I wouldn't say a Joe Bonamassa, Jim Hendrix or John Mayer, for example, using overdrive/distortion to increase the loudness of his playing does not equate to the edges use of effects. Thats I just my opinion but I see him as more of a good effects player, not guitar player and I think he would agree with that too.
He still had an absolutely massive impact on guitar playing and definitely revolutionised the way we see effects but as a guitar player is a bit mediocre as I think he could only really play a singular style of heavily effected guitars, still a good, good guitar player if you know what I mean, I think the video with Jimmy Page and Jack White showed that.

U-2 is really an instrumental trio fronted by a mediocre vocalist. Their bass player is no Jack Bruce, the drummer ain't Ginger Baker, and Edge doesn't have Clapton's technical chops, so he has has to lean on his gimmick. Bono's a crap singer, but occasionally he writes a transcendent piece of music, which is most often given wings by Edge's playing. He has the best voice in the band as well (listen to Van Diemens's Land). If he fronted the band and they replaced Bono, Mullen and Clayton, they'd have a powerhouse group.

There is no such thing as "overrated"
Someone's "rating" describes someone's public interest or popularity.
In the subjective world of music, the collective opinions are what drives a musician's popularity or "rating"
So collective opinion drives popularity. You can NOT "over" rate someone. Their rating (collective opinion) of value is a reality.
      For example purposes only....
If a survey finds that 80% of people prefer chicken over steak, that leaves 20% that prefer steak.
Even if you are a part of that 20 percent for steak,...Chicken is not "overrated" because this is subjective and based entirely from collective opinion and 80 percent say otherwise.

Very few have managed to create their own sound like he has. And if you think all you need is a Strat, Vox, and delay, you need to check out more of U2's work. I recognize the "Is that all?" reflex when I saw analyses of the Edge's guitar work. On the other hand, 1) see how much effort it costs dialing in the multiple delays pedals, and 2) there is a huge difference between creating a sound and recreating a sound. In recreating you know where you are heading, and what proved ro work, but in creating a sound you don't. And you don't know the appeal yet. Granted, the fingerwork doesn't seem impressive, but I think he is more of a sound sculptor than a pure guitarist. He created something everybody knows and is widely revered. You can copy that but you can't achieve something similar from scratch. So, mixed feeling here too, but hats off, people may overrate him, but he himself is not overrated.

Thanks so much Chris. That’s a really generous and perceptive review-perceptive not only about The Edge, but about how a consensus evolves from individual intuitions. These intuitions, I think, often outstrip mere ‘judgement’, which may be why we often feel there’s something wrong about an opinion but find it hard to identify what that is. As for learning to do things (such as work with delay) I suspect that all of us have the experience of finding we can just do some things without much thought while others require lots of application and may elude us anyway. (I think I remember you saying once that you found that guitar came to you pretty naturally when you started out). I wonder if The Edge didn’t just discover early that he had a knack for this area of technique and just stuck with it, rather than trying to develop a very wide range of abilities on guitar. I’ve done many tribute gigs to Neil Young and he’s a clear example of someone who found his strengths early and just stuck with them, using energy and a determined kind of expressiveness in his lead playing to force his technique above its limitations. I probably haven’t explained this well and may anyhow be wrong, but I’m grateful to you for helping to advance discussion in this tricky area.

We all have our own tastes. I never cared for the arguments about who the greatest guitar player ever is because it's art. It's all subjective. You can say this or that musician is more technically skilled, but you're all right in that there's so much more to music than just knowing your way around the fretboard. It's just that for my money, I don't find the Edge that interesting. It breaks my heart when people bash Paul Kossoff for not being a fast player or that he was too simple. But they don’t get it, Koss played some of the most soulful guitar I can think of and his control with his bends and vibrato and beautiful feedback, how he used Lesley speakers were in a league of his own. UA-cam doesn't pay royalties for the right to these works so why should they be able to profit? The copyright claims are actually against UA-cam itself - by way of allowing creators to post unlicensed materials and then sell advertising. They are legally required to comply with US Copyright law so they claim the ad revenue on behalf of the rightsholder, demonetize, or remove the infringing videos based upon the request.
UA-cam should just settle with ASCAP and BMI to pay the royalties in the way bar owners do for cover bands that perform popular songs. That would be the single best all around solution to the problem.

Jimi Lee, why would Edge not be a great guitarist? Is shredding and technical mastery the only way "greatness" is measured on the instrument? How about the emotion and sonic color created? How about how the playing fits the context of songs it is on? How about the originality of the playing? All those elements, to me, are more indicative of great playing than sheer ability to play complex runs of note combinations in a manner akin to singing the ABC's or State names as a show of the whole possible pallete.
To me great guitar playing lies in how it makes the listener feel and how it serves the music it is part of. Edge does that with instantly recognizable uniqueness. That is the artwork.

What defines a great guitarist is the sound that comes out of the guitar, not necessarily what his hands can do. Some of the fastest and most technically proficient guitarists aren't great guitarists, imo, because they don't make music. I admire their technical ability and the hours of practice that went into developing that proficiency, but so many of those guys don't know the first thing about making music.
Making music is the objective purpose of a guitar - not just playing notes. Pretty much anyone can learn to play the guitar with technical proficiency if they put in the time. Liked this take more than I thought I would based on title. The Edge plays amp -- he's a master of tone, texture, timing, taste. "A sonic architect."

The Edge is within the Ringo Syndrome. Plays with famous band, integral part of the band's sound, very creative, plays things that sound GOOD but technically limited or at least non-virtuosic. If you feel technique is an end in itself, you'll never like Ringo Syndrome players. If you see technique as means to an end and it's end that matters then you can appreciate what they bring.

Chris you’re spot on. I’m kinda dating myself here but I grew up in the era when what The Edge was doing on guitar was new. He wasn’t doing anything anyone else was doing. His riffs, use of effects and style fit the band he’s in. And they were successful. If you’re a guitarist then you’re a musician. If you’re a musician then you’re an artist. As an artist there should always be room for everyone...and that’ll leave room for you. I can appreciate U2’s spot in the industry. I can appreciate what part The Edge plays in his band. And I can appreciate his use of effects. Not many guitarists today gig, jam, or experiment without a pedalboard at their feet or at least a couple of pedals.

There are thousands of really great, talented and amazing guitar players out there who will never be anywhere near as successful as The Edge has been. Being "really good" at the guitar is only one fraction of what it takes. The Edge is known through out the world....and he did it with the musical and guitar talent he was given. ....what we on youtube think of him doesn't really matter....

Hello from the late 2020 lockdown.
The best guitarists tend to be either the fastest, the most original, the most creative, the ones with the ability to play the most scales and chords, the ones with the ability to play in the most styles, the ones that play in your favourite bands, the ones that produce the music that touches enough souls to make a career out of it, the ones that touch your soul with their music, or a combination of any or all of the above.
My guess is that the majority of people commenting on this thread are guitarists.
The main thing is to keep playing and get better if you can, but always enjoy it.

they only represent someone elses opinion
if you believe your opinion superceeds anyone elses keep it to yourself!

I guess it depends on what you like from a player. If you want just technique & proficiency then I'm sure there are maybe 'better' proponents out there but if your yardstick is 'created the greatest riffs' & music that has spoken to millions of people around the world, then Dave has to be top 10. Put it this way, I'd rather listen to 8 mins of Dave playing Comfortably Numb than 1 minute of anything by any of the 'shredders' but maybe that's just me.

It's definitely easier today to sit between a ping pong delays with sub-divisions and dotted 8th/16th notes; you have advanced digital delays with "ducking" functions that drops the volume when needed to keep the repeats from tying up together. To be honest, that's the only way early on I was able to sit in between the 2 delay settings in a way that works (I also don't really use delay in any big way, I'll use it for lead playing or maybe for clean arpeggios in my rhythm; I got along just fine with simple analog Friday without tap tempo for a long time, though I'm using delay in a more intricate way, but not by much).
However doing that type of delay like the Edge uses, how he was doing it early on; namely just setting up 2 EHX Memory Man's, dialed in just using the knobs takes a far more patient player.

You can’t be overrated in the Arts - taste is subjective.
Can you be overrated as a 100m sprinter for example? You can clinically assess the abilities and record of a 100m sprinter or weight lifter by analysing the data in an objective way. Even then, you can introduce subjective elements to an athlete’s rating or reputation.
I am not sure what the purpose of this video is. You don’t like delay? You don’t have many U2 albums?
If it’s guitar effects that bother you then you may end up only listening to Jeff Beck who doesn’t use any and yet is about as good as anyone in generating a diverse sonic landscape in his playing by simply using his fingers and volume control.

I totally agree. The Edge is master of creating textures. As you well said, something between a lead and a rhythm player. We still have to consider that the band is mostly a trio with a vocalist (who very occasionally plays some additional rhythm guitar), and the rhythm session (bass+drums) is very minimalist (that’s a part of their style, not a criticism). That means a lot of space, which The Edge has been able to fulfill with very tasteful and musical textures. Yes, his playing is identifiable in nanoseconds, what means that he has a very unique “voice” in the instrument, the ultimate goal for any musician. Additionally: in the first couple U2 albums The Edge was able to create the same level of beautiful “layers” without using delays.
