Don't beat yourself up over giving up and doing what was best for your body and your mind.
Stay safe, be patient with yourself. Hugs!

"It's like a visual diary of my experiences and imagination..."
Thank you very much for reminding that animation, as an art, can be a visual representation of stories that we animators want to show to our audience. Thanks also for conveying that progress > perfection.
I've been struggling to finish my animations due to my fear that everyone (my professor) will see mistakes (stiffness, uneven solid forms, etc.) and will dislike them after watching. I also have been hating my (extremely) slow pace and comparing it to my peers who already have a different level of skill and experience in animation.

Hey Howard If I might ask how you go about your animation commissions I'd love to see a video of behind the scenes of how you do them, Like how you accept one, how do you communicate and what are the check list you do stuff like that. If it's possible It will surely help more fellow animators myself included. Thank you for what you do and we learned a lot from you as 2D animators! Keep on going strong.

    really good advice, very helpful..
I'd remember that. I only uploaded my animations back in 2015 cos , I had to delete them from my sisters Laptop, later on as I started learning more about the craft of Animating, I realize I did not have the background and was just really talented at drawing.... no storytelling.
all the stories I had written in my early teens just stay by by bed in my bedroom watching me slip away.
I registered for your Animator guild contest, yet to decide on what to animate. My online presence doesn''t reflect my current capabilities as an animator.
Today I will start working on my Animation...

Thanks Howard. I've definitely "hated" my own animated project from time to time, probably because I'm comparing a lot to others, or I have a higher expectation than what I'm delivering.
But these positive mantras are great and I probably need to recite them myself too.
Thanks again for a great video. I love your general attitude. So positive. :)

It's funny how I felt like this video wasn't for me when I usually relate to these topics, and it hit me when I was watching the video and realized that I actually developed the same objective habit to grade my animations. They may seem bad, I may hate them now, but I know that these are a representation of my peak skill at this point in time, it's a time capsule of my habits and techniques (or lack thereof). This is why I have a big storage of animation compilations showing my progress cause it helps me hate my animations less when I think "in a few months, this animation won't compare to my future skills" which instead of making me hate my work, it makes me excited to continue working and see how irrelevant I can make my previous work look. What artists should compare themselves to isn't other or better artists, it's their past selves so we can see our own growth instead of chasing people who have already grown.

This video when it came out halped me push to finish my shortfilm in time. So thank u for it. The mantras and boost of hope in this dark mindset I was trapped in for months. I finally finished it and feel like I became free and my head is less crowded now that theese stories and scenes are out there. Thank u.

Thanks for the video! Seems I'm not the only one who finds it hard to love the art I make. I used to post fanarts (did help improve my art) but later on, I hated it. Fell into a void, and got envious of other artists. Now, I see upcoming artists with major following and views on what I used to do or just simple art with a comical story. Maybe if I had not hated/cringed at my art and continued, I could have developed something but I realize having to take a step back, opens more doors of possibilities in art.

Thanks for this! Because of your contest I made a tiny film. It's a start. Been wanting to tell a story through animation but lately haven't been satisfied with the result. My stubbornness wants me to go without a reference and I spiral into oblivion with how wrong my style looks yet some people have encouraged me that it's okay to have a naive style. I'm kinda conflicted but certainly want to keep going and making animations. Gotta keep putting in effort no matter how difficult and painful it is for me.

You Shiina is the only artist that made me take art more seriously, simply put i've been stuck in a cycle of "i'm not good enough" for 3 years trying to improve and when i did i bought a graphic tablet last week in hopes of taking the next step. i'm back to that cycle because my digital art isn't as good as my physical art and i have what call the "ctr+z curse". nothing feels good enough and it's hard.

  • @Crospic

The films I made have lived with me through the years. I cringe by even the thought of my earliest work, yet the film had to exist somehow for me to progress. Now, I sometimes still feel embarassed not because of quality, but because of the subject matter of what I'm trying to make.
It seems like that in order to move on with the craft, embarrassment is inevitable. So you have to have to contemplate your mortality that since you are screwed no matter what from it, then you can just let it be.

"Thanks a lot for your encouragement for us to move forward, this topic is important for any artist, developer or anyone who drives to achieve a goal in this world. Hopefully important messages like these spread more in the future, we live in a world where competition is everywhere. Maybe this is why most of us can't appreciate their own work. So best way to solve this is positivity and Never Give Up! "

How to not hate your art
Step 1: Don't listen to people who try to be your critic who you didn't even ask for advice. Including family.

    • @HowardWimshurst
      @HowardWimshurst  Рік тому +2

As Chris Voss once said: "If someone speaks it means they want something"
It might take some deep thinking, but that person who gave you an un-wanted critique DOES want something. The most likely thing is that they want to be respected. They want to be seen as having good taste and sharp opinions. Maybe they want that expert status in your eyes and the eyes of any on-lookers. Or maybe they just want to shut you up because you are becoming a painful reminder to them of everything they abandoned when they were young.
Their opinions are worth so little. After all, everyone has an opinion. Far fewer have something to contribute.

Thanks for the video, a lot of that video many people can relate to and I believe that's a helpful mantra. This video is about the emotions and feedback before releasing a film. I feel some of that advice is helpful for after you release it too. Focusing on the positives, noting this is the best I've done at the film and a symbol of your self expression as you said is great. I like that story and can relate. Sometimes when dealing with negative feedback or emotions, it's helpful to show it to more people combined with focusing on the positives. Chances are one other person will like it and appreciate it. My personal story was with releasing my short film last year. I had mixed emotions; I was glad for the mainly positive feedback but a little upset about some people not getting it and not getting a prize. My usual strategy with these feelings is to show it to more people and be glad whatever extra positives I get back and then move on. So I sent it to my local film festival and got an official selection for it and will watch it at a cinema in three weeks. Lastly for anyone not thinking of submitting your film, please watch "Fanime Family Fun Night" episodes. They showed and joked about work that wasn't the greatest but I feel the people who made this were so full of enthusiasm and passion for their fanwork it was inspiring.
