It's a bummer how a few bad apples can ruin a whole barrel of GG's. I played Indie once and we stomped them pretty bad and I went into his stream and said something like "hey GG I was the Snorlax" but just because I was excited to have played against him, and maybe kind of hoping he would say "Hey you played good" or something like that, not thinking that people do that to be jerks. I see how annoying it is when people in the live chat tell you what you should have done in their opinion, like "hey use your Unite" or "you blocked the wrong way" or some bs.

I had an opposite experience where I went into a big stream after we lost a game just to hear the streamer completely put me on blast for no real reason before I had said anything in the chat. I think streamers especially with a big platform should think about what they say about teammates because it can be very hurtful especially when someone is trying their best to be a team player.

lmao, i hopped into a stream to see what was going on from the streamers pov, and for some reason, people in the chat apparently recognized me, and started talking about how bad i was at the game, I had no idea I apparently had a reputation when i dont really play regularly, and the streamer kind of went with it, saying that it doesnt matter if x pokemon is doing bad, that the streamer had to take them out during ray fight so they dont rip ray, etc. The streamer lost the game due to a couple of bad plays, trying to go in on the enemy team with no support, and lost (getting KOd in ray pit twice without getting a KO is a massive throw, since the game revolves around whoever gets ray most of the time).
Even still, they did not take any accountability for their mistakes and the chat didnt back peddle on their take either. It seems they dont really compliment players they see in their games or criticize.

Very interesting video, and thanks for speaking on the topic!
Ironically, I am one of those who will show up in a stream after a game to say gg and drop a like if a run into a steamer I’ve watch before and like. I do it win or lose. Honestly my favorite part is rewinding after and watching the game back to see how the game unfolded from a different perspective and potentially get some insight in some good/bad plays I may have made.
Up until recently I’ve always looked at the “gg” as a way to show support and say I appreciate what you do and I’ve learned a lot from you. I 100% recognized the point you make regarding how a streamer may feel about the gg after a loss. I now still “like” the stream but only post in the chat when the streamers is on the winning side (as a teammate or opponent)

One thing you have to remember is that most of the people who know who you are(especially the ones who would reach out to you after a match) view you as being really good at the game. There's a decent chance you've taught them how to play in various ways and they're simply extremely excited to have matched against you and won. It's like the student beating the master. Very rarely is intended as disrespect. This applies not just to spragels specifically but to all content creators for any given game.

For me, gg is just genuinely what I mean. If I think it was a good game, I'll say gg. Like, I play Overwatch, and I'll still gg after a loss if it was still a genuinely good game. If Unite had a chat function, I would be doing the same thing. If I pop into a streamer's chat, I'm not denying it's partially to have some connection with the streamer, but it's mostly as a show of respect, whether win or lose. Hell, I've said gg in spragels' chat once after losing to him in a viewer Unite match

      @theemeraldmage2910 Рік тому

@@miss1ngl1nk I understand the sentiment of thinking that GG would just generally be a polite thing but it really depends on the heart behind it. But on streams where you have no clue how the commenter is saying it, especially after a loss when you are a tad salty I don't blame people who get just a little bit annoyed. Honestly on different games I have a different outlook on this but for twitch livestreams in general (which is mostly what this video is about) I think it's fine if the person who would come and say GG would do that for either a win or loss. I don't really like people who can celebrate a win without acknowledging a loss.

I also played a game together with him once and we stomped hard, that was a lot of fun. I feel like unite and mobas in general just promote let's say... Bad emotions so I get that but sometimes streamers are very in their feelings just imo. Chat is chat and while there's respect they should give the streamer I also feel like the streamer could maybe just appreciate their audience and assume good intentions. I know, easy for me to say since I'm no streamer, it's just imo.

2 days ago me and my boyfriend were featuring a game against Cris as well, the other three players in our team were solo. We literally destroyed him, he was using Zeraora (34k damage, 0 score) and we had a really, really cool Buzzwole in our team; this person went to his stream after the game, politely apologizing for having targeted him and he went all crazy saying in addiction he was about to ban them since they had a username he never saw in his chat… and the chat mocked them as well, even accusing him of sniping the game, probably finding CrisHeroes’ approval or something like that.
That, in my opinion, is a disgusting behavior these streamers should stop having. If an opponent comes over you apologizing for having targeted you it’s because they know you, your potential and how strong you are; keeping away from the fight the strongest component of a team is a functional strategy in every sport and honestly I’d feel honored to be considered like that from other players.
I was happy at first ‘cause I saw Cris complimenting us for how good we were playing despite the fact we were not a 5 stack, but then our Buzzwole showed up and everything exploded x’D… someone in the chat even pointed out me and my boyfriend were on a lose streak before winning against him, i don’t even know why… but this is probably okay for Cris, lol.
      Very, very disappointing behavior.

I’m glad you brought this up as I’ve seen it come up in streams of yours (and others) and I have to disagree for the most part. While I agree that there are bad-faith ways to use GG I think that GG does not mean anything more than what it stands for - that they enjoyed the game. If you (as the recipient of the gg) did not enjoy the game, or felt that they did not deserve the win, etc. That is on you as the player and not on the opponent for simply saying GG. I do understand that as a streamer it can feel like there is a target on your back and it’s upsetting if people only come to say hi after a win but this is because you probably taught them the game. They have a win (however small it may be) over a teacher of theirs and this is exciting. Again, my take is that GG (in most applications) simply means Good Game whether they’re a first time chatter (which I would be) or not. I hope this makes sense to folks and thanks to Jake for making such God Tier (the only god werenotfrigginnorsearoundhere) content and bringing up this topic.

GG is just a way to show good sportsmanship but can be used in a toxic way. So I will agree that hunting down a streamer to say it after you beat them is not good but GG in and of itself is not bad, it's the same as shaking hands at the end of a game in other sports. If you want to say GG in Pokemon Unite then that's what the "Good Job" on the ending screen is for.

Man I've been on a couple of streams where the streamer definitely got their panties in a bunch when someone who just beat them came on to their stream and said GGs.
The worst part is that their chat just becomes UBER toxic, making fun and just straight out bullying that person. And the sad thing is the person, may not even realize what they did was wrong. So just for that I'm glad this video got made.
I've never done this but I never understood why this was always such a big deal (until now). Before Unite I used to play alot of Pokemon Showdown, and GG was always just something win or lose that you did as a sign of respect. So I get how it would be different in this context.

Interesting video. Honestly watching this, the term "gg" has taken a more toxic turn ever since streaming became a big thing, especially for well known streamers, because with that publicity, & people around the community knowing your name, whether it's Spragels, Krashy, or CrisHeroes, etc-
It's easy for anyone to come & go through streams.
There's a lot of bitter people in the gaming community.
But there's also equal to, if not more, genuine people.
I'm glad this video was made though, it's a good one Spragels. 👍

Being a top tier introvert it is not unusual for me to watch someone for so long without chatting, doesn't necessarily mean I am less of a fan than others. I actually created a twitch account to gg Sierra after beating her in VGC, it was super exciting for me to play against her, and she was all happy and chillin'. I gg'd after wins and loses in VGC with no issues, I think it feels good to have any communication with your opponent and I took the chance. Same with Unite, Agentavocado beat me many times and I beat him less often, gg'd in both cases, gg'd allies and opponents winning and losing. Your take is nice; you might be annoyed but do not judge individuals on general intuitive views. Now I play against a top unite player and I get destroyed super hard, and I am prepared to gg after a lose. He makes a mistake and overextends before final stretch, dies and loses Zapdos, then almost makes the comeback with a final push. I did block goals and expected to lose, but barely won. Why should I be blocked and called a cu** on stream for gg'ing and saying it was crazy? And no, I didn't lol nor disrespect him, but he is such a bad person.

Idk it's good sportship, feels nice that even if you lose you recognize the mistakes you make and how you can do better in other games.

If I had a genuine good time in a match I’ll give the opponents a gg win or lose. But I won’t give a gg to my team if we are super uncoordinated in the beginning where we have like 3 people in Jungle or 2 up top and 3 on bottom or something dumb like that. It’s not bad feeling, half the time I do the thumbs up just to help people grind the achievement, but I do think it’ll help the community in the long run with the thumbs up/gg

If anything, it’s the games where I’m on the same team as the streamer and we lose that makes me a bit reluctant to want to pop in and say GG, cuz now I feel bad and that maybe I let the team down even if I had played well. Lol
Although I’d probably still pop in, cuz regardless its cool that we got to play together. And if I did do anything bad, maybe the streamer would mention it and I could learn from it.

That's interesting, where I learned it (most online games, but especially League back in the day), both teams just said it at the end (if anyone at all). There didn't seem to be any unspoken rule that it was initiated by the loser, and I don't think anyone got offended if the winner initiated it (or at least, any more offended than salty League players normally get lol).
I think a lot of younger players don't have the OG context of the StarCraft origins. Maybe it's different when they have to specifically go to your stream to GG you, but if it's in in-game-chat, I doubt too many people are trying to BM when the winner GGs.

I totally agree with the original and most of times GG intention. It is like The Hat Tip, out of recognition, respect or gratitude. To bad is sometimes used with other intentions. The same with Thank you inside the game. It is very annoying when a teammate repeatedly sends Thank you messages after going against the whole enemy team trying to get the objectives and then losing. Most of the times those quit or just exit staying at the base.

Oh lord 7:00 is super annoying to even READ in the comments let alone if it's happening to you. I know for me, coming from regular sports, GG after is just recognizing that the match was well played and good sportsmanship. I know that my squad, even in our own personal chat on discord (voice or typed) 'GG' at the end is so common in every match win or lose even when we only see it - especially important when we lost just to let everyone know we still appreciate the effort and we tried. I know if I ever get the chance to play with or against you in a match I'd be super happy either way! You, Teeds, Chrisheroes, and others essentially have taught me how to play these past few months so getting to play with any of you is a treat to show what I've learned. You'll see RocketVet saying 'Thanks for the match!' if that ever happens. I don't play a lot of ranked (I'm only Ultra rank) so unlikely but I can only hope. I run into some top players in quick matches and standard sometimes too though so hey, it could happen.

The one thing that gets me is if I have a bad match and I knew I played terribly ( be it just me or the entire team) and I get a thumbs up from someone who ko’d me a lot- I often think they’re just trying to rub it in

A match where both teams are close in skill and everyone is doing their best to win and work as a team is GG.
A game where there is a gross difference in skill and one team completely dominates the other is not a GG that’s a slaughter lmao.
I think most people who GG have good intentions and say it to have good sportsmanship but I do understand the frustration too. The latter example is not a fun experience and sometimes even winning with a bad team is stressful. Like yeah you won but you didn’t have fun doing it.

  • @Sids1192
    @Sids1192 Рік тому +1

I don't entirely agree that it's for the losing player to initiate it. Typically that is the way it works out, but I would argue that it's because the losing player is typically the one that determines *when* the game ends. In a game of StarCraft, the game can be clearly favouring one team, but the game isn't over until the losing player concedes. To initiate it as the winning player is to presume that your opponent will give up, and *that's* why it would be in poor taste. In games without that ambiguity it's pretty normal for the winning player to initiate. I've got a lot of background in irl sports, such as football. When the siren goes, the game is over, an it's common for everyone to just find the nearest opponent and shake their hand, regardless of who won. I'd argue that the comment section of a UA-cam channel or Twitch stream, the game has clearly finished, so I think it falls more into that bracket.
That said, it's not surprising that someone who lost is going to be less likely to come out of anonymous lurking and draw attention to that fact.
