  • R Type by IREM features in this VS game / system comparison, released by Irem in the arcades in 1987 and then released onto the home systems for 8 Bit and 16 Bit home computers. The console releases soon followed and this is a title that still gets a run out on the many Retro Game systems to this day. Simply put one of the best arcade shoot em ups you will find that is a proven retro classic.
    I am taking a look at the 8 Bit systems of the day but will also compare the 16 Bit computer conversions too and then take a look and some of the initial 8 Bit console releases of the day.
    So lets take a look firstly at R Type on the original Arcade followed by the 8 Bit systems featuring:
    Commodore 64
    Sinclair ZX Spectrum
    Amstrad CPC
    And then the 16 Bit systems featuring:
    Commodore Amiga
    Atari ST
    And finally the 8 Bit console systems featuring:
    Sega Master System
    PC Engine
    Nintendo Gameboy

    The A500 version of r-type was mind blowing back in the day. The Chris Huelsbeck title track was amazing, although I think the C64 version of the track was even better. Pair that up with amazing gameplay, and one of the most iconic bosses in video game history- dobkeratops - and you’re onto a winner. Another great vid OG, really brought back great memories this one, Kudos Brother! 🤙🏼

    The Spectrum version is in my opinion the best coin-op conversion for that platform. A recent hack includes AY music and effects from the Amstrad and MSX versions, you choose which one upon loading. It manages to further improve an already excellent effort.
    The C64 one was competently done but lacked - how can I describe it? - some "magic", I altogether liked it but found it much less impressive than the Spectrum version.
    The PC Engine one... well, that's really superb, can't say anything less.
    Thanks for this comparison!

    R-Type is one of the most iconic horizontal shooters ever made even to this day!!
    The Amstrad is a port of the ZX Spectrum code. Both machines use the Z80 CPU so they just ported the code across to the Amstrad to save time and money. Amstrad could do so much better. In all fairness though the Spectrum version is really nice with no colour clash or anything that messes up the gameplay, very clever how they managed it. C64 is a great version all round and at the time another game called Katakis came out and got banned as it was similar (not really) to R-Type. Thing is though it was actually better than the official conversion of R-Type so it was ordered to be taken off sale only to reappear 3 month or so later called Denaris. But yeah I do like the C64 version even though it is missing the spinning enemies halfway through the first level which stands out given you had to fly inside and take out the main gun to disable them all and get out the other side.
    Amiga version is all but arcade perfect and the ST version isn't bad but just doesn't feel right. Even the enemy patterns at the start are different to the arcade. It does look like the colour is off on the ST version you have done there. If you check out other vids of it the white balance isn't as high. Original discs don't work on the STe so can't use the enhanced hardware unfortunately :(
    Gameboy and Master System are great and it is impressive on both systems especially Gameboy given it's limitations. One thing I will say though is disable the smoothing on the Gameboy emulator you used as it looks terrible (same with SNES emulator)
    Now the elephant in the room. The PC Engine is 4th Generation (16 Bit era) alongside Megadrive, SNES, Neo Geo etc. The CPU was made by Hudson Soft and based on one of their earlier 8 Bit CPU's but the CPU used in the PC Engine is a different part number. Much like the Atari ST which stands for Sixteen Thirty Two as it has 16 Bit external bus with 32 Bit internal stuff. PC Engine is definitely a 16 Bit machine as an 8 Bit in no way shape or form could do what that machine is doing. It would have been better putting it up against Super R-Type on the SNES

    • @OGDuffy
      @OGDuffy  3 роки тому

      Hi Iain, thanks for that matey, great input as always 😉 To be fair the PC Engine is an odd one as depends which articles you read online. Some say 8 Bit other 16 Bit? So a bit confusing. But that said, what an amazing little console! Producing those quality games and measuring in at roughly 13 CM, small was defiantly beautiful in this case 😎

    • @beezle1976
      @beezle1976 3 роки тому +1

      PC Engine used a 7.16mhz hu6820 cpu, a 6502 derivative, which is 8bit.
      It also has 2 16 bit graphics chips.
      Bit width doesn't mean a lot.
      Original xbox is only 32bit, nintendo64 is 64 bit, dreamcast 128bit.
      Its the architecture, instruction set, support hardware, etc. that defines a systems capabilities.

    • @MrLtia1234
      @MrLtia1234 3 роки тому

      The real reason is that the 8/16 bit thing doesn't have any effect on graphics or real direct effect on game performance. Look at it this way: the Intellivision (barely better than the 2600) is 16 bit and the Sam Coupe (which has Atari St graphics) is 8 bit. The PC Engine has an 8 bit data bus, so it is definitely 8 bit, regardless of what the graphics chips are doing internally.
      It just refers to the size of the data bus, so while being able to send more complicated instructions in one go can be a good thing, it doesn't really have anything to do with it. If it were true, we'd all be using 512 bit computers!
      Helped with the marketing, though!

    Usually the Amiga will beat the ST because of sheer extra power, so when I had an ST and even now, I usually judge the ST version on how well they used the available hardware. So the ST gets a 9/10 for use of the machine's base capabilities. There is a Deluxe Version (home brew) around that was created using the STE hardware. It's much better and makes use of the sound and scrolling of the slightly advanced hardware.

    The PC Engine Japanese version had to be split over 2 HuCards as they did not have the capacity to fit the whole game on one (the capacity was 2mbit at that time). The US version was able to fit on only one HuCard as the capacity had at that time increased to 4mbits. Capacity increased over the years to a whopping 20mbits for games like Street Fighter 2. Great conversions on all systems with R-Type (once they'd sorted a proper CPC version!). I'd have put the Speccy version over the C64 version as it implements the whole bloody thing - nothing missing from the arcade in terms of gameplay, sprite size, movement etc. and it plays more 'like' the arcade, just that 128k version sadly not implemented. There was a homebrew version later, but sadly they opted for original music rather than the arcade. I'd say the C64 version is what you'd expect - silky smooth, glorious music, but small sprites and missing features.

Of course it has the chunkier colour pixel modes, but that would have required them to completely redraw the graphics specifically for the Amstrad. Probably because C64 technically is a much more advanced machine with a lot more hardware features, like hardware scrolling and sprites. C64 version is simply better: better graphics, better sound, better scrolling,

    No official Speccy 128k version unfortunately. A group of hackers have released a 128k version since which includes a rendition of the arcades music.

    R-Type for ZX Spectrum is one version only, 48/128K play and run the same, 48K is multi-load, think might be a 128K in single load? SMS version is really good. There is GameBoy colour variant, which is reworking of the GAMEBOY code, called R-Type DX.

      Hudson soft were a principle developer for PC Engine games, and Hardware. If the info I've read online is correct, the card sized ROM storage format first appeared on SEGA 1000/ 3000, and later featured on Sega Master System, used to have Teddy Boy (Teddy Boy Blues, in arcade) and My Hero for SMS cards. Teddy Boy is a great multi-directional scrolling maze, platform shooter, perhaps a bad shout for a comparison vid since the SMS version is the only version that got a physical release, along with typical paraphernalia that accompanies, a retail game, except arcade game The card slot was also needed for the SMS 3D glass, which is why the glasses don't work on SMS 2, it has no card slot. Anyway Hudson owned the rights for the tech and used it to best effect with PC Engine.

    R-Type was one of those games that made me want to punch a whole through my TV, get another TV, and do it again. Yes, I find it that infuriating and exceptional in equal parts. However, if you ask me what is the very best port of R-Type for the 8-bit and 16-bit consoles...I would say hands down the TG-16 version is the best.

    Lol the C64 was the dogs breakfast when you play the whole thing. It's not even R-type it's a re-skin of Katakis. Sprite patterns are all over the place, some don't move, some things can be shot and should not be able to. Sure it had sound but it was a terrible conversion. Poor Amstrad getting speccy seconds again but the fan remake made up for it and is amazing. The speccy conversion was an impossible conversion, it should not have done what it did. Compare Level 3 on all 3 8bit ports that shows you the big difference.
    3rd C64
    2nd ZX Spectrum
    1st Amstrad Fan Remake.
    OR 3rd C64, 2nd Amstrad (original) and 1st Zx Spectrum
    Master system was Brilliantly done hats off for a full arcade shooter in the little console that could. It pushed the machine to the limits and beyond.
    16 bit ST/Amiga both were good and both were bad I preferred the ZX spectrum conversion at the time (Had all 3 machines at the time) Something about the Amiga version felt off. The ST had poorer graphics and sound but felt better to play, don't know what it was but the Amiga wins in the end.
    Though that's my opinion..

      @@OGDuffy It would be a boring place if we all agreed :) The PC Engine version was the one we drooled over in the mags back in the day BUT...when i got it I was amazed and disappointed. The Audio and great much like the arcade original. The disappointment was hardware limitations with the screen res hence the scrolling of the screen vertically. It reminded me of the local arcade when the R-Type machine borked and did the same thing...
