Barbara was born in Guadalajara, Mexico where she studied music, acting, and dance. She graduated from the Universidad de Guadalajara as a music instructor and studied voice. She was the section leader and soloist for the State choir of Jalisco.
Barbara was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma and underwent several rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. During this time Barbara was told that she may never be able to sing again as the radiation could harm her vocal chords. She was in treatment for several years and was near death on more than one occasion, but her faith, family and friends helped her through those difficult times.
After traveling to Houston for a consultation with doctors at MD Anderson, Barbara had a chance to audition for the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston. She was awarded a full scholarship where she completed the Masters Degree program.
Her accomplishments while at UofH include first place winner in NATS competition in 2001 in the advanced adults category. Barbara was a participant in the summer program IIVArts held in Chiari, Italy. She was invited to sing the American and Mexican National Anthems for the sold-out, historic soccer game at Reliant Stadium. Barbara has been part of numerous important events with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Jalisco in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Barbara now makes her home in Texas where she is married and has a beautiful 3 year old daughter. She hopes to continue her singing and acting career and recently auditioned for the show Americas Got Talent.

Wow, her outfit plus her looks, I thought she was a Hollywood A list actress, but once the voice came out, I started picturing her standing in front of those classic stages, and people throwing red roses at her....she is an opera diva!

Even if she lost, she would have so many doors open for her dreams. I just love her, she is a STAR!
She deserves more than winning that contest. She is way too good! She deserves to be performing in the most important theathers around the world, she deserves The Madison Square Garden or The Vaticano, I mean, the whole world must listen this magnificent voice. It must be like hearing an angel singing. Goosebumps again!

Barbara didn't win because she has a talent that alot of other people have. Kevin's talent is very rare. When he sings, it goes straight into your heart and you just can't help but feel the emotion that he brings out in songs. Barbara's singing does give me the chills, but Kevin's singing is so much more captivating. It's no wonder why the judges and most of America preferred him over Barbara.
The woman with this level of talent need't even win this competition! Just show her talent!
She sounds like Maria Callas in her lower vocal registers, and then she sounds like Sarah Brightman when she sings higher. Barbara Padilla has a great future ahead of her!!

I liked both Kevin and Barbara but only one could win the contest, that doesn't mean that the runner-up was any less talented. If you've got what it takes to sell CDs, you'll sell them regardless--all you need is the exposure that a highly-rated show can give you. Kevin & Barbara are 2 completely different singers but both are wonderful and I hope they sell tons of CDs.

Expressiveness is part of singing and requires talent too. Music is more than "beautiful noise", a singer in all genres has to express what he or she sings about. It is especially true for opera arias when the singer is supposed to act roles with the voice. BTW in documentary "The Audition" about finals of a prestigious opera competition - Met Council Auditions - one of the judges said "if they sing well but are boring we are not interested. It's about communication as much as singing".
haters will hate. Kevin is a humble singer.. He has Americans at his back! Its the way he takes everyone breathe away with his humble and genuine country singing. Americans had chose their winner. stop complaining. =P
Kevin Skinner is the man. His music is emotional not just high pitch noises... he deserved to win.
And for those that don't know, The University of Guadalajara is an older university of the Americas since 1792 (when my mother was still in diapers) and one of the most prestigious schools in Mexico, just behind Chilangolandia's UNAM.

Hey, I liked Kevin Skinner at the first adition, but he really stunk in the final. Barbara, on the other hand, shone like a diamond in the sky and she will endure long after Kevin has faded into oblivion. What a beacon of hope to us all.
The people who voted are probably the same people who didn't vote for Adam Lambert...he is a talent who will also go far...

@Lilyroe26 - you're right there, she would be much appreciated in the UK than the US altho Kevin winning the competition opens the door for the less fortunate people to dream again. She looks well to do anyway unlike Kevin, besides with her fantastic voice, she can go places even if she didn't win :)

In these things the best does not guaranty the win. Britain Got Talent was proof of that last year as well. But the second place usually does better in the end. Ask Susan Boyle.

Barbara Padilla is way better than Jackie Evancho but for some reason people think Jackie Evancho's better because shes a kid. Why can't people respect a nice, experienced adult as much as a stupid overly sweet sounding little kid?

@BBBYpsi i listened to him, he does have a very good singing voice but i dont think he started singing opera until a later time in his life, the aria he sang didnt suit his voice but it was ok, i also listened to him singing o holy night, again not bad. I did notice he's singing more commercial songs, so he sould do well, for me i wont go looking or listening to him his voice is a little harsh.
Sounds good, but if I knew what she was singing about then.......I'm just saying..... forget it I speak only English, but she is good, aw... sounds good.

Wake up!! Obama is president of USA. Barbara, please come to England! There are lots of high profile people who will pay a lot to hear YOU sing. Remind your agent. The Royal Variety Performance in front of royalties is NOT out of reach for someone so pretty, and with a voice like yours.

Barbara. God has plan for everyone and he has a better plan for you. Your appearance in AGT is just to tell the world there is a GREAT lady called barbara who can really sing. Please forgive the voters because most of them don't know how to appreciate real music. They grow up listening to Pop,Country etc. only. YOU ARE ACTUALLY THE REAL WINNER IN THIS CONTEST. I am pretty sure you will have a bright future. Please don't give up because chances are waiting for you.
There are times when one wishes there was no winner. Both Skinner and Barbara are beyond contests of any sort, having everything a real performer needs to have. So I consider WE were the real winners after watching and listening to them. Thanks to both.
in my opinion i think she should of won. i know kevin and barbra sing two different styles but barbra has an amazing voice. kevin has an ok voice to me.
Some of the comments here seem to express bitterness that she did not "win" AGT. I do not share that sentiment. She is more beautiful in many ways that words cannot express. She will have a brilliant career in music and I wish her all the beautiful blessings that can possibly come to her.

You forgot to mention her WIDE vocal range...her rendition of "Ave Maria" in the semifinal round left me completely stunned!! Especially when she hit that high B#/Cb note towards the end of that aria. What a vocal powerhouse!!
I think Barbara is going to become very famous...like Sarah Brightman, Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli, Paul Potts, and Charlotte Church.
Some people see racism everywhere. Have you thought for a moment that people didn't like her voice or her huge vibrato? Or don't like operatic soprano sound in general? Or they (people and producers) didn't want an "opera singer" to win that year? Or they viewed her as "professional"?

I'm sorry, are you saying Maria Callas was not also created by God? And, by the way, Callas was already a vocally gifted and technically impeccable before Onassis entered her life. You are sorely misinformed.
Amen. Barbara really should have won. There are far more people that could sing country as well as or better than Kevin, and far less that could sing opera like Barbara. So much for a TALENT competition.

Im from Tennessee and I don't think ANYONE was as pissed off as I was when Kevin Skinner won. I don't CARE if he is southern, or if he is a country musician, HE SUCKS AND THIS SHOW IS ABOUT TALENT GOD! I broke our TV remote when I flung it against the wall when he won, I WAS SOOOO PISSED AND I STILL AM!! People don't realize that when they pick up the phone and dial they are changing people's lives. Give the million to someone who deserves it... and not spend it on a chicken farm... poor barbera

@lpcsteve Actually i have listened to Rydian & very familar. Danni did not like him & ended up with him. How ironic. Yes he was extremly good. I liked his phantom of the opera the best. Been a couple of years since I seen him do anything. UA-cam brings alot of talented people to the public eye where you can see/hear real talent. Not the propaganda thing.

I cannot fathom why America chose the chicken catcher from Kentucky over this magnificent woman. Kevin can have the $1M and the American audience...Barbara will be traveling all over the world and making millions of dollars with this angelic voice.
No, I think that many Americans DO value opera...she won over EVERYONE except Kevin Skinner. I was one of the many people that voted for her. I am almost absolutely certain that we haven't seen the last of her.
I wanted Barbara to sing "Nessun Dorma" for this final performance. It's one of my favorite arias and one of the most beloved arias ever. If she would have sang it she would have won this competition, it never fails to impress.
@lpcsteve you do realize his voice got severly damaged his vocal chords were severed when hit by a car while riding a bike in europe. He was told he would never even talk again.

Look Sharon said it, we all know Kevin doesn't have the greatest voice! but like Johnny cash his voice has soul, hurt, truth! You can feel the anguish, love, struggle, and hope literally flow through that unpolished raw voice. He wasn't meant to be a falsetto singer or a virtuoso, NO, the man was meant to inspire a nation of unemployed struggling lower class families who have nothing but their hope, dreams, and the loved ones that still believe in them! His talent is moving a nation not singing!
