  • Stow-on-the-Wold is a market town and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England, on top of an 800 ft hill, at the junction of major roads through the Cotswolds, including the Fosse Way, which is of Roman origin.

Thank you so much for this video. My husband and I took a private tour of the Cotswolds in 2011, and Stow was one of my favorite towns. I did not know its elevation of 800 feet or that 3 Roman Roads intersected here. Also, the loudest church bells in the Cotswolds! The facts surrounding the Civil War and the deaths are of interest as well. In the fall of this year I am teaching an adult education class at our high school in Scarborough , Maine, about English history, and my 2 favorite regions The Cotswolds and Yorkshire. I hope it's ok to include your videos in my handout of sources, and to encourage viewings!! I am having a tea as well at the end of the class with scones I will make myself!

Lovely videos 🙂 We like to visit Bourton on the Water in December. We are heading there in less than three weeks from the States. We will walk to Stoe for tea and cakes to get some exercise. Thank you for posting!

Interesting to learn about the tunnels and your take on them,to extract stone perhaps for building.Where I live there is a tunnel between an original road and a passage way by a church. It occured to me that in times of inclement weather the tunnel may have been a method of keeping dry and mud free, items of clothing or food stuffs may have been a practical solution...just a thought..

Hello, Robin . Was going through an old pictorial book on England, and had a section on Stow-on-the-Wold. Thought I would look it up on You tube and found your channel. Thoroughly enjoyed your video. I subscribed and will get all notifications. I commend you for all your efforts... superb production! (greetings from Arizona).

It is truly an incredibly beautiful square, there. Just what plant did that lovely asphalt come from, I wonder?

I went here on Saturday. There's a cracking shop with antiqus and old books in it. Old ladybird and observer books.

I think you’ve confused the two lanes leading into the north square and their design intent with the numinous passageways which lead directly into the square which were used - in living memory - for safely running the sheep in and out. (Several can easily be seen). The battle was elsewhere but Royalists fleeing the battlefield were eventually pursued into the town. There is a prominent plaque commemorating this on the freestanding monument in the middle of the square. The pub is one of dozens of inns across the land all claiming to be the country’s oldest but peculiarly can’t quite lay their hands on any evidence? Nice film - thank you. PS I never understand why people talk about the Cotswolds in the past tense all the time? Like it’s a museum? Never any narrative relevant to today?

Hey Robin, why did the villages need permission to be a market town or to have limited fair days??
