    As a pilot with real world time in a turbine duke, the number one rule/skill to remember and develop is powering back on takeoff engine failure, even post rotation. This thing has so much power on takeoff and losing an engine will see asymmetrical thrust spin you into the ground in no time. It’s killed more than a few pilots. Power back, then feather. You’ll have more than enough power after.

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  2 місяці тому +5

      Thank you for the insight! Could you also share some info for setting takeoff thrust? How precisely do you actually set it?

    • @GaryMCurran
      @GaryMCurran 2 місяці тому +4

      Sounds a lot like an MU-2. Not exactly the same thing, but lack of roll control in the Mitsubishi. A lighter airframe and gobs of power added to asymmetrical thrust does not a good outcome make.
      But, I need to ask, really, how often does a PT-6 fail on takeoff?

    Truly great demonstration/review flight, thank you! These Dukes are all so well modeled that the immersion *almost* gets to something that we simmers have the luxury of ignoring - operating and maintenance cost. Maybe it's just me but the combination of the sounds, vibrations, switch motions, all of it together is so good that I found myself thinking stuff like "oh man, if this de-icer fails to actuate what's THAT going to cost to fix?" So much 1970s technical sophistication crammed into such a small machine that uses SOOO much fuel, it's got to cost a bloody fortune just to keep it working! And sure enough, the real world Duke is a huge money pit reserved for only those with very deep pockets! That we can fuel and fix these Black Square versions by pushing a couple buttons is the grand blessing of simulation!

    Duke's always have a sense of depravity for me! Back in the 90's the only maintanance customer who had a Duke (piston version) was a brothel owner and the interior of the plane looked just like that! The fluffy red carpet & stuff gave it a Jackie Brown movie vibe. 😂 Till this release for MSFS, I wasn't aware of a PT6 variant. The PT6 startup sound is nicely modelled though! True to life to a King Air or PA-42 startup!

    Thank you. I'm a Private Pilot, although my medical is long since expired and probably can't be renewed. I also have some financial limitations right now, so flying is not something I would expect to be doing any time in the near future. I don't have the latest flight sim (I need to build a new computer for that), so I'm not flying MSFS right now, either. Having said all that, this Duke is amazing. I saw the piston Duke on another channel yesterday, and it was an enjoyable 'flight' with you today in the Turbine Duke. When Rocket Engineering first introduced the Royal Turbine Duke, it was really expensive and I never thought there would be a market for it, but Darwin Conrad, the founder of Rocket Engineering (who does the conversion) has a 1981 with 90 hours since conversion for less than $1M, and there's another one at less that $1.2 million. Good prices in today's market.
    Anyway, even though I am not current, and do not have the latest MSFS, I truly enjoyed this video. I would love to see a 'glass cockpit' version. The Garmin G500/600TXi is certified for the airplane but I can't seem to find a sim version of either. :(

    • @musiqtee
      @musiqtee 2 місяці тому +3

      @@A330Driver Yes, of course it is. But this single paying passenger looked at the V/S, not the cabin climb rate. It’s hidden behind the FO - and he has a terrible (!) cold from the earlier flight in the piston duke…🤪
      (No, I won’t admit that I forgot this plane is pressurised…🧐)

    • @bikeguy3034
      @bikeguy3034 2 місяці тому

      Hate to be 'That Guy' but reducing pressure while climbing poses no problems at all for human ears, as they release pressure easily with no impediments. It is the increase in pressure while descending that causes the problems due to the design of the ear, low pressure area gets trapped and produces great pressure on ear drum as it tries to equalise. :)
      Always clear you ears early and often while descending to prevent discomfort - as once the pressure builds up to pain level (for whatever reason - small ear canal, cold etc) it is virtually impossible to relieve it without climbing again.
      Saying that - it is no problemm if the aircraft 'out-climbs' the cabin altitude, as once you reach max diff the cabin will just start climbing at the same rate as the aircraft, which is no big deal as you usually climb slower as you get higher anyway.
      Again it is in descent that there is a problem - if you out-descend the cabin then again it will start descending same rate as the aircraft (so the outside pressure doesn't exceed pressure in cabin - aircraft fuselage not designed to handle negative PD!)- which will greatly increase difficulties with ears! The P-3 I used to FE in was fully manually controlled for all pressurisation - so you had to fully manage it manually up and down.
      As an aside - doesn't get anywhere close to a test flight on a 744 - 6 people total with 10k per tank...VVI pinned at 6,000'/min (so actually climbing faster than that!) lol

    As someone who has been deeply involved in flight instruction for many years I would like to compliment you on the technique you use with your tutorials.
    A great mistake many make when giving a tutorial like this ( involving video as well as audio) involves speed of speech. Because video progresses at a constant rate there is a HUGE tendency for the "teacher" to allow the voice input to be much faster than the ability of the viewer to absorb. The result is that the viewer is constantly "behind" what's being discussed. The viewer is out of sync with the tutorial. You avoid this. VERY good technique.
    I could go much deeper into this but that risks getting into the pedantic area.
    So I'll just say, "Very nice tutorials from you."

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  2 місяці тому

      Hi, I typically first decide on the type of flight I want to do, say for example something scenic, something with weather, something with challenging approaches, etc.
      Based on that decision I check which addons I have available and how the conditions meet the expectations for the flight. I tend to say 99% of all times it's just the airports themselves that make the route for me, say because of particularly nice sceneries, new addons that I want to showcase, etc.

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  2 місяці тому +9

      On top of that there's a few more reasons though:
      1) I really don't like just hitting keyboard or joystick buttons. I much prefer pressing things in the cockpit. It just adds to the feeling of being there versus playing a video game.
      2) Especially for videos people just need to see what I'm doing to be able to keep track. For instance I could use my miniFCU to run the AP in the A320, but then I'd make it hard for people to keep track of it, creating confusion as to what are mode reversions and which modes I actually engage.

      The Duke's are a bit newer and thus a bit more advanced. I would probably go for them, but that is not to say that the TBM is not a very fine airplane as well. Both are excellent and if there's one reason why I'd go for the Dukes it's really just that they are a newer release.

    • @BaptiseLeGrand
      @BaptiseLeGrand 2 місяці тому +1

      Another big thing (for me at least) are the sounds. The TBM uses the default MSFS turbine soundset from the stock TBM940, which is a little subpar. For the Turbine Duke, on the other hand, Blacksquare have recorded a fully custom soundset from the real plane, which really boosts immersion I think!

    122 GPH in cruise. Fuel guzzler. A DC-3 burns 90 GPH. After reading about how Beech made the Duke slower than it could have been, that tarnished it's image to me. It was slowed down by 30kts. so it wouldn't exceed the cruise of the King Air, for sales reasons. Looking at it, that long sloping nose, which gives it a nice appearance, must act like a speed brake of sorts. Too bad, but I suspect a nose more the shape of a Barons might be what would be more aerodynamically clean on it.
