It wasn’t the best Red Dwarf to be fair, but lessons were learnt and Red Dwarf 10 was back to classic. I guess after a long hiatus, you need a trial before you can hit the spot.
I don’t agree that it was in the same universe as Doctor Who, because the rules for time travel were much stricter, but Crime Traveller deserved a much longer run than it got. I think Anthony Horowitz found constructing those time travel plots really hard work. In fairness, it was so tightly plotted it bordered on genius.
It truly is delightful to witness the monumental effort that has gone in to making the most unburdened member of the red dwarf crew feel less and less burdened as the series went on. I'm not even attached to your pointy head Robert, they could have just painted you blue and given you henry hoover arms and you would have still knocked it out of the park. That's a baseketball metaphor by the way ;)
0:42 This is one of the reasons I still have the original DVDs of I-VIII as they're featured in this special. Haven't bothered getting the I-VIII Blu-ray boxset. Sometimes wish Doctor Who could do something like this as there's been so many DVDs and Blu-rays released over the years between classic and new series.
It's just a big call back to "Back to Reality", they did exactly the same bait and switch "none of it was ever real" back then, half thinking that it might be the end of the show forever, and it was honestly one of the best if not the best of the entire show, so I can completely understand why they wanted the big comeback to be "of course it was all real, it's actually you who are fake, stupid" joke lobbed in the direction of the fanbase :) The only difference back then is that the original limit of half hour self contained episodes means that you are getting sucker punched with gags and one liners one after the other, without being allowed the opportunity to stop and think about it all, while splitting the story over 3 episodes tends to water it down. It's the exact same problem they had with "Back in the Red". It would have been perfectly fine, but the pacing was too slow in comparison to all the previous episodes, so it just didn't punch as hard and fast.
17:56 I definitely prefer the longer pencil shape. The shorter version looks horrible. Like a space shuttle or probe, instead of a large mining ship fifteen miles long.
It doesn't matter what they do now.. It will not be as good as it was back in the day. Because everything was better back in the day. The Old series is eclectic and of it's time.. Some would say Classic.. This is not that.
I didn't like this special but your comment is so inteletually lazy. It's not that everything was better than and it's all bad now it's just that this special was a fundamentally bad idea. They redid the plot of Back to Reality but 3 times longer. It's obvious rhat they had no idea wht to do with all that screentime and putting the boys from the Dwarf into present day Earth with no other gimmicks just doesn't work, especially if that world also has Red Dwarf as the show. Seasons 10, 11, and 12 all had really nsolid episodes and Promised Land is really funny and entertaining despite the length. This project was just a bad idea executed badly
Back to Earth was mediocre at best. They leaned a little too hard into the Blade Runner satire imho. The cast did a great job as always, and the characters felt perfectly in character. The whole premise and setup just felt "off" and "weird" even for Dwarf.
You know, I haven't seen Back to Earth but as soon as I heard the premise I thought of Apocalypse immediately! Think I'll steer clear, I still want the boys to end up back on earth (in the context of the story) personally! Wonderful show but this seems like a bit of a dud to me
"What's the worst part that could happen to the audience?" - turn it into a slapstick EastEnders episode with a bad Blade Runner schtick. Worst Dwarf ever.
Truly awful… take a Sci Fi comedy, remove the Sci Fi and the comedy and replace it with 21st century references and product placement that were outdated by the time it aired. Yuk. The cast must have been desperate for the cash.
This was an anniversary special, and was very nearly an out-of-universe behind-the-scenes, one off 30 min show, so it's quite uncharitable to be too hard on it. If that had happened it may have just been aired once and the show probably wouldn't have been resurrected.
I think he did really good in the first two eps of season vii. The rest of vii was hit n miss. Viii had some funny lines here n there but plot was a mess. All the later ones are pretty bad, with the exception of 2 episodes from xi that made me actually laugh 😅

I'm surprized Chloe Annett never got dragged into Dr. Who in someway...
blame moffat
She did Crime Traveller, which as far as I'm concerned is in the same universe.

Trouble is they did this switcheroo before back in season 5 so I was already suspect.
Wasn’t a fan of this special. Just weird. I mean, they end up in coronation street? What the heck is that all about for starters?
Well partly due to Craig Charles doing Corrie at the time of this Red Dwarf special.
Dave is owned by bbc and itv I believe, so made kind of sense. With CC being in corrie

Kryten doing a Sideshow Bob there...just missing the wince!

it was pretty bad, the whole bladerunner thing was cringe
SMEG !
Is that Higgins?!?
Yeah it is. I only just realised too.
seen
Fascinating. Clearly a long time ago. They spoke about a ^massive^ hard drive of 24 Tb. And here I am with the same storage on my below par PC,😂
24tb is still pretty huge. And if its SSD you are looking at over a grand costs
May be 'below par' in computational power, but 24 TB of storage is pretty enormous.
That's hysterical!! Who'd have thought: hard drives getting bigger?!?!
I remember watching this and hating it
I don't think Chloe was ever excepted I preferred the old kachanski tbh
Annett is far better than the wooden Grogan, who the cast hated anyway.

46:30 Alternate River Song.
Worst series of Red Dwarf ever..... A complete load of bollocks....
not my fav sorry. old and new is best to me.

Worst cross over multiverse ever!
Craig bumps into Craig on coronation street?!?
What were they thinking.
I love Red Dwarf but Doug just ripped off the League of Gentlemen. And made this much. Less. Funny
You know, I haven't seen Back to Earth but as soon as I heard the premise I thought of Apocalypse immediately!

Wonderful show but this seems like a bit of a dud to me
Back to Earth wasn't great and it was a sign that Red Dwarf had ran out of ideas and it wasn't funny without a laughter track.
It never had a laugh track, it was filmed in front of a live audience.
"What's the worst part that could happen to the audience?" - turn it into a slapstick EastEnders episode with a bad Blade Runner schtick. Worst Dwarf ever.
It's all been pretty awful after series 6.
@@slaxxxer in your opinion.
@TroyConvers5000 And in the eyes on anyone who does not support lowering the quality of art.
@@slaxxxer don't force opinions on people, Mr Ebert.
@@TroyConvers5000 I hit you right back with your crass hypocrisy - don't force your opinions on others.

Bye bye Kremlin Kate. 😁
All Red Dwarf after Rob Grant left was awful. Doug on his own doesn't cut it. This was just dier.

this one ruined red dwarf.. i tell ppl not to watch it.
