Someone said to me once that you might think you're being polite when you deflect a compliment, but you're actually telling the person who complimented you that they are wrong. It made accepting compliments with a simple thank you a bit easier for me.

I feel like your point on “enjoy being young and hot” actually always applies. A person can be hot at any age; it’s just a matter of confidence, self-understanding and appreciation and care for oneself. Dressing well and living a purposeful life never ages and it really shows! I know so many beautiful women of all ages, from 18 to 80, really.

I like your point on comfy clothes. For me, comfort is the most important thing but it is possible to be comfy AND stylish. With a long flowy dress, or bootcut / flared leg jeans, a cute sweater, nice sneakers or flat shoes... I have found out that having clothes on the right size plays a big role. I never wear super tight clothes anymore and it is a game changer !

Quality fabric is huge too. A basic tee in polyester feels worse imo than the same exact cut/size in cotton (or other natural fibers). Plus polyester holds onto stink so much more, so you feel less put together even if it looks fine.

For sure, I think it's a balance cause there are people out there that will make the comments about leggings or whatever else and it's like okay but are you never going to wear smart, dressy or even just normal clothing again? It's just leggings until you go to a wedding and have to wear a dress? If you start living like that it'll get even harder when that wedding comes to let GO of the leggings! I won't keep anything that's uncomfortable, if shoes hurt me or a dress or jeans or something really are that hard to get on and too tight then they're going, but I will still wear tight jeans and certain heels or wedges that are like, sure they aren't the epitome of comfort but they are situation and style appropriate and they're not hurting me so they're comfortable enough

You inspire me to be a better mom. I’m having a little girl and while I’m pregnant right now it’s hard sometimes to feel good and normal when my body is changing and I’m tired. But I think my positivity now will affect her and if I want to be a mom who raises a confident daughter I really need to be confident and grateful now, so I can have even more experience with it myself to someday teach her in a few years when she is a child who starts developing her own self-image. Confidence is generational and part of the legacy of beauty you pass to others, when it’s genuine and comes from the inside out. Thank you for all you do! When you look in the mirror and pick out every little thing you consider a flaw, and think negative, mean things about yourself, that's internalized misogyny and toxic beauty standards speaking. They were designed to make you feel unworthy no matter what you look like so that you buy more products that promise to "fix" you (but of course, the system wants you to always feel like you're not good enough for that sweet customer retention). On top of that, society wants you preoccupied with your appearance because otherwise you might start paying more attention to what's really wrong with the world. It's not a coincidence that most of us have a lot of self-hatred to deprogram.

Gosh I needed this video. I was about to go to the shops and just throw on an old hoodie and some leggings. I work a corporate job during the week and I am very much all or nothing. And I feel like on my days off I just look like a slob and I feel terrible. I get so anxious about potentially running into people when I don't look put together, but I also don't put together comfortable and cute outfits. I think the point she was trying to make is slightly different. I can speak from experience here; I had 3 years where I was 40lbs lighter and by all intents and purposes regular build, and then wound up regaining it all very fast, which did a number on my self esteem. But. When I regained the weight I had thought I was so much happier when I was smaller? I wasn’t. I still disliked how I looked and felt self-conscious and ugly. And to be honest? Weight changes some things, but it doesn’t change the shape of your face that much, or your body that much. If you think your limbs are too short, they’re still gonna be short if you’re thin. If you don’t like how your face looks? It’s still going to look like your face, but thinner. Weight can help with some things, but losing weight won’t magically change you into another person. So if you don’t like yourself, weight might not change that.

    • @deniz_koz
      @deniz_koz 3 місяці тому

@@autumnhobbit I see your points. I think it all depends your body type (yet again) and especially the distribution of weight gained. Your body's tendency. In my case it makes a huge difference, and yes even for my face. Maybe it is also about the way you like to dress. For example I love using belts, tucking in, thin fabrics. In my case it is not easy to dress the way I want if I gain weight. Unfortunately I am not that brave, not at all. I spent lots of time searching for a way to feel stylish. Sometimes I managed. But it took a lot of effort and time. I wish I had used that resources to lose weight. And again I wish with all my heart that I didn't feel that way. But of course, this is only my experience. It might be only about me. But I sense it is not.

Totally agree with hair. ANd whilst yes, there are some people that can pull off a relaxed, undone hairstyle, it does not work for me. It immediately ruins any effort I might have put into make up and clothes and makes me look messy. But if my hair is nice and shiny I can get away with little make up and even more casual clothes and still look put together. I have straight fine hair, but apparently a lot of it, so it gets tangled and messy very easily and just clashes with the style I want to emulate.

As a ladydressmaker i soon recognized that kibbe does not include a lot of womens bodies, but thanks to you i learned to change my point of view. thank you so much!

Great video. I was actually typed by you and found out I’m a soft gamine. A lot of people hate on kibbe but I think having some sense of how the world sees me in a more objective way, as well as relating to iconic people who look like me like Reese Witherspoon or Winona Ryder has helped me come to terms with how I look. I now see myself in a much better light, where I used to struggle a lot with my appearance, I now have a better sense of what clothes make me feel good and I accept my face. Thanks girl!!! I get what you do and why you do it. You make a difference.

As a 37 y.o woman i am perhaps not the target audience for this video haha. But no. 4 resonates so much with me! Back in my early 20s in college, before any party/ fancy outing my friends and i would do an hour long telephone session deciding what we would wear 😂 sadly though the typical 2000s "party outfits" were the ABSOLUTE WORST for my Soft Classic body type! And i would end up in some trendy embellished low-rise jeans with a chunky belt and butterfly top or something and then wonder why i looked so weird....
I actually started having my own sense of "style" in my mid/ late 20s. And embracing that has made a world of difference! So who cares if am the only one in a dress sometimes 😁

I love most of these. I plan all my outfits ahead. I buy very few pieces and only those I really love. And I recently updated my hair and started investing more time/energy/money into it - which has really tied my look together. However, I don't know that style and comfort really have to trade off. It depends on your personal style! I do have my "house only" ultra cozy clothes. And my work clothes are definitely less comfortable than my WFH clothes. But my daily drivers (WFH, errands, farmers markets, museums, etc) are maxi skirts, oversized button downs, combat boots, and boho dresses. They are all so comfy. I've literally hiked in most of them at some point or another (I have a very hard time passing up a good trail when I see one...) And they all mesh perfectly with my style!

Of course! That piece of advice is for people who only wear leggings, sweatpants and hoodies everywhere and want to feel more stylish - people in this mindset would see those items you mention as uncomfortable. This is what I meant by sacrificing the comfort just a tiny bit - even if it's the comfort of not thinking about what you have to wear today that can be a hurdle to get over for some. It sounds like you have a great sense of style!

I want to add to #12 cause I have a mother that will not let me live down any item that shes ever given me!!! She asked me 2 days ago why I never wore the top she got me 15 years ago when I was like 17. I would probably ask someone that too but she asks me a couple times a year. I told her a store I liked at the time and so she got me something there that I honestly could not figure out how to wear cause it just wasnt my style (which mustve been hard to find cause I love almost everything at that store) but I wore it once to make her happy and had to get rid of it when decluttering. Hhhhhhhh.
Just wanted to add that sometimes they will care. They will press you. And you should still get rid of it and do what you need to do regardless of their nagging. 🤷‍♀️

Yes, yes, yes to all of this! Especially that thumbnail: dresses 👏are 👏literally 👏more 👏comfortable 👏than 👏leggings!! Even if you think dresses aren't your style, there are dresses for _literally_ every style root/aesthetic. In summer, they're more breathable and cool, and in winter, they're easier to wear something like fleece leggings under! Just get ones that look like sheer nylons. I used to be a leggings/jeans/hoodies girl, and now I cannot rave enough about dresses and skirts. I know some women "get the ick" from dresses because they feel like they're not feminist enough or something, but you are seriously giving up _the most comfortable thing you could wear_ because you're associating it with a period in time and politics that it is not inherently tied to.

    • @ScribeGirl10

@@ScribeGirl10 - Equality, definitely! What I meant is the modern radical version of feminism that actively hates men, enough that they purposefully wear anything that they think men will dislike.
It’s a thing, unfortunately. 🤷🏻‍♀️ And because it’s well-known that most men love women in dresses, those women wear them.

If you think you are ugly simply because of minor asymmetries its quite the opposite! Do yourself a favor and look at pictures online of celebs you feel are the most beautiful. (I know. This is a vain start) Now inspect their faces for asymmetry. One high eyebrow. One big eye. One sided smile. Gummy smile. Tiny teeth. Big forhead. Things like that. Rihanna has a big forhead. Without it she would literally not be as beautiful to the eye. People with 2 different eyebrows look so beautiful to most people. This is hard to accept. We still want to think "no my flaws are more ugly" but Ellie-Jean here just pointed out so many things she thinks are flaws that are literally the reasons she is fun to look at lol. ❤

I would add one thing - if you want to experiment with hair colour - go red, go black, go pink or whatever - do it now. As you get older, it's harder - you might have a more responsible job, etc, and you have to tone it down, and then once you pass 40-ish, it can look harsh. I'm glad I had my pink hair, purple hair and green hair in my 20s.

Somehow the acceptance of my appearance and the ability to care less about people's opinion and dress for my taste just switched on once I turned 30. Idk if it's just me 😅 I'm now much more stylish, while still being on a modesty journey and choosing to love my body more and enhance it more while showing it less. It seemed impossible in my 20s...and yet 😊

Ellie, I have a super specific question. I have identified 1 (one!) style of sweater that actually works on me despite weight fluctuations...longish, asymmetrical hem, cinchable waist. Somehow found one ten years ago on Etsy and have never found another like it (the shop went out of business). What do I do???? Shell out for someone to replicate it by hand? There are actually so many options other than sweatpants it you want to dress comfy. On the days I work more about 8 hours I usually chose trousers with more flowy or stretchy fabric for wich I don't need a belt. There's a great deal of stretchy suit pants or flowy trousers or more mature and classy cargo style pants. I also like to go with sweaters that are either a bit tighter or otherwise have a more mature or classy shape. Though that's all word clothes of course. My freetime style is sometimes quite edgy
