      Someone needs to make these as actual engines in that scale... a 1.5 litre ls v8 would be a great engine conversion for fwd cars and small Japanese kei cars...

  • @MidnightMechanic
    @MidnightMechanic 6 років тому

    A small block Chevy (also known as SBC engine) uses a distributor geared to the camshaft, that also drives the oil pump below. The firing order is also different, 18436572, fired using a distributor cap, rotor, and coil, to send electrical charges to the spark plugs. Modern engines, such as the LS blocks, use a coil on plug design, hence why distributors are phased out. You'll also note the use of a lifter galley on a SBC engine, as the camshaft is placed slightly higher above the crankshaft for the lifters to contact the cam, thus the pushrods are hidden away inside the galley along with the lifters. The galley is hence covered by the intake manifold, and sealed on both sides using gasket maker, and/or a cork gasket.
    One quick way to tell the difference between flat tappet and roller lifters is the use of a lifter retaining bracket "spider", which holds the roller lifters in place to keep the lifter and roller from spinning against the cam's lobe direction. Flat tappets have to rotate to wear evenly, so no lifter retainer bracket is used.

    Also the 90° positioning of the Cylinder helps to cancel most of the vibrations. You can see motorcycles with 90° displacement without additional balancing shafts, but when the go 75 or 60° a balancing shaft with additional weight is required.

    I would love to see the exact same style video explaining a flat crank v8, comparing/contrasting them against a cross-plane crank in more detail. Ive been told that flat plane v8's make less low end torque, but are able to obtain much higher rpm's and hence higher horsepower. Which is subsequently (as I was told) why italian and german supercar companies use(d) them so often.(?)

    Hello, Engineering Explained ~ I've been told the #2 cylinder valve on my V8 is stuck open. It's either the intake valve or exhaust valve. It will cost $6,000 to have a new engine put in. I'm uncomfortable with the unexpected diagnostic stating I need a new engine. In fact, I'm dumbfounded. Watching your video helped me understand how the eight cylinders work.

    Hey Jason, can you make a video about engine knock and how it is prevented? I'm thinking about the effect of different types of engine/intake air cooling, higher octane fuel, compression ratio, etc. This is more or less mentioned in a lot of video's but I couldn't find one that packs it all together. Loving your video's!

    I always had an interest in the balance of an engine. I think it would be interesting to do a video like this on a V6 and also the balance between a 60 deg and 90 deg V6. I know 60 is better for balance while 90 is done so both a 6 and an 8 can come off the same assembly line to lower cost.
