Well, while the story is pretty cool, the rest of the movie, sound and sound effects, visual effects etc are touched up. There was a project in 2013 or something where a group did it. This cut was a 3-D touched up, sound corrected version of that, with a frame by frame correction. That in no way takes away from the brilliance that is Sholay

I believe this ending was way more effective than Thakur killing Gabbar. It develops and elevates the character of thakur. Killing someone when he is on your feet helpless, is not a hard task. Funfact - in director's original cut Thakur kills Gabbar mercilessly, but it was indian censor board which made them alter the climax, plus people say that the change also had something to do that times political scenario in India.
Correct. However, in hindsight, the theatrical cut ending was probably the most underwhelming part of such a perfect film. Having Gabbar arrested was a dumb idea because we know how capable he is of escaping jail again. Having Gabbar killed off in the director’s cut of the film made more sense and seeing Thakur mourn the loss of his family felt very realistic. That ending served as a perfect conclusion rather than the theatrical ending which felt rushed and anticlimactic.
As to why Amitabh wasn't shooting all the time and dropping his gun, well he was playing hero's friend. It was a supporting role. Dharmendra was the hero and senior actor to him. So, script must have been written to make sure, Dharmendra is not disrespected in any way, he being the hero of the movie. That's just Indian culture thing. Amitabh just had one solo scene in the entire movie... The scene with Mausi where he pitches for Veeru. Yet, it is him we talk more of when we talk about Sholay. That's the mastery he had on his craft.
Some other scene was also there like dynamite blast ,and some subtle intimate scene with Jaya bahaduri and one with that ramu kaka discussing about Radha ,and when it comes to dharm ji ,even in veeru scene with basanti ,jai was always there even before that tanga song dharm ji got one scene without jai that too after jai demise, because in movie jai was the one whose controlling the situations and veeru was just following him and yes he has less dialogues than dharam ji but the way he potrayed his character as a jai he just slayed it ,his silent subtle behaviour just standout, there was no scene in the movie where he was overshadowed by anyone not even by dharam ji

But later things changed and Gabbar and Jai become real enemies ( enemies is a hard word ) but they had a rift between both of them.
I agree with you he does resemble Mark Ruffalo and also I think Mark Ruffalo reminds me of Abhay Deol (who is the son of Ajit Deol, the brother of Dharam Paji)
The movie is an iconic one. Each actor in the movie was iconic. Every dialogue people remember by heart even now, after 50 years! The actors were iconic .. the blind Imam (priest - A.K Hangal), his son who was sent for job but was killed (Sachin Pilgaonkar) , the jailor (Asrani - iconic comedian), The barber in the jail (Keshto Mukherjee - another iconic comedian of 60s and 70s), Late Sanjeev Kumar, Late Amjad Khan (Gabbar) ....goodness! each actor in the movie are known to be as institution in themselves!
There is an alternate ending which was removed for apparently being violent because the government had imposed an emergency at the time and had too much censorship on news, media etc including movies. In that ending Thakur kills Gabbar himself.
Since you have entered the old times, you should watch some old movies as well. The old heroes were legendary in their own right. Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Manoj Kumar, Jeetendra, Vinod Khanna, Rajesh Khanna, and many more are the heroes. And all of them were very handsome heroes of their time ❤❤❤❤❤
Man, the memories with this film. I read somewhere that there was some argument between the main leads about who would be Gabbar Singh because each liked the character and wanted to be the one to play him. It wasn't until the then unknown Amjad Khan was cast that the others reluctantly accepted their assigned roles. One of my favourite Sanjeev Kumar (the Thakur) movies is 'Angoor' (Grapes), a comedy about two sets of twins. I think it's still on one of the OTT platforms and would certainly recommend it.
In the scene after Basanti's dance, Jai Veeru did not kill Gabbar because they had promised to hand Gabbar back alive to Thakur promises mattered. This was shown in those times. That is why Jai Veeru did not kill Gabbar in this movie.❤
This was one of the biggest multi starrer movie of that time. Nobody expected this film to be a success. But it is the 3rd highest grossing Indian film. This made the career of Amjad Khan. His character/acting in this movie is considered as the benchmark for acting as a negative character. Fun fact -> The real location is in the south of India. However, it is being depicted as Chambal - a area in North India.
Amitabh Bachchan was famous for angry young man that time. He became superstar and ruled bollywood in 1980s and 1990s. 'Amar Akbar Anthony, Deewar, Lawarish, Sharabi, Namak Halal, Naeeb, Kalia, are few of his superhits movies. You can start with a 'Amitabh seriese starting from movie' Zanjeer'
The writers of this movie are Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, Bollywood’s most successful screenwriting duo and also Salman Khan and Farhan/Zoya Akhtar’s fathers.
The original ending of Sholay had Thakur killing Gabbar Singh, but the censors found it too violent. So, they reshot it with Gabbar getting arrested instead.
Absolutely must watch Dharmji's classic Bollywood movie Krodhi, one of his finest career heartfelt performances. Especially a climax moments similar to Sholay, but with a different twist how Dharmji fights.
The actor(Sachin Pilgaonkar) who played young cute boy became a big actor, writer, director and producer in Marathi movie industry. He became a crucial member of the fraternity in 90s and early 2000s. His most recent movie released last month and did good. He is still going strong. You two saw his daughter in Mirzapur. She is very active in ott world.
Amitabh did his own stunts till he was almost fatally injured during the shooting of Coolie (1983). When they shot the scene with the dacoits are chasing Basanti's cart, the wheel came off the cart unexpectedly, but the stunt woman (Reshma Pathan) kept going, so they incorporated in to the scene. She was injured, but continued to work on the shoot.
It was released in 1975 when India was under emergency (akin to martial law) so the censors didn't support an ending that glorified violence, otherwise the original ending had thakur maiming gabbar singh via the nails in the boots..
In the original ending he kills Gabbar by pushing him on a metal spike. You can still see this version. I watched the movie on Eithusan and it was this original version.
Watching this with you guys again after years 2 things stand out to me: 1. The action sequences are better than 99% of today's films. I sooo wish movies go back to mostly practical stunts. 2. Gabbar Singh is the greatest villain of all time not limited to Indian films.
Fun facts: Basanti and veeru in the movie are also real life husband and wife, also jai and the girl wearing white also are real life husband and wife, moreover, the girl in dance item is stepmother of Salman Khan

Its nice to know you guys watched such a classic from the 70s, if you wanna watch some more of Amitabh Bachans movies from the 70s you guys have to watch "Zanjeer" which actually turned ABs entire arc as an actor. Zanjeer was Amitabhs 1st action movie ever and after that they called him the "Angry Young Man cause after Zanjeer he went on to do a lot of action movies especially when action was a genre that wasnt popular so much in the 70s but Amitabh made it popular hence the title The Angry young man, after Zanjeer you guys should also watch another classic called "Don" played by AB which was later also played by SRK.
It only hit me with your reaction this time..this movie has 5 songs, integral to the plot, 3 flashbacks, one side plot with Ahmed that again routed with the main storyline..2 love stories in tangent..no wonder it was long.
If I say that its classic then i mean it every dialogue in this movie is just too lit that its still famous among the folks this is THE PEAK an epitome of Indian cinema.
43:59 That is “Shashi Kapoor” not “Sanjeev Kumar”. In Gangs of Wasseypur, Faisal refers to himself as Shashi Kapoor and says he was considering himself Amitabh Bachchan but in reality he turned out to be Shashi Kapoor.
Originally, Gabbar had died in the movie, but the government then did not like sending out that kinda message that vigilante justice so this version was shot and released with the corrected scenes we all see now. The original scene movie still can be found in pirated websites so I hear..

Once Upon A Time In The West ...inspired parts of the "Flashbacks". 3. Garden Of Evil ...is where Sholay got the "Coin Toss/Flip" bit. ......and many more that I haven't even noticed. 🙂"
The Original script had Thakur killing Gabbar, Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) asked for the ending to be changed. This was in line with the notion that even if the hero had a compelling reason for revenge, the law should prevail in the end, promoting a lawful message to the audience. Thats why all films show the Police arriving .... Late In those Times you needed a "License" from the Gov to even keep a Radio at Home! or cops would confiscate it. - License Raj Soviet style

Even in the director’s cut, Ahmed’s death scene and Ramlal adding the spikes on the base of Thakur’s shoes were also shown.
@@danyschcaptain2660 wow, that sounds so good. But, even this ending made an impact as it was not easy for thakur to leave him
I realized how good the cinematography is for this movie. I watched about 25 years ago
Really I know Amitabh more so I did not know that Dharmendra is senior to him . Also I like Jai character more so I was so sad when he died 😔😔

I saw Mark Ruffalo first time in Avengers movie 2011, The first thing i said to my friends was he looks like Dharmendra Paaji XD they all laughed but the resemblence is clear.. But yeah both are phenomenal actor
Fun fact: Amjad KHan ( Gabbar) Amitabh (Jai) and Sanjeev Kumar ( Thakur) were best friends in real life..
No he doesn't even look bit of dharmedra
@@KrishanKumar-ec1ch okay opinion differs from others
True. It is just filled with stars. Every shot, every dialogue , music is iconic. Historic.
There is an alternate ending which was removed for apparently being violent because the government had imposed an emergency at the time and had too much censorship on news, media etc including movies.
In that ending Thakur kills Gabbar himself.
You can still see the movie with that original ending and a few extra scenes. It's on Einthusan.
If you want to watch another amazing classic you should really watch 'Anand'.
Was going to write that myself good pick.
"Haan iske baap ne likhe hai"😂
The original ending of Sholay had Thakur killing Gabbar Singh, but the censors found it too violent. So, they reshot it with Gabbar getting arrested instead.
You can still see the original ending on Eithusan.
Absolutely must watch Dharmji's classic Bollywood movie Krodhi, one of his finest career heartfelt performances. Especially a climax moments similar to Sholay, but with a different twist how Dharmji fights.
19:47 This is very famous in India Jabby...police comes after everything is done 🤣 In movies..in movies...
Original ending was better, emergency in india at the time, and the censorship board felt the film will incourage people to be violent!
"Less talking more doing" 😂😂 great lines
Where
The actor(Sachin Pilgaonkar) who played young cute boy became a big actor, writer, director and producer in Marathi movie industry.
There's an alternate version of the climax.. where thakur indeed kills gabbar
Man that scene where amitabh dies! As kid used wreck me! And today after seeing this film after so many years still wrecked me! ❤
Watching this with you guys again after years 2 things stand out to me:
1. The action sequences are better than 99% of today's films. I sooo wish movies go back to mostly practical stunts.
2. Gabbar Singh is the greatest villain of all time not limited to Indian films.
The Reel pair of this movie became Real pair for Both Dharmendra sir and Amitabh sir...
There is a similar movie called China Gate. Lots of legendary actors in that movie as well. Worth a watch.
Fun facts:
Basanti and veeru in the movie are also real life husband and wife, also jai and the girl wearing white also are real life husband and wife, moreover, the girl in dance item is stepmother of Salman Khan
mother in law 😂

Cant believe this is already here. I just finished watching the earlier 2 parts back to back

There are a few movies from 70s that would hold good today as well. Do watch ‘Chupke Chupke’ with very much a similar cast but a comedy. A very good movie. Dharmendra, Amitabh, Jaya Bachchan, Asrani from this movie are in it.
I watched that movie recently only because it was talked too much but I couldn't find it interesting in any way to be considered as classic.

Yeah, it feels so hard after jai's death😢
An alternate ending was also shot and is available. Gabbar gets killed in that.
Another trivia- all the on screen couples ended up being real life couples after the movie. So they indeed had a happy ending.
19:43 exact representation of Indian police. Kick-Ass entrance but way too late always
Jaby is like really ??!! Lol
6:31 this was funny of horse 😅😅😅😅
5:53 I understand that reaction. It’s surprising how audiences of both Bollywood and Hollywood movies are often insensitive to scenes of animal abuse.
The 2nd ending of sholey was best. Thakur killed gabbar with his boot.
I know the end is kinda funny, but it's a legend movie from the past.😂😂😂😂
There is an alternate ending they made at that time, but edited before theater release.😊
Amjad Khan was truly phenomenal in this movie! One of the finest performances of his career :)
The original ending had Thakur killing Gabbar. It's much better than this theatrical version. You can find the scene on the director's cut DVD and here on UA-cam.
This can be called arguably most legend movie from Bollywod. It runs housefull even when its released now in theatres. Its not a movie THE MOVIE from Bollywood...! Every dialogue every character of this movie became iconic.. villain to villain side kick to the horses to Basanti.. every thing about this movie is iconic for indians specially hindi speaking indian audience. !!
Most important mistake even considering it's an old movie was : gabbar was wanted dead or alive , thakur was well within his right to end him .
No he wasn't. That's not how that works. If police is present at the scene when you've caught the wanted criminal, you can't just kill him in front of the cops. The cops can and will arrest you and jail you for it.
@@harshk9342 they are cops , he was cop.. brotheren basically... It could have been allowed.
They are copd for gods sake, not captain America
Well. If you listen the end conversation between his Junior and Thakur. You would get the picture. Killing Gabbar right there cold blooded would have been immoral for someone like Thakur. It would have been prove that he keeps his grudge above the law. @@umwelten988
35:58 Haha... I'm so glad you mentioned that, because I've already commented on this earlier (Part 2/3). So, I'm just gonna copy-paste my own comment.
"Multiple... There are multiple bits taken from various "Westerns".
1. Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid ...inspired Jai & Veeru's friendship/partnership.
Late
In those Times you needed a "License" from the Gov to even keep a Radio at Home! or cops would confiscate it. - License Raj Soviet style
You still can't buy anything unless the govt allows you to buddy.

by the way there are two endings for this movie in the alternate ending thakur kills gabbar himself.

This movie has 2 endings … search for the sholay original ending in which Gabbar dies.
This film is a landmark in Indian Cinema. It was written by two of the greatest writers of Indian Hindi Films- Salim Khan (father of actor Salman Khan) and Javed Akhtar (father of actor-director Farhan Akhtar and Dir. Zoya Akhtar). You guys should call Javed Akhtar on your show and I can guarantee you will have a great time. You can talk to him about almost anything under the sun without getting bored. He is the wittiest man I have seen.
The other version which you didn't see is where Gabbar Singh is killed by Thakur .
There are numerous dialogues in this movie that are so iconic, they are part of our daily lives. Movie is almost 50 yrs old and I wasn’t even born yet I use these dialogues. Why is there so much silence bro? ( Itna sannata kyun hai bhai), Basanti, don’t dance in front of these dogs ( Basanti in kutto ke saamne mat naachna), And what to say about Gabbar each and every dialogue is iconic( give me these hands Thakur, how many men were there kalia, what is the prize money Samba? Guys this is just iconic stuff.
