High End Munich 2022 Day 2

- Munich High End 2022 day two was as analog action-packed as was day one. Second day videos tend to get somewhat lower viewer numbers, but you can be sure this video contains product debuts and events you really do not want to miss, including the saxophonist Jerome Sabbagh playing live in the Stenheim/darTzeel room backed by a recording of his bandmates. The illusion of the group playing live worked surprisingly well and even translated well recorded to stereo shotgun microphone. darTzeel introduced a new MC phono cartridge.
Franc Kuzma runs you through the new Safir 9 tonearm, Hegel introduces a
brand new preamp and amp, Acoustical Systems introduces a new deluxe
version of the Axiom tonearm called the “Grande Complication”, completely
fabricated from Titanium, Timet 1100, HD18 Tungsten and aerospace
magnesium (my review of the “standard” Axiom will appear in the September
Stereophile). Acoustical Systems’ Dietrich Brakemeier also showed computer
animated renderings of a new, soon to be introduced turntable called “Astellar” that can accept up to five arms.
Funk Firm’s Arthur Khoubesserian shows his new Kepler turntable with multiple arms that you can rotate so the desired arm is ideally positioned. The ‘table offers both direct and belt drive, plus vacuum hold-down. A new company, Luphonic, introduced a pair of moderately priced, interesting “H” shaped turntables and its own tonearm. All components seemed built to a very high standard.
Serbia-based Auris Audio introduced two highly sophisticated looking tonearms as well as a pair of new turntables.
AMG, now distributed in America by Sierra Sound, introduced the Giro MK II turntable, while new horizon, an Italy-based company introduced a full array of turntables with various options, priced from €399 to €5300 for a stunning looking, feature-packed floating frame suspended, double plinth ‘table.
Esoteric went “all in” with vinyl playback, introducing its first turntable, the $75,000 Grandioso T1 featuring a 42 pound platter utilizing a patented “contact free” magnetic drive mechanism that looked and felt spectacular. It wasn’t playing so I didn’t get to hear it, or much at the show because there was so much to cover, there really wasn’t time to listen to much. That’s okay with me because you really can’t judge what you hear under show conditions and reviewers who fetish over show sound are wasting their and your time, in my opinion.
Döhmann Audio showed the Helix One Mk2 turntable in the Zellaton room with a brand new Reed 5A tangential tracking pivoted arm mounted on it fitted with a DSA Grand Master optical cartridge. Sweden-based Engstrom introduced the M-Phono MM/MC preamp featuring “pencil” tubes and a step up transformer, a version of which was originally found in its Monica preamplifier.
Finally at the end of the second day I encountered the Faber’s Power GM Phono V. 3.0 J-FET array phono preamp that features RIAA and a variety of other curve options. The designer insisted to me that Capitol Records used the Columbia curve well into the stereo era and attempted to prove it by playing a Nat “King” Cole stereo record that did sound better using the Columbia curve, but that proves nothing! We argued respectfully for a while, with me braced by the thought that soon I’d be enjoying an outstanding selection of wine at a wonderful Italian seafood restaurant. I’m sorry, but according to all the evidence I’ve collected over the years, almost every label, including and especially Columbia and Capitol, switched to the RIAA curve as the stereo record era dawned. There’s just no convincing some people! Day 3 coming up!
how about a connected or wireless mic for folks and yourself to talk into? visuals are very good but the audio is barely understandable sometimes...you're an audio guy right? ... 🎱 🎯

I love the old mate Frank who got angry about 75,000 turntable price tag. I wonder how many he sells. The guess is zero. What a delusional human.

It's amazing, the steinheim jazz demo is remarkably convincing and yet....just his tuning up sounds SO alive and present and as good as the back-up band is, those drums immediately feel (on the recording here, I wasn't in the room) just ever so much a scooch level down in reality. I think it's a testament both to how great such a system is and simultaneously a reminder as to why we love this stuff in the first place and what we're shooting for.
Michael Fremer's TrackingAngle UA-cam channel is up with its first video!

Really loved the live sax with the recorded band. Brilliant, thank you.

The guy from Funk Firm, Arthur, is quite rude and he thinks he knows it all! The average man in the street cannot afford £75k for a turntable!!

Tonearm is always the biggest area of compromise in any system. I would like to see more innovation in tonearm design, and more specific coverage of tonearms
It's amazing the engineering still going into vinyl reproduction.
Really?A hifi power fuse? 😂
It would be interesting to compare in blind listening with consumer level HiFi equipment of the 80s of the 20th century. Do all these super bells and whistles affect the sound quality or just the price?
Many may say, Just the price,

From someone like you who is in the sound business, shouldn't the audio be a LOT better?
This video needs subtitles!!
Really interesting video let down by truly awful sound quality. How ironic! I'm no expert but sounds to me like Michael is using the wrong microphone type? Is it an omni ? Shouldn't he be using a directional microphone in such a noisy environment? 🤔

hi as a music listener phono or another source i have to say this new áudio turntables, pre-amps, phono pre-amps, etc,are going ridiculously high, being increasingly difficult to buy new and choosing used instead... I think something needs to change in this business.

Was really hoping we would see the OMA room as the firm gets so little coverage and is something so different in this high end fields of sheep and the plethora of used car salesmen types in this video trying to flog yet another “revolutionary advance” that’s not!
OMA is covered in the Munich Day 1 video.
Please consider a camera with image stabilization

Can’t see any Audiophile spending $9,000. On a New preamp from Hegel known for making good quality integrated Amplifiers, upper Mid-Fi products. unless it from one of the following companies. EAR, VAC, AR, Townsend (they have two passive preamps), Aesthetix, ML, there’s a new Korean Company making preamps and Amps. Wu Audio, Chord they make great DAC’s and one preamp, I know there’s a lot Hi-End Preamps out there..
I kind of like vinyl, have 6000, but feel we are truly in the past when seeing this video. We need to de-materialise the world as much as possible. Great live music will always be better than recorded music. The vinyl obsession is a trap. Don't get caught. Stream and get a life!
It makes me dizzy there are so many different components, some very nice ones ! Dreams are made from looking forward and after seeing all this stuff , just Wow !
Thanks again for this great video.

When the person you've got doing the subtitles types "donuts" instead of "tonearms", "dirt table" instead of "turntable", and by far the most hilarious, "the donald" instead of "tonearm" you know you've got to forget about hiring on the cheap from the Chinese laundry and for a few dollars more re-hire.
I'm left wondering if Rangel ever returned Michael's cat. See 1:10:20.
Fun how even with the mic Michael is using and UA-cam compression, the live sax sounds better than any of the systems shown.
Hi-turning circuit breaker replacement product. Great idea. 20Amp fuse with 12 gauge wire. with 25amp Fuse you’ll need 10Gauge wire!

Michael - love your videos but the sound is often somewhat muffled or otherwise suppressed. Are you using only an on-board camera mic? Perhaps a lavalier would help?

Wow ! Audiophile fuses and circuit breakers :)
Yep, and there are people who buy this.
yes but a fuses is better than circuit breaker rcd, what causes noise on the line a fuse doesn't.
you could just buy a DC blocker lcl, if you got an empty space in the consumer unit and run it after in series with the RCA breaker.
about $30
@@ener5361 Yes, those who actually listen to their systems and see whether it makes a difference rather than just make snarky comments.
Oh, and if you don't hear a difference, most dealers and manufacturers of such things offer a full refund.

Some lovely kit and interesting ideas, but just how do some of these characters keep a straight face, after when asked what their TT costs say “75,000 Euros” for something probably costing no more than 1k to manufacture? It’s obscene, utterly deplorable. I support the audio industry, am a small part of that industry, hand making loudspeakers, but could not sleep at night if I sold out and took part in this obscene practice of such vast over pricing of kit which for the most case offers nothing much over anything these days made at a tenth of what they charge. It’s getting difficult to actually buy truly awful kit even at entry level.
I contest that this show actually offers anything cutting edge at all. It offers a wide choice of very interesting concepts, sone lovely engineering but for the most part is vastly over hyped, over priced jewellery.
Which product costing 75K do you think cost 1K to manufacture?
I never knew employees, factories and manufacturing were all free, that employees didn't want benefits, and marketing was also free.
I always read "I could make that myself for ($X)" but I never see people going into business to undercut the other company.
The prices are aimed at the hyper rich, that shell out $10K just for a dinner at a fine restaurant, they are not for us plebs, but yeah, agree with you 100% Sadly for us there are people with the money that will easily spend that amount and more on a tonearm, therefore they will keep charging that amount until the sales drop dramatically.
$75,000 for?? 5 lb turntable with three arms 75,000?????? Their is 10k tables that work circles around this. super silly.

Damn, even Kuzma’s catalog of products is beautiful. It was quite heartwarming to hear Rangel Vasev’s story about his Ramar brush, and especially how he was able to quit his job due to the positive review you wrote. Michael, you’re helping dreams come true, I tell ya! Thanks for this 3 parts series of vids totaling approximately 4 hours of The High End Munich show. It’s certainly appreciated, Michael.
Michael Fremer's TrackingAngle UA-cam channel is up with its first video!
A fuse won't change your sound. This is just ridiculous and yes I know what Im talking about because Im a electrician. If you want the best power for your hifi then draw a separate line with its own fuse and ground. You can also use shielded cabel. Then make sure you connect all your gear to that outlet.

there are an est. biliion people starving or malnourished in poverty. and here you see people who dont give a hoot. If these dont give a hoot selfish gear heads donated their enormous excess wealth to UNICEF etc they would feel alot less self centered.
