Rich you should really give this series a read. its good. real good. its been going over 30 years and its nice seeing how the art has evolved. Along with the story.
Great video, Volume 34 is another excellent volume to see Miura's art. If you are looking for other manga with unique art I would look at Dorohedoro by Q Hayashida or JoJo's Bizarre Adventure by Hirohiko Araki.
There are some elements that are so unmistakably manga. The style of the hatching in some places, the generous application of zip-a-tone (specially on top of hatching) and, obviously, the faces
@13:50 Pretty sure Falconia's general layout and architecture is based on Florence, that spot in particular is very similar to the area where the Uffizi are located. That's probably what it reminds you of.
I just started reading Berserk last year and am really enjoying it. And I've been inspired by his drawings a lot. I was never a manga guy but in like 2002 probably I did an art contest on some horror blog and actually won (first time ever) and the prize was one of the Uzumaki books by Junji Ito. At the time I wasn't even interested in any of it but I read it and it totally absorbed into me. I couldn't get it out of my head, must like the plot of the book. Years later I finally started collecting his stuff and was just blown away. You should definitely check out his stuff.
I love Berzerk. The artist has like different phases. Hell he has a phase where it looked like he was influenced by Jim Lee. His art started off kind of crude when compared to this stuff and then he got a lot better an then he just kept switching things up. Some people don't like the newer art as much as some of the earlier stuff, but its just as good now as it was back in the day. Its more of a taste thing.
I think the chapters you're looking at at the beginning of the video are from around the time Miura had just made the switch to digital. Screen tone used a lot in the early chapters though. Flipping was more common around the time Berserk started than it is today but as far as I know Berserk was never flipped in any of the English translations.
The art in berserk is god tier. Starts out a little rough in the first few volumes but quickly gets incredible. And the story, holy shit it's incredible it's my all time favorite
@@amuroray9115 I wouldn't count out the possibility just yet of seeing an ending, his assistants are super talented and I'm sure he left a detailed outline of his plan but it won't be the same as if done by his hand. He was a master and will be unbelievably missed by millions, rest in peace to the original Struggler🙏
thanks for the guess. I had to go out to my storage for something else and actually was able to find the book. Here's his name: James Christensen his work is super detailed. Botero is very cool though. thanks again. That was a damn good guess!!
These were good issues to look at. Lots of variety. Glad you liked it! It looks like these issues were from 2012-13. Some of the stuff toward the end of the video is among my favorite art from the series. It's been in publication for like 30 years so the style has shifted a lot over time. They switched to digital or something in 2018-2019 and the style became softer, lighter and with thicker lines, to much controversy. Earlier on the draftsmanship wasn't as good as it is here. It's a great story though, worth a read. Thanks for the video.
I see this seems to be purely to check out the art but I strongly suggest reading this from the beginning. This is an amazing story with amazing art, if you appreciate those things you wont be disappointed guaranteed 👍
Vagabon and Berserk are both very good in their own way, they have both beautiful art. But the main difference i would say is the character writing and story. While Vagabond is a very philosophical approach to a character driven story, Berserk is a very psychlogical approach to a character driven story.
First time I saw the work. When I read it. I'll be able to dial it in more. Sometimes watching it back helps it sink in too. I will do more videos on this series that will go way more in depth
@@RichardFriendartist you know the biggest difference between japanese manga and western comics is the strong Focus on character and long term story. I really don't know if miuras art is soo good but he sure works hard! Talk about detail.

Hilarious, I got directed to this by UA-cam, I was thinking who is the calously overconfident person talking about Miura's art like, eh, that's kinda cool. Then I found out he works primarily for DC. Cool, but yeah, Berserk, a man's 30+ year masterpiece, try that in America if you can't self finance. You lose.
GANTZ 0 is really bad in its female characters they have no soul and only act like fan service I really get disgusted from that stuff so I won't be reading it and heard the ending is a bit dissapointing but the story is good idk how tho
Miura has assistants though, right? Not that I care when it comes to the finished product, but I always judge comic and manga art a little differently.
He has two or so but he doesn't work with them like others do, but now that he is getting old he wants to finish Berserk and started a new manga with his assists
Berserk is a long, intense, but absolutely amazing read. Cannot recommend enough
why?
@@ZedforZero uh, it’s berserk

Funny thing is, Kentaro Miura does almost everything himself. He only lets his assistants do some background soldiers and floors/roads.

Just read the series from the beginning. You're cheating yourself out of a great experience.
The fat medieval guy looks like he was based off King Henry VIII to me, he is a famous old brutal King here in England.
Berserk is known for having actual historical references in the story so yeah maybe Miura took inspiration from historical European/Asian rulers.
