I live in Portsmouth which is about 70 miles from London. I'm in my 40s and lived here all my life and got to the point of despair. I hate living in this country and wish i could leave. The UK is destined to be a 3rd world country. China is certainly going places.

Also if you want to compare wealth you can compare salaries and GDP in a country, as maybe all that money that ''in the West'' goes for salaries, healthcare etc. is used up for fancy projects in other countries that maybe are useful and maybe that means something for future but it does not indicate much that there are still 10s of millions of piss poor farmers in China and overall GDP per capita in a country is at Bulgaria's level. If a huge amount of people live in one place there will be a ton of taxpayers and especially if they cannot afford cars or there is no existing car infrastructure like in USA or old railway infra like in UK, of course you will build new railways and metro... I stayed a long time in both London and NYC. NYC metro is very convenient(7x24 service) but quite dilapidated and even filthy. London tube is quite expensive as public service and not so convenient due to fewer train stations but cleaner than NYC's and I have to hail taxi services often to get around.
You don't HAVE to hail a taxi in London. You can reach any point in the centre on 2 buses, or 1 tube, one bus.... And if you're traveling all day, the max fare is capped at £8.50 total with the right card.
