to tunes.) Then blow your nose ten times, look in the mirror, hope your nose isn't too red, and go back to stress-camp! We love ya, Elsa. You are one tough, beautiful, talented, _real_ woman. ❤

  • @leighannenight
    @leighannenight Рік тому +11

    As someone who has been a woman on construction sites with mostly men, Elsa, I want to commend your resilience and determination here. I can see all these little micro-aggressions happening (I'm not saying anyone here is a horrible person) and on top of the stress of what's going on that's really challenging to bear. Barron, you're doing a great job navigating all of this too. It's amazing to have experienced leaders to help you out, that is really special, but yeah, sometimes there are ego obstacles (from everyone involved) that can make it that much harder. I think you both are very graceful, gracious, lucky and deserving all at once.

    • @JohnSmith-ev1sm
      @JohnSmith-ev1sm Рік тому +3

      If you saw any ego or "micro aggressions" then I suggest there is something wrong with your perception. All I saw was a bunch of terrific people working hard and overcoming building/personal challenges.

    • @leighannenight
      @leighannenight Рік тому +1

      @@JohnSmith-ev1sm I'm not saying they aren't terrific people or that they have intended any ill will. When I say micro-aggression this is what I mean: "indirect, subtle, or unintentional discrimination against members of a marginalized group". It's easy to miss and it doesn't mean I think there are any bad people here. As a woman who has worked in construction and experienced similar things I know it's rough. I didn't mean this as a dig on anyone but rather to offer emotional support to Elsa or anyone else who might resonate.
      I think it's important for people to be able to reflect on how their actions or behaviors impact others, and I can imagine why you might feel protective of some of the people in this video and I appreciate your standing up for them. That being said, I stand by my original statement.

    • @JohnSmith-ev1sm
      @JohnSmith-ev1sm Рік тому +1

      @@leighannenight I'm not feeling protective. I'm suggesting "micro aggression" is something akin to wanting to feel victimized for everything under the sun. I saw one woman in there who was swinging beams around, clearly comfortable with the work she was doing and her husband and the friends she was helping out. I saw another woman admitting being stressed out, but not due to "micro aggression" but simply due to the building process and feeling insecure due to her lack of knowledge, while also feeling exhilarated and happy with the process and her ever increasing skills and knowledge.
      In short, you'll probably be much happier in life if you stop looking for "micro agressions" and signs of being victimized and marginalized. You can choose to be upset by every tiny insignificant detail in life, or you can choose to live happy.
      I'm not suggesting you didn't have a bad experience, I'm saying in this video I saw no such thing.

    • @leighannenight
      @leighannenight Рік тому +1

      @@JohnSmith-ev1sm In the video there is a tense scene where they're trying to lay a beam down. What they are doing is highly dangerous both to their physical being and to the project but it's a necessary step. Several people are yelling at each other and there is a point where Barron has tell everyone to stop and take a second to breath. Then James is shown explaining that he will not do an action without being able to see what he is doing (which is totally reasonable), but there is an implication that there was an expectation there which was not communicated. A little later, Elsa refers to the last video that they published in which she omitted a scene of her crying. If you watched that video, you will see James picking at Elsa as she tries to complete a task. He is giving her reasonable advice but there is a palpable adversarial tone there, questioning her ability to do a seemingly simple task. With all that context in place, it is not unreasonable or incorrect to perceive micro-aggressions taking place.
      This statement that you made, "In short, you'll probably be much happier in life if you stop looking for "micro agressions" and signs of being victimized and marginalized. You can choose to be upset by every tiny insignificant detail in life, or you can choose to live happy." can be viewed as a micro-aggression. "every tiny insignificant detail"? If it made someone have to go cry alone in a car than it's not insignificant. By saying this: "I'm suggesting "micro aggression" is something akin to wanting to feel victimized for everything under the sun." You have implied that I (the person you are responding to) is seeking to feel victimized despite the fact that you don't know me at all. That is another example of a micro-aggression. It doesn't mean you're a bad person it just means that maybe you just don't get where I am coming from which is okay. (and yes, that last statement that I made there could also be viewed as a micro-aggression if you like.)
      I'm commenting on this because you directly challenged me and I would like to clarify my point. Why are you so hyper-focused on the fact that I, a complete stranger, used the term micro-aggression? By definition the word applies whether you personally see it or not. Why does it matter to you if I acknowledge that I may have had a similar experience with micro-aggressions?
      I reiterate that my original comment was for other people who see it and can relate (and by the fact that other people have liked my comment I take that to mean some people do, which in my eyes makes it a worthwhile comment.

      @leighannenight Рік тому

      I want to also note that I am not trying to speak for Elsa here. I don't know if she perceives this in the way I do, but I do really appreciate that she is showing us vulnerability.
      Additionally, I want to add that, in regards to the situations I describe in some of my other comments, that all parties seemed to have recovered and handled the these situations gracefully. That goes for Elsa, Barron and also James.

    It's looking amazing guys! What wonderful friends you have made in James and Doreen! They are awesome people. I am so excited for you all building your home .I hope to have that experience one day. I want a tiny home..that's all I would need or want. I am 59 ..my children are grown .I live with my daughter and her family. I have leukemia so not really able to do a lot. I have been living vicariously through you all and all of my other UA-cam friends for a few years now. I can't wait until you finish your home and decorate it..it will be fantastic I know.. I can see it now. Love you guys very much

    Sometimes all you need is a good cry. I've never built a house so I can't imagine how stressful it must be for you guys, but when you look at your completed house you can say we did it, we built our home 💪😊 Sending love and hugs to you both ❤️🤗

    Wow! Just wow!! Elsa I could cry with you. It’s amazing watching your home build step by step. Y’all, James, Doreen and crew are so knowledgeable and know exactly how to work with the logs. The logs and their notches reminded me of Lincoln Log building toys my son had. This is going to be one fabulous home and thank you for taking us along with videos. These videos will mean so much to you and Barron in years to come.I know you have so much going on editing and building …. great big thank you. So look forward to your next video.

    It is just surreal that you and Barron' ended up picking a property that unknowingly to both of you at the time had exactly the right neighbors you needed, with exactly the right experience, knowlwdge.skills and resources whi were willing to share. Just an amazing community, as you all help each other out in so many ways. Need more of that in the world today.

    When you're all moved in, you could print off and hang some pictures or video stills of the house's progress as it was being built. It would be such a cool conversation piece to have in your house!

    I related to this on a spiritual level. Back last winter when I set the Trusses for my steel house, I was a nervous wreck. I SHOULD have rented a telehandler, but instead thought I could manage with the front end loader on my tractor. It was very terrifying, and quite dangerous. A miscommunication between me and the guy operating actually twisted one of the beams out of square, but i was able to get it bent back mostly where it needed to be. Stressful, but worth it !

    Doreen and James are your incredible guardian neighbors, if I were religious I’d say angels, love the playfulness, wisdom and respect for safety! Linseed oil will need to be reapplied every few years but the natural scent makes the home a bit cozy in its own way! I used to sing a made up ditty to the kiddos ‘it’s okay to cry when you’re happy, cry when you’re sad, cry when you’re scared and cry when you’re mad, let it go, let it go, let all the tears flow until you find peace in your soul’. May this journey continue to be filled with the vastness of all that is good about living on this planet!
