I remember, in an interview, John Lennon saying, paraphrasing, when a Beatles member wrote a song and presented it to the group, it became a Beatles song, not their song, and it could turn out totally different once everyone had their say.
I have forgotten how much I like this song! And now that I'm older, I'm astonished to see in how many different ways it really seems before its time. What a great song.
Ringo was playing so free and with blasting energy-nothing held back and yet still not stepping all over the song. This song is a euphoric performance and just shows the breadth of the Beatles range.I have been hoping you'd react to this song for months now. Thanks.
I've always happened to think this song is GREAT! Really great. Profound. And yes, utterly trippy: we go up; we peak; we come down. Ouch. The fact that you can spot adulterated versions of old Beatles songs is a sign that your ear is catching on, Lee. I've always loved this song. The fact that it was relegated to the 'Yellow Submarine' album was a crime, and an insult to George. Peak psychedelia from The Beatles. One of my all time favourites! Blew my head off when I went to see the film (with my kid sister). The Yellow Submarine soundtrack is severely underrated, unsurprisingly, since it's only half an album... (Bit late to this one - life got in the way)

As a drummer myself (still have and use the kit in my avatar from 1972), I always loved this song and the way they added the beats to this song. It's incredible that this song got passed over in 1967-it could have been put (maybe) on Sgt. Pepper, or the Magical Mystery Tour LP which followed in that same year. But this was the fate of many of George Harrison's songs-often overlooked by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, who were the dominant songwriters in the group. It's buried on this "odds and ends" album "Yellow Submarine", which is a real shame. It's a great song. The feedback at the beginning is really startling, to say the least, especially for its time. Thanks for doing this reaction; I'm really looking forward to watching this one!
Great deep track for them with George piloting this psychedelic classic. You don't see this reacted to much, nice job! Beatles are always #1, more Beatles please, enjoy. 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎸🎤🎹🎶🔥
The full version of this is over eight minutes, it's never been released so far but it's been available on bootlegs for a long time. The released version is over six minutes and in the film it's less than two and a half. The track was mostly produced by The Beatles themselves, George Martin was only there addition of the trumpets and clarinets, but George was generally credited as the producer on everything The Beatles did including the tiny number he didn't produce, for instance there was a couple of tracks on the white album that were recorded when he was on holiday and produced by Chris Thomas.
Yes! It does remind me of Tomorrow never knows and a bit like Northern Song too. And yes I adore Ringo and everything he does. Whee! And I love your smile when you are hearing them.
I so much appreciate your expanding on the psychedelic nature and sensibility of the song and the Beatles in this and other periods. I, like you, feel that the psychedelic experience is essential to the human experience. My heart goes out to people who deny themselves this avenue for growth. A single experience can stay with you for your lifetime, and I believe in a very positive way. It must be done with reverence, and with resolve. I respect the fact that you say what you actually think. I feel validated for following you.
Loved your reaction, Leigh. As a 72-year-old lifetime Beatle fan, I learned so much more about the song tonight from you. And I hadn't heard it since the mix had been upgraded by Giles Martin. What a delightful experience! 😁
Very nice! "Praise from many other commentators" - and now we can add @L33 Reacts to that. Also, at 13:37 you said, "It did mimic a hallucinogenic experience very well. I've had a couple myself - I'm not gonna lie." LMAO! Yeah, that's no surprise to those of us who watched your reaction to "A Day In The Life" oh-so long ago! LOL! Well done, my man, well done.
I’m glad some of y’all stuck around after I got my feet wet! It took me a bit but I’m starting to get there lol. 😂 thank you for the kind words, my friend.
George came to San Francisco hoping to see the psychedelic hippie experience at its origin. But, by the time he got there, the original hippies had all left and the area had been gone to homeless teenyboppers who came to find the same thing. Heroin had come into the scene by that point. The Haight Ashbury community had a funeral for the death of the hippie in January of 1967 so by the time the "Summer of Love" arrived, they were mostly gone. That's what George found and it freaked him out. It caused him to swear off acid.
Nice pick - thanks! I saw Yellow Submarine at the theatre a couple of years ago, and that night had a wonderfully colorful dream! I guess our dreams reflect what we feed in.
Definitely one of the most underrated Beatles tracks. Back in 1985 a fellow band mate of mine used to lay shit on The Beatles. Of course he put down all the early stuff. So one day I sat down and played him It's all too much. Oh got home stoned first, dropped the needle on the record and hey presto he changed his attitude Instantly. He went out and brought the collection over time.
The band, WILCO, *brilliantly* turned that organ line into the main guitar riff for their song, "I Got You (At the End of the Century)". ;-) - on their album, "Being There".
"With your long blonde hair and your eyes of blue", heard a couple of times before the fade, was a line from 'Sorrow' by the Pretty Things, I believe, which also appears on Bowie's 'Pinups' album. Love the feedback off the top and the overall vibe and sentiments. Very much an artifact of its time. Worthy of repeated listenings. 'All You Need Is Love' should absolutely be the original worldwide broadcast version. Anything else from this soundtrack I'd opt for a clip from the movie itself. Definitely watch the movie too. I recall playing 'Lucy In the Sky...' for my kids in the mid-90s shortly after they'd seen the VHS and looked up to see my son enacting the movements from the animation. Enjoy. ✌🏼😊🎶❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊
After watching the wonderful mind melting film that is Yellow Submarine, you get this George penned masterpiece as the crescendo at the end.... the happy ending.....the perfect cherry on top.
This was about the time that George rose to the level of John and Paul. They wouldn't accept it, but it was true. What a composition this is! Amazing! Be sure to check out "Hey Bulldog", my favorite Beatles rocker, off the same album.
George's under utilisation is definitely one of the issues that led to the split. That is very evident when he poured all his pent up songs into All Things Must Pass. They were just too great to contain all that talent without something eventually giving. As for acid, those were the days!
This is one of my favorite George songs. I particularly like the way he manipulates the feedback from his guitar the entire time. This was no doubt an inspiration courtesy of Hendrix. The line that always stands out to me is, "All the world is a birthday cake, so take a piece but not too much." I also find the slight twist of the lyrics amusing when they seem to be chanting, "much too much", as the song slowly fades out. I believe the version on the Yellow Submarine remix (1999) is better, which includes significantly enhanced audio features. Specifically, the heavy guitar work throughout the song seems to be amplified and takes on more of a groaning feel to it. Most other songs on the CD are more enjoyable as well.
George has said he didn't play the guitar lead or feedback part on this one. He was playing organ. It was John or Paul, and considering John didn't really play bass, seems it may have been John.
@lauraallen55 That really surprises the heck out of me. Where did you read/hear this? I always assumed that with all those layers of what is at least two guitars that George was surely one of them. Aside from that, John is not typically known for playing lead extensively. To be sure, I checked with Wikipedia and it notes that both George and John played the lead for this song. I have yet to check any of the books from my Beatles library to confirm if the lineup was one way or the other, but I'd still like to know your source. 😁
@@tdgallagher218 I read it in an interview, and am so sorry but can't remember where it was. It was George himself who said it though, or at least was quoted as saying it. It was a Q&A type of thing. I will look for it later on though and come back to let you know if I find it! No, John did not play lead often. He played lead on the solo of a recent song that Lee reacted to. He asked not to be filmed doing it too. He usually didn't like being filmed playing lead. Oh, it was You Can't Do That. He may not have played lead often, but he could do it well when he wanted to. He also did on Get Back, For You Blue, Long Tall Sally, Revolution, and some others. He played the only guitar on Julia (fittingly). He truly could play well, but didn't usually do so because it was generally George to do that. George was on organ for this one. It kind of makes sense he did here due to the feedback sound he discovered for I Feel Fine (that Paul played, I think).
Incredible tune. Just… amazing. Hey brother- just wanna give one heads up to ya: so back in the hippie days, in San Francisco, THE PLACE to be/visit, etc. was a section of town called “Height-Ashbury,” & I noticed you mentioned it in this video as you were reading about this tune. Just wanted to mentioned 2 things- you would’ve loved Height-Ash ury(2. Street names) and also, Height is pronounced “hate.” I know, I know, it’s such a tiny little nothing thing, but if YOU are taking the time for US(me on my couch), the least I can do is give you a heads up now & again cause I’m thinking you’d appreciate it. Thx for all you do Lee. You are truly a special dude. An honor to have found you my man. Seriously.✌️😎🎸🎹🥁
Hilarious! Thx Laura for correcting ME on the proper spelling for Haight! So funny- I correct Lee in pronunciation & you correct me on spelling. Can’t make this stuff up. Thx & Peace & blessings,
After they finished recording the very production driven Sgt Pepper's album the Beatles were worried that they had lost their live playing chops so during May 1967 they played live in the studio to try and get their live performance chops back together; ultimately resulting in the Let It Be project. One evening they continued jamming until 2am the next morning, the Abbey Road staff had long gone home and left them the keys to lock up the studio. It's All Too Much is the only track that has been released from this in-studio jamming period. With the great English line, "show me that I am everywhere, but get me home for tea." Great reaction as ever Mr Magic Music Ears ;)
5:15 One of my favourite examples of production/mixing (unfortunately you were talking over it). As the horns fade out there's a seamless blend with a guitar feeding back on the same note. For me it's on a par with the famous chicken/guitar ending between Good Morning and the Sgt. Pepper reprise on Sgt. Pepper...
The "Yellow Submarine" is a hoot. Full of puns, a Sea of Puns. "I have a hole in me pocket." or "Are you Bluish? You don't look Bluish." The artwork is amazing. It is totally trippy.
Oh dude!! You should gather the fam together and watch the Yellow Sub movie sometime. It's a masterpiece for young and old alike. Your beatles reactions are so fucking good. I grew up with them and was of the age to take psychedelics along with them. They go hand in hand. Back around 1972 or so, the big Lowes downtown movie theater in Houston ran all 4 Beatles flicks back to back , beginning at midnight, and culminating with Let It Be (which had just been released). 3 of my good buddies and I dropped acid after "Help" and started peaking about 1/2 way through Yellow Submarine. It was my first time seeing Yellow Sub. A memory that will hopefully never fade

They honestly make me smile more then any other band on here (off the top of my head but if I thought about it I doubt it would change lol)
One of the best most underwater tracks by the Beatles. Should have been on Magical Mystery Tour but the boys didn't respect George
Definitely very underrated song.
wow its wonderful, great reaction
From REVOLVER try listening to the track 'For No One'
I guess our dreams reflect what we feed in.
what’s goes in is what comes out! It applies on so many levels lol 😆
Everybody's Got Something to Hide, Except for Me and my Monkey!
C'mon it's such a joy!
My favorite cover of a Beatle song is Fats Domino's cover of EGSTHEFMAMM.
That two-second guitar riff (4.19-4.21) ... oh my word!
The first version of "Sorrow" was by the McCoys, Rick Derringer's old band.
@debjorgo yep. Thanks for the info. The Merseys covered, and had a UK hit with it in '66.
Love that song.
After watching the wonderful mind melting film that is Yellow Submarine, you get this George penned masterpiece as the crescendo at the end.... the happy ending.....the perfect cherry on top.
I got a hole in me pocket.
My daughter loved Yellow Submarine when she was a little girl, still does it's one of her core memories 5 - 6 years old at the time 🍻
This was about the time that George rose to the level of John and Paul. They wouldn't accept it, but it was true. What a composition this is! Amazing! Be sure to check out "Hey Bulldog", my favorite Beatles rocker, off the same album.
Coolest song from yellow submarine. Love George's gorgeous psychedelic guitar.
A song I never has heard, a good song.
George's under utilisation is definitely one of the issues that led to the split. That is very evident when he poured all his pent up songs into All Things Must Pass. They were just too great to contain all that talent without something eventually giving. As for acid, those were the days!
Yeah he was totally under utilized. But still, it blows my mind how much talent was amongst the four. It’s incredible.
The first time I tripped on mescaline I played this song. I imagined myself as being a tree with both my hands being leaves.😂
Best song on yellow submarine imo
Played at the end of Yellow Submarine movie. Love it! You need to watch it with your kids.
I always say it wrong for some reason. My apologies lol
It's spelled 'Haight' by the way. ;)
Hilarious! Thx Laura for correcting ME on the proper spelling for Haight! So funny- I correct Lee in pronunciation & you correct me on spelling. Can’t make this stuff up. Thx & Peace & blessings,
The irony definitely wasn’t lost on me. 😂
@@marcdaviddecker The irony wasn't lost on me lol! :)
As kids, we used to chant "We all live in a Yellow Submarine, a bubble gum machine, a rotten tangerine" on the bus each day!
Your kids will love the movie!
Pepper...
Really interesting track, cheers to you
Amazing piece, there is also a wonderful cover of this piece, by the Flaming Lips, I recommend it. ❤️🤘🇮🇹
George ❤
Wow! It must be at least 50 years since I´ve heard this song. It´s great, love it!
Isn’t it great?? Such a solid Beatles trip. I loved it
The "Yellow Submarine" is a hoot.
