In this video, we are talking about problem behavior in kids with ASD, and how to stop problem behaviors. As ABA professionals, a big part of our job is to reduce problem behaviors in our clients. Many times, we’re called in as a sort of fairy godmother, expected to make problematic behaviors disappear by waving a magic wand.
It’s also common for problematic behavior to only be addressed when looking for an acceptable punishment or consequence, however, that’s not the best approach. Problem behaviors are always telling us something, and it’s our job to get to the root cause. Stressors can come from a lot of places at home and in the classroom, and it’s important to rule out things like medical or environmental issues.

This was one thing I had to get across to teachers. They thought I could magically make the behavior go away. I had to figure out what the function was. They saw a kid moving around and tapping his foot and I saw a kid that needed a fidget and taught him how to ask for a fidget after recognizing those things in the body. I had to explain its a process and not something that happens right away. I also saw the behavior as improving where they (new school year) just saw negative behavior. I new what I needed to work on with him to get him to be successful. Also remembering accommodations and following the behavior plan can prevent many behaviors.
