Also, be sure to check out my blog post on transcription and translation! I tried something new and made a fun fact sheet to go with this video. You can download the fact sheet on my blog! Let me know what you think about the fact sheet. Should I continue making them? learningsciencewithdrvanessa.wordpress.com/2021/01/04/transcription-and-translation/

stopped watching after transcription: explanation was opaque. What does 3", 5" mean? No explanation given.
    Just poor, sorry

It’s important to understand that one strand runs 5’ to 3’ and the other strand runs 3’ to 5’. One complimentary to the other. Strands are read from 5’ to 3’ as correct orientation. Which means RNA polymerase makes DNA in the 5’ to 3’ direction. I don’t go into the detail of what that means as most teachers don’t for lower level Biology classes.
However in higher level classes, like Molecular Bio, this is probably discussed in more detail. The 5’ and 3’ refer to the number of the carbon atom in the deoxyribose sugar that binds to the phosphate group. This depends on orientation. So on one end the phosphate group would be bound to the 5’ carbon on the deoxyribose and on the other end it would be seen on the 3’. This is a lot of detail that isn’t needed to understand the general concept of transcription and translation, and just would complicate understanding. In higher level courses, once this base understanding is made, it would make sense to discuss this more and actually read DNA as it’s organic structure, rather than just understanding how base pairs change.
