- Un bel di from Madame Butterfly. Guest soprano Barbara Padilla appears with the Heartland Festival Orchestra and Artistic Director David Commanday. August 27th, 2010
Un bel di, vedremo -- One fine day you shall see
Un bel dì, vedremo
Levarsi un fil di fumo
Sull'estremo confin del mare
E poi la nave appare
E poi la nave è bianca.
Entra nel porto, romba il suo saluto.
Vedi? È venuto!
Io non gli scendo incontro, io no.
Mi metto là sul ciglio del colle
E aspetto gran tempo
e non mi pesa a lunga attesa.
E uscito dalla folla cittadina
Un uomo, un picciol punto
S'avvia per la collina.
Chi sarà? Chi sarà?
E come sarà giunto
Che dirà? Che dirà?
Chiamerà Butterfly dalla lontana
Io senza far risposta
Me ne starò nascosta
Un po' per celia,
Un po' per non morire
Al primo incontro,
Ed egli al quanto in pena
Chiamerà, chiamerà :
"Piccina - mogliettina
English Translation
One fine day, we will see
Arising a strand of smoke
Over the far horizon on the sea
And then the ship appears
And then the ship is white
It enters into port, rumbles its salute
Do you see it? He is coming!
I don't go down to meet him, not I.
I stay upon the edge of the hill
And I wait a long time
but I do not grow weary of the long wait
And leaving from the crowded city,
A man, a little speck
Climbing the hill.
Who is it? Who is it?
And when he arrives
What will he say? What will he say?
He will call Butterfly from a distance
I without answering
Stay hidden
A little to tease him,
A little so as not to die.
At the first meeting,
And then a little troubled
He will call, he will call
"Little one, dear wife
Orange-Blossom"
The names he gave me at his last visit.
All this will happen,
I promise you this
Hold back your fears -
I wait for him with certain faith.
OMG. Besides the version by Anna Netrobko, this is the other version I like most.
Absolutely wonderful and beautiful Barbara!
I could listen to Ms Padilla for hours.
Canta com a alma...
EPIC PERFORMANCE
Excelente interpretacion, impresionado por el sentimiento transmitido.

Extremely moving. Beautiful!
No flaws
@rabbitfoxlion No offence, but you cannot possibly have heard a REAL opera singer. Sarah Brightman is NOT an opera singer. She is a musical singer and ALWAYS sing with a microphone. REAL operasingers do not. Barbara is a good singer, but her technique is somewhat not quite there yet, neither the Puccinian interpretation. If you want to hear real power, try Ghena Dimitrova singing "In questa reggia". That is sung with full power over an enormous orchestra at Arena di Verona without a microphone.
Time will tell who is the TRUE winner of AGT 2009. And I'm confident that it's Barbara Padilla!
I love this piece from Madame Butterfly. Barbara show exceptional command of this piece emotionally and vocally.
I love her voice and emotions, she is an accomplished artist! God bless her! :))
@jewelmarkess Well, yeah, I KNOW that Sarah is actually a classical-crossover singer. But the way she sang Nessun Dorma...WOW!!! She almost made me believe for a few minutes that she was actually an opera singer!!
I love her facial expressions, they tell the full story of the song. Her face is a canvass for emotions, and she paints beautifully with her voice and face.
I LOVE it at the very end, when she extends her arms out towards the sky. Like Wonderwoman, LOL.
@Salomes7Veils I am glad that I don't have any musical traiining and enjoyed this without having detected those deficient nuances.
Brava.
@rabbitfoxlion LOL Never heard Tebaldi I guess.
very impressed with her voice & orchestra very well done by all.
just enough flaws to make her so lovable
@rabbitfoxlion Barbara has a beautiful lyric soprano voice, but if you think it's the most powerful you haven't heard too many real opera singers. For example, all opera singers sing without microphones when they perform in operas in opera theaters, and you hear their voices soar above the orchestra even when they sing softly. There are also different types of soprano voice. Barbara is a lyric soprano, but dramatic sopranos have stronger voices. Try Jessye Norman for example.
@zucchini2007 I don't think you can compare her to Sarah Brightman, it's a different level entirely. Sarah Brightman is a crossover/musical theater singer - a great Cristina but pitiful in opera arias. Barbara is an opera singer and yes she could definitely sing it on stage.
no maam..not for her voice
@michael48joey She's certainly much better than Sarah Brightman! She could sing her right off the stage!
I have heard so many versions now - so many top world-famous singers performing "un bel di vedremo" - and in Germany I never heard about Padilla.
- then I klicked Musetta's Waltz - once again it was one of the best I heared. It is entertaining, nice to watch her face and the climax of puccinis music ist totally full of voice - amazing.
Maybe there is sometimes "to much" - but this does not matter.
This woman deserves to be an international accepted operastar - even comming just from AGT
Well.... Trust me. Be forever happy about it. It's a curse. It is impossible for me to listen to music without hearing every little thing. You would not like it...
The thing about classical music - both instrumental and vocal - is that it's been performed so many times by so many great singers past and present that standards are very high. Then there is competition: less than 1% maybe less than 1/1000 of classical voice graduates - most of whom would sound fantastic to you - even manage to make a living. Those little flaws in technique or interpretation can make a difference between working and unemployment. Or even stardom and unemployment.
This comment was really interesting to read...it is a reality.
Bárbera is a wonderful artist. Though. I think this is not the strongest performance of Padilla. But honestly, the orchestra Is really not helping at all.
A this makes no sense, the comment was mend for an other song "Un bel di"
Beautiful x
