I will never get people that think any of the Lost Children arc as filler, especially how it’s the point where Guts slowly seems to realize that he can’t go on like this. Guts, early on still acts like he did in the BS arc, yet misses several chances when he fights Rosine especially in their final battle. We saw Guts early on in the BS arc… but this him at his worst after two years of following rumors and his brand, trying to find the God Hand and killing any Apostles he comes a cross. Using children as bait, risking to kill Jill if it means he can get Rosine, all while not really dealing with his loss and grieve (also the re-contextualized appearances of his child). The Skull Knight out right says it when they find Casca surrounded by the ghost, she was pregnant with Guts’s child but her being violated essentially corrupted it. The canon arm was made by Ricker with parts that he found in the work shop, it’s where it gets established that he’s the smart guy/Q to Guts. Yeah, so before he officially meets Puck, Guts gets saved by elf dust twice. And both times it has to be specifically Puck’s dust, as when Judeau gave some to Casca in the Golden Age he said he got it from a traveling group of performers he traveled with. After the Eclipse Rickert got some by the same group and saved them with the help of the Skull Knight. The parallels with the sword will be explored in one of the best chapters of the story in the next volume. That is straight up amazing life advice. I like Jill a lot, she great way to show the life of regular people in this world. Her father’s “friend” tried to assault her, but she manages to close the door to her room. But seeing as he’s a self absorbed alcoholic it’s questionable if he even would care (so far), it’s clear when this arc is over. In the German release the prototype is a bonus chapter. It’s interesting, you can definitely see a lot of seeds. How the different levels of the world work will get explained in detail down the road. One of the beetles gets Guts on an artery (plus the usual cuts and scrapes) that’s why he loses a lot of blood. The Mark will bleed in the presence of demons and “sting” the pain gets stronger the “more evil” the being causing it is. That’s why Guts could barely move when he was on the same plane of existence with the God Hand. The adult attack… yeah. Miura definitely did not do the violence, be it in a fight or sexual for shock value. That addiction metaphor is a great fit. I’m so excited that you will read Monster at some point, I’d put it right next to Berserk as one of my personal favorites. Both are amazing story but both deal with some serious subject that not everyone can handle, but I also think that both at their core are stories about hope and the fight for a better world. This one’s special to me since it starts around the time I was born and involves a lot of real European history. Dragon Ball will be fun too I think the pre Z part is so much fun and probably the first story I remember where the reader/watcher grows up with the protagonist and the main reason I still have a soft spot for it.

Monster is a slow burn with a lot of build up but if you pay attention it’s ridiculously rewarding, it uses real events to build an amazing story and like with Berserk the author is amazing at creating these amazing characters where even minor characters will stay with you for a long time. Not as ultra violent as Berserk but there’s a lot of mental and physical child abuse. Urusawa is an amazing writer. Dragon Ball is just fun and adventurous especially early on, since with the start of Z a lot of characters sadly fall to the wayside. Toriyama was/is amazing at the fight choreography and it’s so much fun to see him and the characters grow with each fight. You guy probably already have a long list I’d still recommend you check out Battle Angel Alita, especially since the series isn’t that long but in my eyes just as good as Berserk and Monster. Also a bit on the violent side but since a lot of characters are Cyborgs it’s thankfully not quite as brutal as Berserk, but it’s still quite gory.
There’s people that don’t like this arc at all, they call it filler, pointless, I do not understand this perspective whatsoever. I love this arc, it has some wonderful character development for Guts, we have Gill which is a great character, the return of Puck & brilliant fight scenes & this is when the art really starts to get epic.
Just a word of advice on the anime, since you said you wanna see it! The '97 anime and the later movie trilogy, both are alternative versions of Golden Age. I recommend both, even tho' they skip certain events they are worth watching by themselves. The 2016 adaptation however, which adapts the arc after the one in this video, is a total skip. Do not watch that version, the production quality is terrible and the changes they made are absurd. It is a very disrespectful investment on part of the producers and we are better off pretending it never happened.
I've been looking forward to these, I love getting these fresh perspectives on Berserk. I can't wait to hear your discussions about the Conviction arc and beyond. It gets so good and I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the other characters that show up as the story continues. When Puck talks in small dialogue boxes, what I think you're supposed to do is imagine he talks at the same time as the bigger dialogue. The reason for that is because people don't listen to what he's saying and he's using that mostly to crack jokes or break the 4th wall, which I find either hilarious or a little immersion breaking, it's funny but he'll do it too often.
Love Puck, he’s just so wonderful for adding levity to a truly horrific story, and he gets even better when Isidro comes into the story and they sort of team up as buddies, the banter between the two is just hilarious, as it’s a totally different dynamic than Puck & Guts. Then he constantly keeps changing appearance to look like a soldier, samurai or countless other costumes is just hilarious.

I would recommend Vinland then Vagabond (truly I would recommend the reverse but you already started Vinland). Berserk, Vagabond, Vinland and Kingdom make up the seinen "big four" if you will. And none of them are finished 😂

it does highlight the worst of humanity but I think the overall message of berserk is to keep fighting no matter how bad things get the reason. Why I love lost children arc so much because I went through sexual abuse in my childhood kinda why this story will always have a special place in my heart. bad shit happens but we choose if we turn that trauma into something positive or negative

There’s probably going to be 14 deluxe editions, they release a new one every 4 months, 11 will be out in July, and then 12 in November. So it’s going to be another year before it’s complete, which drives me absolutely nuts, just release the entire series, waiting 4 years to read a series that’s already complete is beyond stupid.
But it’s not by chance, it’s all causality. But I was so happy to see the return of Puck, I love how he was teased for a few pages and then we got the full page spread of his return haha. I’m a huge Puck fan, especially later in the story.

I'd like to add one small funfact showing how consistent Miura is with characters throughout the story: remember the very first apostle that Guts kills with the Dragonslayer? He can be seen (untransformed) in the crowd of apostles surrounding Griffith in the lake righ before the Eclipse. For some reason, I love how Miura included this (and many more details).

Miura was such an unbridled genius of his craft...RIP, I would love to see his life's work get a faithful, well executed anime adaptation one of these days
I sent this unsolicited ramble to someone else who finished lost children before and they liked it so I thought I would just send it here in case you guys were intrested at all. Just to note this covers the ending that goes into deluxe volume 6 so please be careful of spoilers anyone reading this. Guts and Jill run parallel in this arc, and the parallels are stark. For example both have almost no Mother Figure and an abusive father figure. Both father figures are injured due to war (both even losing/wounding their legs in battle) both are alcoholics who take out their own insecurities/frustrations out on their children. Both Guts and Jill are also victims of at least implied sexual assault, and both parents are complicit with it occurring or at the bare minimum Jills dad doesn't say anything to his 'friends'. Guts and Jill also both have a friend who has reached apostle-hood and seemed to have escaped the depressing and awful lives they both and many others in Berserks world face, as well as having a deep implied (on both occasions walking the line of romantic/platonic very precariously) connection with them. Peekaf's story is almost a prophecy at this point for how accurate it is as a warning to both of them that if they continue to wander into fantasy (Guts angrily stalking and killing apostles in his futile search for Griffith and Jill's short journeying with Guts before being told to go back, and going to the fairy land with Rosine) and refuse to face reality they will one day return much like Peekaf to their home and no one will be there. Peekaf was ostracized for looking different I think both Jill and Guts can relate to this. Jill being one of the only children left in the village and having dissimilar upbringings to a lot of the other children and Guts constantly residing within the interstice. Rosine's death where she admits that she didn't see elves, that she had convinced herself of a false reality and that she avoided the truth which she understandably couldn't face is a foreshadowing of what might happen to both of them if they continue down this path. Guts and Jill are the lost children, they need to grow up/mature and stop believing in fantasy and using escapism to look for their paradise, hence the line 'there is no paradise for you to escape to'. They need to face their bleak reality. Both of which in their own way do so. Again great video, hope to be able to catch the next livestream!

This is gonna be just my opinion. Starting with Berserk and Vinland Saga is problematic for new manga readers because I think you're really gonna have a hard time finding manga series on the same level. Anything done by the authors of Vagabond and Monster, as well as Kingdom are also pretty good but there's not that many good gems in manga for me. Besides those I also recommend you Fullmetal Alchemist and the overlooked classic Lone Wolf and Cub.

The lost children chapters are in my opinion the best Berserk has to offer in terms of healing, I always reread this chapter and I’m always pulled back in to the lost children arc whenever I’m going through emotional trauma or troubles in my life some thing about seeing Guts being an absolute mad animal, a beast of death, and an absolute monster, the real demon in this chapter or arc I should say is guts. As it is told from the perspective of Jill ,guts looks like more of a monster then Rosine does. And to touch on the Peekaf story doesn’t it kind of sound like guts 😉😉
When i read the Lost childrens chapters for the first time. I kinda think Jill and Rosin are the protagonists and Guts is the antagonist for quite sometime
The baby is Guts and Casca’s. Remember, they had sex first. The infant was corrupted by Griffith…. If you want to say that kid had three parents, I guess you wouldn’t be wrong. And I’m confirming that Guts Jr is in the Black Swordsman arc, tormenting his dad like any baby would.

I still can’t believe Berserk doesn’t have a full anime, every other big manga has a full anime adaptation. Look at how big the Demon Slayer anime is at the moment, it’s massive, someone needs to make a perfect 1:1 adaptation of the manga.

If you’re going to read Attack on Titan then definitely buy the colossal editions, they’re the larger format like the deluxe editions of Berserk & much better page quality so the blacks are much deeper and it’s just so much easier to read, especially if you have bad eyesight. I had already bought 12 regular volumes before I found out about the colossal editions so had to buy from the start again. But yea I hear Vagabond is excellent, I haven’t started reading it yet, I’m missing vol 5, 9 & 12, as soon as I find vol 5 I’ll start to read it.
I thought it was pretty clear that anyone sacrificed during the eclipse is dead. Guts and Caska getting away was an incredible event. So yeah, I don't get the hopes for Judea being alive after that. I guess it _is_ the world of Berserk so go nuts. Anything could happen. 😆

So had to look it up, Puck’s weapon of choice is a burdock. The dried burdock seed pods are like sharp needles, almost like thistles.

Avoid the TV show though, they made some of the dumbest and most unnecessary changes. The lost children chapters are in my opinion the best Berserk has to offer in terms of healing, I always reread this chapter and I’m always pulled back in to the lost children arc whenever I’m going through emotional trauma or troubles in my life some thing about seeing Guts being an absolute mad animal, a beast of death, and an absolute monster, the real demon in this chapter or arc I should say is guts. As it is told from the perspective of Jill ,guts looks like more of a monster then Rosine does. And to touch on the Peekaf story doesn’t it kind of sound like guts 😉😉

I still can’t believe Berserk doesn’t have a full anime, every other big manga has a full anime adaptation. Look at how big the Demon Slayer anime is at the moment, it’s massive, someone needs to make a perfect 1:1 adaptation of the manga.

If you’re going to read Attack on Titan then definitely buy the colossal editions, they’re the larger format like the deluxe editions of Berserk & much better page quality so the blacks are much deeper and it’s just so much easier to read, especially if you have bad eyesight.
I had already bought 12 regular volumes before I found out about the colossal editions so had to buy from the start again. But yea I hear Vagabond is excellent, I haven’t started reading it yet, I’m missing vol 5, 9 & 12, as soon as I find vol 5 I’ll start to read it.
Berserk came out before resident evil I think Jill valentine is based off berserk's Jill at least the way she looks is and her name
