  • In 2011 we bought a 1947 Allis-Chalmers "G" Cultivating Tractor and converted it into an Electric Tractor. This video shows us marking our onion set rows so that we will be able to cultivate with the G and stay ahead of the weeds on our Certified Organic CSA farm. www.redwiggler.org

Well in mexico we have converted five 7610 new hollan tractors to electric since the year 2000, and they are running perfectly an verry powerful. More than what they were in diesel.

Electric makes sense for a tractor since you have instant response.

    very wise methode of planting.
I suscpect you change ground what is grassed with planted every few years :)

I get it being green and using electric motor to be eco friendly. Is there a way to boost the output on this. to get ya a little bit more power. I also have an Idea, What if you made a roof of solar panels that could provide shade in summer, shelter from rain, and to also charge the batteries, granted it wont add much life on the batteries, but if done right when you park tractor, it could keep it charged up and ready to go the next time. Also just wanna say great job on it. I love the old G;s

Or when you run the batteries down out in the far end of your field. Solar jump start, if you will.
To be honest, this thing is as useless as tits on a chicken. 🙄

Allis Chalmers actually made a fuel cell powered tractor in 1950s experimental model. Anyone with even the slightest knowledge of engineering understands that an electric motor puts out 100% torque at stall or zero rpm...blows away gas or diesel...that's why electric motors are often used on trains and ship propulsion systems with either nuclear or oil fired boilers to drive steam turbine gen sets like the GE LM 2500 etc. Don't listen to these negative comments by ignorant critics...New Holland just released their fuel cell electric tractor. I think someone should design a hybrid with an auxiliary engine to move machine also like Prius . Shalom

Batteries don't last very long either, the most you can expect is 7 years, and the lead ore mining isn't cheap. I must have 24 to 26--12 volt batteries in equipment now. Keeping up with equipment batteries that are not used all winter is no fun. Shalom

100%torque at stall is also where the inehrit fault with electric motors because they are developing very little horse power. It is simple physics. While a diesel engine will develop torque rise as the engine speed is slowed. On the farm we had alternator motor and in constant load applications like running a grain dryer fan it was fine, but throw it on th eforage blower and you were forever unplugging the thing because as soon as there was a little extra and you started loosing RPM it was game over. If you check out autonomus traactor coorperation that would be the reason they use 400HP motors on some thign that only has a 200 hp engine.

....los ingenieros de la nueva generación deberían hacer la mejor propuesta.

    POSIBLE. !!

You're kidding me now the tree huggers are ruining something as sacred as a good old Allis-Chalmers

They're not ruining it. If your collecting and restoring that's one thing, but if your going to use it daily through growing season trying to maintain and keep an 80 year old engine design is another matter. They were Contental flat head four cylinders that put out 9 hp. So how much power and torque does an electric powered conversion put out? Plus no motor oil, gasoline, ignition system, carburetor, radiator, engine coolant, water pump, electric starter and alternator. So now you have a D.C. motor running on 12-24volt, with a reastat, virtually silent, no fuel, or exhaust, and flat heads aren't the cleanest burning engines.
Personally I think it makes a lot of sense.
I have a 77 Datsun 620 pickup with 360k miles that I've thought about giving to my granddaughter. But I've decided to convert it to electric, no immisions, or poor milage or trying to maintain a 45 year old engine. But she can drive a classic still.

Hmm, didnt even go in the dirt, lets see you convert a John Deere 4900 series an up then go break ground for the yearly planting, electric does not produce anywhere near enough torque to pull a tiny 10 foot chisel or even a disk through settled ground..

Electric motors can have immense torque. It would be very easy to build a super strong tractor with electric motors that would outperform any diesel tractor with the same torque on the market. The problem is getting enough battery capacity to enable it to run for 8 - 10 hours without recharging. For a small tractor on a small farm, where you work only 2 - 4 hours on tiny fields between other chores, this is much less of a problem.

It's obviously not a major tillage tractor so why compare apples and oranges? The description says very clearly he is marking rows for onion sets. Looks like a pretty serious tractor for it's intended purpose.
