  • You know that one obscure dinosaur that you never really seem to be able to find a good model of? Not the A-lister that most people think about… unless you are serious about your dinosaurs?
    The pachycephalosaurs seem one of the oft-forgotten dinosaur groups, yet there was always something of the outré that really interested me about the group. And while I’m not that crazy ton one to collect many different versions, I did one at least one good one.
    Well here it is. Coming (what a shock) from PNSO, who seem to have mastered the balanced triumvirate of detail, paintwork, and price. This little dinosaur packs a punch, and I don’t just mean from the skull! So intricately detailed, beautifully (and for me, nostalgically) coloured, this is going to be the definitive Pachycephalosaurus for me. My only disappointment is that PNSO isn’t likely to make more of different poses… I would love to have a Pachycephalosaurus herd!

    Thanks so much for your amazing videos!!
    The reason I love them is because of all the scientific papers you mention. I love all this information and I add most of the papers you mention to my personal collection of scientific articles!
    Thanks so much for keeping us up to date and enriching our knowledge about these amazing creatures.
    This really makes your videos stand out from the rest. And that’s why this is one of my favorite channels.
    Please keep them coming!
    Thanks so much! Love from Mexico! 🇺🇸🤝🇲🇽

      Thank you Carlos that's very kind of you! I am glad that you like the content, as combining toy reviews with talking about dinosaurs probably appeals to a smaller group of viewers, but there's just so much I love about this learning journey I want to share with other dinosaur collectors that it's always a delight to meet a fellow traveller!
      And with PNSO and some of these other models, with their commitment to scientific accuracy, it's plenty of fun to see how they stack up, and really lets us enjoy these models more I feel!
      The articles I mention are easily available online and I keep them in different folders as as reference for different types of dinosaurs. Get you enjoy them too!

      Thank you Austin! There's really so much to learn about dinosaurs and not enough time. Pachycephalosaurus is interesting because we ironically know less about it than other members that are less well-known. No decent post-cranial remains, for example, AFAIK.

      They have been! And since a lot of reconstruction/ restoration work is pretty subjective, it might not even be an oversight. Different people will have different reasonings, so I am generally not very fussed with it. And yup, Morgan knows what he's talking about!

      I wouldn't mind even seeing other adults, but in different poses to make a herd. Babies would actually be really small and even cuter than this one! But I doubt PNSO will do it unless they can keep the price low. Already plenty of complaints on the price of this small figure. ☹

Both of those have their pluses and faults, and if anyone could marry everything into a balance of scientific accuracy, colour and sculpting detail, it's PNSO! With prehistoric animals , we often underestimate how much soft tissue they had because we are looking at the bones but with the PNSO figure here I wish they had done a tiny bit more skeletal observations to had went to the same conclusions as the person helping out DinoDragons , or just looking at the saurian pachycephalosaurs that has a thick tail I think as they done their research, but I still bought the figure as its the most accurate figure of this species I have ever seen but I just wish that they done more of that research as its a beautiful figure.

      Fortunately, I do believe that this is one mod that many sculptors will do, and it shouldn't cost too much. I know what you mean, when you feel something is perfect except for that one fatal flaw. Luckily for me, I've long since learnt how to actually unsee flaws unless they are really huge! Such as that hideous iToy Carnotaurus... the less said of it the better... 😫😫😖

  • @BananaCake26
    @BananaCake26 3 роки тому

    Wow, that was quick! Another wonderful and informative video! The model is very nice but I wish it were bigger. It would be great if PNSO could do scale lines and stick with them. Tiny species like Microraptor could be 1/6 scale, medium/small dinos like like this Pachycephalosaurus could be 1/18 scale and the bigger ones like Tyrannosaurus 1/35 scale. There would still be a lot of wiggle room because the sizes used to calculate scale for many species are estimates based on a few, often incomplete fossils. Pachycephalosaurus is only known from skulls, so size estimates and body anatomy are far from factual knowledge.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  3 роки тому

      That's actually a very good thought. I hadn't thought of that! Having a few distinct scale lines would allow collectors who like some kind of reference and consistency display like scales together, while allowing companies to still product bigger scales for dinosaurs too small to do in just one scale. I like that idea a lot!

      That's the cool thing about PNSO. Their actual models are so well-painted that even if they don't exactly follow the product images, it's not in a _this is inferior_ way. And that's what makes PNSO pull head of the rest of the pack. Too bad about the Safari, which I think is an excelllent sculpt, but really cannot compare to PNSO paint-wise.

I don't know how the Chinese are able to do such sterling paintjobs and yet keep their prices affordable, but that is one thing that I hope Safari can level up. They have shown in past offerings that they _can_ do it, for example their Postosuchus, Sauropelta and Coelophysis.

  • @powerfulidiot2357

    It seems beautiful, but I personally cannot bear how long the line is for a very wide mouth. Is it scientifically accurate?
    I personally want only beak section of the mouth opens, but recently so many companies produce wide mouth for herbivore dinosaurs like PNSO triceratops and Eofauna triceratops.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  3 роки тому +1

      Which line do you mean? There is a horizontal line across the cheek area but I didn't think that was the margin of the mouth. Generally for ornithischian dinosaurs, how wide the mouth is depends on whether the model makers believe these dinosaurs had cheeks and how much of it, I suppose.
      EoFauna didn't add to much to their Triceratops, but they have always been particular about their scientific accuracy. I would imagine they either believe they didn't have them, or that there is not enough evidence one way or the other so they chose one. Kinda like T Rex and lips, which is always a sensitive topic among dinosaur enthusiasts! 😅

      Yes, you are rephrasing what exactly want to say. Thank you. I just grown up with herbivore dinosaur with cheeks, so when i see herbivore dinosaur without cheek, i just need sometime to get used to it. (Now I love my Eofauna triceratops for how unique it looks!)

      Hahah indeed Antônio I know how you feel about this. But using an estimate of 4.5m, 1:35 would bring this model down to 12cm... that's really small. Even if PNSO could sculpt enough detail to make it interesting, I doubt they could achieve enough colour variations and blends and still keep to the low price for this.

    @darrenhughes3244 2 роки тому

    The paint job is extremely flat compared to the vibrancy and depth of contrast in the prototype images. The head and crown are basically totally different colours - image is rich brown/red and murky green and the product is like a purple and beige, and it's missing the blue accent down from eyes entirely. Disappointing.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому +1

      Yes it commonly happens that there is a fall-off between release image and actual in-hand model. The release images are often prototypes underdoing the kind of paint work that I get only after saving up for months for a commission with Martin Garrattt or Jay Carriere.
