How to Fix a Leaking Oil Drain Tube on a John Deere Riding Mower (Without Making a Mess)

- Step by Step!
Today we'll be working on a John Deere LA130 riding mower with a Briggs and Stratton V-Twin engine.
Do you have grass and dirt stuck to the side of your engine and frame? That's a telltale sign you may have an oil leak!
The oil drain tube on this engine has come loose, and is causing oil to leak all over the side of the engine, as well as the frame.
We'll start off by power washing the engine to clean up the area we'll be working on, then we'll run the engine for a few minutes to heat up the oil so we can drain the oil, and replace the oil filter.
We won't be adding oil until the loose oil drain tube is fixed!
I'm using Permatex Red Thread locker, which takes approx. 24hrs to fully cure.
Buy it here: amzn.to/3DfqIxI
You can use a 15/16" socket on these oil drain tubes. I'm using a Milwaukee impact, but you can usually do this by hand with a ratchet or wrench.

Well son of a gun! How correct you are. Just did mine a few minutes ago. I never thought about checking it. Tomorrow I'll put new oil in it. A sincere Thank You.
Only additions I’d recommend
1) prop up drain side of machine to keep oil away from threads
2) brake clean or mek to those threads before applying locker. They sell a primer but I find degreaser works just as well.
Yea using ramps on the right side would definitely help keep oil away from the threads. This was more of less just a quick fix method for anyone who thought maybe they had to completely remove the pipe. I even notice the red thread locker they use on the new replacement pipes they sell isn't very good either.. that might be a video on its own lol thanks for watching!
Nice one, Jake!
I would add, for folks who aren’t too familiar with “permanent” red threadlocker, most threadlockered fasteners can be easily undone with the application of heat. A hot air gun or propane torch softens them up enough to be removed.
Yes they definitely aren't "permanent" in that sense, but more so than the blue thread locker. Thanks for watching!
Simple explained. This is why it's one of my favorite you tube channel.. great job. Chubby butcher
Thanks for watching!
Quick and easy fix that you have shown anyone can do and it works just fine.
Thanks for watching!
These videos are very well done and are a great help for us DIY'ers out there. Thanks-
Thanks for watching!
Great tip. I’ve pulled them all the way out and put Teflon tape on them in the past but this is much easier and less messy. 😁👍
Yea that works too, just have to use the yellow Teflon tape that's oil and gas resistant. But I notice that stuff, or even the blue thread locker comes loose over time.
Not good for oil or grease 😕
Good tips, especially marking the filter.
Thanks for watching
Very neat and useful tip. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
All kinds of things I learned the oil tip I didn't know so I now know the right oil to use on older stuff thanks !
I find the 10w40 helps these older engines not consume as much, any little bit helps and it won't hurt the engine. Been using it for years. Thanks for watching!
Yes the heat range of the 10w30 and 10w40 are very close and the extra viscosity of the 40 weight just helps on lubrication and less loss than the 30 wieght. Interestingly enough Kawasaki which is the premo engine in my opinion calls for 10w40
Wow thanks for the tip!!!!! I need to do that to mine!!!
Works great Rick, thanks for watching!
ALWAYS a thumbs up !
Thanks for watching!
Great tip Jake if you go to the store where they sell the John Deere’s even though they’re brand new that oil drain tube is loose
Yea that's sad, they're definitely not built like they used to be. Hard to find quality anymore.
Thanks Jake very good tip brother 👍
Thanks for watching!
Nice fix!!
Thanks for watching!
That's a true mechanic's hack. Thanks Jake. I do not completely agree on the 10w40 but then again I'm a little nutty when it comes to oil for air cooled engines. 😊
Yea and that's fair, some have criticized me over my use of automotive detergent type oil instead of using a non detergent sae30 type oil but in my opinion I've found it best to just change the oil regularly and there won't be any issues. Thanks for watching!
@EliminatorPerformance I'm sure briggs says to use detergent oil.
Using automotive oil is no issue and even recommended by some engine manufacturers. Full synthetic oils delivering better heat resistance than conventional oils.
Great stuff as always, Jake.
I used Harvey Seal on my drain tube years ago. But the thread locker idea kicks ass.......
Never heard of that stuff, works good?
@@EliminatorPerformance Yeah. It’s a plumbing sealer, but it’s impervious to just about any chemical, including jet fuel.
Guys also use it to seal high pressure air fittings. 😎
That is a great idea to do that to keep the oil leak in check
Thanks for watching!
@@EliminatorPerformance your welcome Jake and the fan is a great idea for your shop.helps to keep you cool on those hot summer days 😉
👍👍👍.Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Nice job .power tools ? Hand tools . Thanks
Could be done either way, thanks for watching!
Kinda looked like the socket you used on the oil drain tube turned the drain cap to the open notch position, might want to check that .😊
Yea I went over everything after the video, also fixed up the fuel line clamp. Thanks for watching!
Thought it was cold year round in Canada. would have never thought you use A/C and fans guess i have been watching to many movies.
Quite hot here right now, thanks for watching!
It has been extremely hot and humid with weekly heat warnings so this fan does a great job of cooling both the shop and ourselves. Jake actually had it on number one speed and there are three. On high it will blow the hair off your head.
use a impact at your own risk...
As you noticed I am 75 years old , my Pension will not pay the bill those people would charge,/ I have been a person who work and fixed everything myself all my life, I will figure something out on my own, I just thought you might have an idea I could use, thanks for the reply
Apart from a shaft seal I can't be certain, I don't work on transmissions. Tayrl Fixes All would be a good person to ask!
How well does the loctite work on oily threads? Shouldn't they be clean and dry?
It works good, gel thread locker is the best but this stuff seeps into the block and seals them nicely. Ideally yes, you want to remove as much oil as possible, but I haven't had these come loose doing it like this.
What about the oil on the threads inside, will it effect the thread locker .
In my experience I haven't found it to be an issue doing it this way. A little bit of oil will definitely be on those threads, so as I (and others) have mentioned, tilting the mower a bit would definitely help. Thanks for watching!
Nice job do you know of any lawn mower graveyards in Canada that ships I'm looking for a deck from my John Deere 100 series
Nothing really that comes to mind
There is a Small Engine Parts graveyard in Lindsey Ontario
@@waynestefinashen239 can you send me an address or phone number
I use it if I’m working on engine, rest of the time I use Teflon tape
Yes that'll work just make sure it's the yellow oil and gas resistant Teflon tape!
@@EliminatorPerformance Excellent point there Jake
George Here from New Brunswick Canada I bought a 26 HP craftsman ride on lawn mower from sears in 2011, my hydr static transmission leaks around where the leaver that you pull when you want to move the machine inside your shop witout starting it , I bought a gasket that fits over the lever next to the case in the transmission case but it did not stop the leak The transmission takes 20-50 motor oil/ I have checked I have not seen any of these mowers around,, I was wondering if you had any ideas to how I can fix my problem ,/ I am 75 years old , any help would be appreciated
Sorry George but we rarely work on transmissions here in Canada. You might have better luck taking it to a reputable small engine repair shop and having them diagnose it. You'll pay the price, but usually it's best to leave it to the professionals when it comes to the transmissions. They're just too expensive when things go wrong.
Hi Jake, would this work for snowblowers too? I usually just use vice grips and a wrench, so it doesn't turn out on me.
Yes, I have a video on that! ua-cam.com/video/ZAhZ9ZGoTbc/v-deo.html
Ty Jake!!! Keep up the GREAT work.
He splooges the red stuff on the treads or he gets the leaks again
It's never coming loose again, hopefully lol thanks for watching!
One might uy a d use a product called sealall like it says sealall .😊.
When you are finished cutting you lawn; please wash your mower deck!
Yes definitely, I try to tell all my customers this. Thanks for watching!
Good point George but viewers should check their manual because some of the self propelled mowers say to never wash with water for example the clutch style blade engagement on Honda mowers.
At EP we scrape them down and sometimes wire wheel clean them , then we apply a thin film of Rust Cure 3000 if the deck is starting to rust.
