I am building a fiberglass, 1:8 scale Columbia River Gillnetter model and this video has been my bible-thank you! I have just positioned all my stations so I have a long way to go (doing this piece by piece on my social security!😊), but this video gives me hope! Blessings!
I use to be a plug/mold builder and it is a lot of work. sand sand sand wax wax and wax some more..... I think after spraying it 3 times with gray durtec I would give it a clear coat then wax maybe 3 times and then PVA for a mold release....
Ditto, this is old school for sure. Glad I got to learn this method in the beginning years of my marine career. Then 5 axis took off, then outsourcing of tooling etc.... Glad I got to "Learn" this before it died.....
Unless I missed something...when did you guys remove the framing/wood plug structure? It appears you omitted the process entirely? The video goes from flipping over the entire plug/mold to morphing into a real mold, sans framing structure. What was involved in the removal of the wooden structure, and when was this process done??
Anyone who knows how to build such a boat.i am based in nairobi kenya kindly let me know if you can help nd i am ready to pay for whatever it takes thanks
Seems good so far! Was easy to talk to about his boat Plans t.co/uM8hFDqZOp Guided me in the right direction & helped me understand everything & in the end it was what I wanted
Great video of the process! Did you have lots of blocking out the tooling gel on the inside of the mold from the strip planking printing through? I’ve found it helps to glass the wood plug before fairing but this adds a whole big step and extra cost - but makes the plug surface more stable. Looks like you have a very efficient process - thanks for sharing!
Yes glassing the plug before fairing would be more time consuming and expensive. We always try to keep the overall cost down. This process has worked well for us. A quick finish sanding in the mold took care of any imperfections the strip planking might’ve left. Thank you for the comment!
@Li Li dont lie... I am in this business and in Turkey we have the same machines and that is impossible to make a this big mold less than a day... this big takes about a week... they use cubic PU material. and because it has to be precise cut the head of the cnc machine supposed to turn fast but move slovely... You dont have that tech in chine only babe, as you learn that tech from germany... so dont make it that china has everything and you know things... plus this is not outdated, still used because that tech is 3-5 times much more expensive than this way...

I have a hull already built that went out of business in the early 90s and I wanted to make some slight changes on the hull and make a mold out of it. What is the best way to make a mold from a hull already built? Do what u guys did and use it as a plug and then build around it?
Damn... Whats with the clouds of nasty dust??? How hard is it to get an old furnace fan and tape a couple of furnace filters over the outlet to pull all the dust out so you can see what the heck you are doing. Take it from an old shipbuilder, that that dust is an annoyance now, wait till you get older and it all catches up with you.
Worked in the skincoat/ layup dept. At Doral boats in the early 2000s Had to make molds for components.. A skill that's not taught...it's learned through years and years...no class teaches this.
What are the layers of paintings you’re applying and why do you have to sand them every single time you apply them?? Thanks for your answers. Much appreciated!
moha Abdi The first coat is paint (Gelcoat) after applying fiberglass over Gelcoat the surface gets sanded after curing before other layers of fiberglass gets put on. 2-3 layers can be put on at a time while wet.

I am looking to follow all the procedures of this video to make it for fun!!! I just want to ask you if Will be expensive to build a fibreglass speedboat or just buy one?
Go with buying the cheapest speed boat hull one you can find, i.e. no motor, and a speed boat that are more shipwreck than boat = you has to be good at fiberglassing. You can also make a composite boat : Take an existing wooden boat, make the hull in a perfect condition, but minus paint and tar, then make it *very* dry before you're fiberglassing the wooden hull You can also use an existing wooden boat as a mould, remember to dry the (unpainted!) wood or you will get problems with the fiberglass end result.
Less costly to buy one than build one. There is a massive amount of engineering going into a speed boat hull, any mistakes in construction and boat sinks. Buying one you have a builder to hold responsible for shoddy work in that case. ;)
you notice how there’s no ventilation system in that room? those guys walking around without respirators when they were spraying primer must have lungs of steel or just don’t know the dangers
@@r.c.850 if I made a video showing you how to make a cake & started with the eggs & flour then showed you the finished cake, unless you knew how to make a cake it would not make sense If you are going to show how something is made then show it, dont leave bits out!

There was no footage of this step, but the plug/framing was broken apart and removed by hand after the mold was flipped over.
Yes, I caught that when it was flipped. Thanks!!
4:25 how many fiberglass layers??
4 layers 1-1/2oz mat, 2 layers 2415, 1/2” balsa core, 2 layers 2415, stringers/wheels and you’re done, sounds simple right😂
Hope to see a reasonably priced trawler style boat come from this... need a good great loop boat and more... use cummins engines to top it off.

I am interested in knowing what is the white paint used on the mold and the primer are they some special type or regular wood primer cheers Ed
White is just drywall mud, and the primer is an automotive primer
How was the plug removed from the mold?
Always wondered how this was done! Y'all do great work. The video was done just right!
Hi,can you tell me how many layers has been used to cover the mould ? And the thickness of the fiberglass material ?
awesome, what’s the cost for a mold ?
Nice looking boat good job guys
AL AYHAN
Thank you!
What you didn't show was how you extracted the wooden buck from inside the new mould. I can only presume it was very tight and had to be broken up.
As long as you do a thorough job of waxing the final surface of the bucket, the new mould mostly just peels straight out.
Compressed air. Pops the boat out.
hey thank you for the nice vid, great team work

Just get up and sell the equipments and start💪

what is the gel coating and what brands are offered? and how do you flatten the screwing holes?
3M marine filler or “bondo” works great for filling screw holes, a lot more structural integrity than fairing compounds
I’m confused as to how the mold come off the stand when the curvatures are being placed. How do they not attach it to the stand

I found a boat shop in the yellow pages 20 years ago, called them up for a job and I still work there. I learned so much more than building boats.

Just like building a model boat, but on a massive scale! Well done guys, I love the curves at the bow.

Que materiales le colocó a el molde para el alma. O la estructura queantiene a el molde?
Where can I get the plans and framing to make a plug? Is there somewhere that sells kits or something? Very interested in making a plug.
We drew up the plans to scale, top view, bottom view, side view, all the frames are measured to scale, cut and built no computer, old school.
Peace be upon you. I am from Morocco and have more than 8 years of experience in repairing fiber-lime fishing vessels.

How was the hull taken out of the mold ??????????????
what material is the planking ? 1/4 plywood ? IDK
1/2” mdf
Thank you soo much and God bleess all you
How much would just a blank hull cost?

Yes probably best to use the hull as a plug after fixing any blemishes and making the changes.

About 3 months with a crew of 4

Why are there no stringers on the hull?

Isn't that stern too flat? I'd have expected some curvature and slope here.
Hell, I'd buy the plug and make a boat out of it.
What kind of boat? Manufacturer
What hull/shop ?

Not sure why in this day and age - design in 3D CAD then unfold digitally and laser cut the panels, will fit together like an Ikea flat pack.

All that work before a boat is even built, if that mould is looked after you can build plenty of boats out of it. Bloody big boat.
good job
You didn't show the mold release being applied.
I'm wondering if you can film the part of main deck or flybridge.

Trash,
The wood framing (the plug) was removed from the mold and taken to the trash, not reusable
Everything is very nice but o wonder the result .👍👏👏
Very nice 👍
If I could find one I'd use the mold itself as a boat.
Too much forefoot, boat will bow-rudder and pitchpole not enough deadrise to counter toe -stubbing.
