If you're worried about birds of prey, just put in a lot of low shelters. Birds kill with speed from above, and chickens are actually really, really good and seeing them. So if you give them a lot of places to hide under, the owls and hawks can't dive bomb them to kill them.
@@charleshamby575 now can a bird still take a chicken under low cover? Yes, I've seen it. But 9 times out of 10...no, 98 times out of 100, the other chickens jump in to help. Or the chicken escapes on it's own and you'll find them scratched or cut up.

Hey just a helpful tip from someone who raises meat chickens almost every year. Meat chickens are normally ready to be butchered after 8-10 weeks any longer and they will get to big and not be able to move to eat or drink and they will die and if that doesn’t happen they will eventually have heart attacks because of how big they get and they will die. Please help like this so that we can help inform him because i would hate to see him put all this effort into them and then have them all die
For the baby chicks u have to have the light in a corner so that they can get away from the heat if they need to having it in the middle they can’t get away from it so they will over heat
If it were me, I don’t think it would be an owl. I’ve had owls kill chickens and they usually take of with the chicken. But I know that mink and ferrets are more than willing to take a chicken given the right opportunity. That would explain why they only took the head because they couldn’t bite through the wire or climb over to eat the whole think they could only get to the head.
Owls will take the whole bird. N any weasel would of dropped all 12 birds they kill for fun when there is abundance of life. Real quick way to check is look at the back of the animals neck that got Killed if it got holes in it then it was a weasel. I had one weasel kill 60+ rabbits in a night time

Flair tractor supply sells some really good fly traps, they are like a little bag and they have lime green on them. We use them for our horses and they catch TONS of flys! They put a big dent in the fly population. They are about $7 but its worth it!
Flair, a good idea with the dog proof traps is leave the trap peg loose in the ground. If its super stiff in the ground then the rickys will break bones and stuff trying to thrash around and end up chewing off their arm. If you leave it loose in the they will still get trapped but they will be able to get the trap peg out of the ground and allow the swivel to work and they will relax a lot faster than if they are stuck completely. Coon creek actually just lays the traps down on their sides sometimes, it still works.

The way the two dead ones were kinda behind that dome, I'd say that they more-less killed themselves trying to get away from whatever predator it was. The headless one may have been trying to get away and stuck its head through a hole in the wire and it became a glory hole for the owl. lol.
Flair minks can take only heads of chickens, but we lost 21 in 1 night, I didn't close their coop door. It got in under our 1/2" X 4' hardware cloth that has netting over the top. I have totally free range hens. When I buy new birds, I put a temporary pen around the coop, introduce the new birds when the originals are on the roost and then just take the pen down after 3 days. Never have them go any further than about 300 yards and they all come back to the coop at night and lay in the boxes. They have ad-lib food and water right by the coop. birds of prey attack with speed, an owl isn't likely to walk into your coop what you should do is get low profile shelters so bird of prey can't get to them with speed. chickens are really good at seeing things in the sky so if they get KOed that's on them after that point.
for where im from we've always noticed that its skunks and weasels that'll actually just take there heads when there sticking them through the fence holes
Flair with the chickens you should have the baby chickens laying eggs way before they are a year. They will be in full laying by the age of 10 months or earlier. I have had 3 batches of chickens and we get them in late march/early April and they start laying by September
Just a tip to train them, only feed them in the coop before you feed the animals at night so they will eventually go there every night so you can lock them up
Also raccoons and coyotes will chase the birds to one side and when they stick there head through another one will rip it off. Had it happen a lot to my birds had to put smaller wire so they couldent stick there head through
Love your videos and it makes me happy every time to see that you have uploaded before the chickens you need to make sure they don't get the taste of blood otherwise they will start eating each other and the chickens that you want to let out come during like dust see if they're in their Coop if they are then that means they will go to bed at the same time every day normally that's what happens to my chickens. Hey, Flair! Idk if you spend much time watching other youtubers, but Justin Rhodes is super knowledgeable about chickens. You could probably use your meat chickens to help with the fly population when they're old enough. He also has excellent ideas for making mobile chicken tractors & chicken "shaws."
Put up lights, wind chimes, leave a small radio on for noise, it will deter predators from coming back, shoot you can even tie soda/beer cans together and hang them up to make noise. I had a Ricky problem with my birds, hung up solar lights and wind chimes and haven’t had a problem in over a year. Get scratch grain and sprinkle that along the ground so they learn to scratch for food. Also they will return to their “home” every night before dusk, if you’re wanting to move them to the big animal pen, put a coop in there with the birds for a couple of days before releasing them out to free range. You can also get a solar powered-timed chicken door off Amazon, that way you can ensure all the chickens are locked inside the coop every night
Putting the chicken coop again the big pen with the hole in the fence would work flawlessly. And then make your run in the grass area where the old rabbit pin was at.

you’re on the right track buddy, fly traps promote flys to be around but you’re gonna eliminate the problem (all the animal poop and stale feed on the ground) by running those chickens through the area. clip the flight feathers if you wanna keep them in the fence? idk just an idea i thought of spitballin
The first chickens I raised when I was little was meat chickens but we didn't know that at the time. They got so big eating worms, slugs, meal worms, grass, fruits and vegetables. And of course crushed oyster shells so the can lay eggs. Because of that, the ones I had gave us BIG brown eggs that sometimes had 2 or 3 yolks in one egg.The chickens ended up bigger than our small dogs!😅
I wouldn’t solely think that the culprit was a bird, I lost two of my chickens last month from a group of 4 raccoons. Tore both the chickens heads off, got it on my trail cam
To make them go back to the cooper at night one way is to feed them just before sundown or when you're locking up the chickens and do leave the food in the coop
possums have been known decaptators, but they would also eat the meat like racoons and would come back for more so to speak. I'm going to have to say it's a raptor (bird of prey) of some kind, owl is likely, but golden eagles are chicken killers too, they're rare in the east coast, but all to common in the central US area and they've been known to be nocturnal hunters, but then again so are owls so I'm in box here.
Hey flair… the easiest way is to use the skidsteer and clean the pin. Pile the poop far way for compost! And sell it or use it! Just once a day or so gotta clean up the pin.
I'm no farmer, but I had 6 chickens free range, pretty much just feed them scraps from the restaurant I worked at. Stale bread, mostly. They lasted a couple years until a urban coyote came in to the area.
@@mattreid8292 the bread was whole grain, and wasn't their main food. Free range... they ate whatever they wanted, scratched in the woods for bugs. I started out feeding them normal chicken food. They preferred to go find bugs and green stuff.
hey flair i would suggest putting the big chickens in the sheep pen like you have said but put chicken wire at the bottom of the gate so its just touching the floor but the chickens cant get through and clip a few feathers on one wing so they cant fly over the fence

you’re on the right track buddy, fly traps promote flys to be around but you’re gonna eliminate the problem (all the animal poop and stale feed on the ground) by running those chickens through the area. clip the flight feathers if you wanna keep them in the fence? idk just an idea i thought of spitballin
Weasels are also known to take the heads off but never actually eat the birds.
Buddy quick as hell seen that bird dippin and he jumped into action
Flair love the vids and I would suggest a northern strain largemouth fry so they grow much faster than one like a Florida strain
I always thought yall sucked at building stuff until the other day I was on a different channel and it made your construction look like a pro lmao
i been waiting for this AYAYYAYAYAYS I LOVE UR LOVE I rlly like it
Flair you always kill me with the timmy accent 🤣 the kid voice zoom in is to funny!
The first chickens I raised when I was little was meat chickens but we didn't know that at the time. They got so big eating worms, slugs, meal worms, grass, fruits and vegetables. And of course crushed oyster shells so the can lay eggs. Because of that, the ones I had gave us BIG brown eggs that sometimes had 2 or 3 yolks in one egg.The chickens ended up bigger than our small dogs!😅
honestly the farm has been looking great lately
I wouldn’t solely think that the culprit was a bird, I lost two of my chickens last month from a group of 4 raccoons. Tore both the chickens heads off, got it on my trail cam
To make them go back to the cooper at night one way is to feed them just before sundown or when you're locking up the chickens and do leave the food in the coop
Jake is an absolute unit of an athlete 👀
Mf looked like OJ hurdling fences!
possums have been known decaptators, but they would also eat the meat like racoons and would come back for more so to speak.
That is terrible diet for chickens probably for the best a coyote came threw some people don’t deserve animals.
@@mattreid8292 the bread was whole grain, and wasn't their main food. Free range... they ate whatever they wanted, scratched in the woods for bugs. I started out feeding them normal chicken food. They preferred to go find bugs and green stuff.
@@johnn3542 Any Moldy bread isn’t good for chickens
Listen junior your mocking voice kills me every time 😂
It's a skin walker Pedro 🤣. Definitely it's an owl
hey flair i would suggest putting the big chickens in the sheep pen like you have said but put chicken wire at the bottom of the gate so its just touching the floor but the chickens cant get through and clip a few feathers on one wing so they cant fly over the fence
I like the little voice you use for the people that comment.
