The fact that Kendall in his birthday was wearing Gucci and that jewelry, portrays exactly his desperation to impress. Just like the new rich or the pretentious people
No I think he was doing that more as a caricature rather than feeling the actual need to impress. To him, it’s more like a costume than an outfit. Most of the times he’s dressed very quiet, so I don’t think dressing up that way is his way of impressing people. He’s been around old money long enough to know better.
Succession’s costume designer deserves an Emmy for every season. As someone who has worked in that type of luxury fashion for years (and my mother before that as I was growing up), I can really notice all of the nuances and it’s delightful. Just want to add, magazines might have popularized it recently but “quiet luxury” is not a trend. It’s been a historical way for old money to distinguish itself from the mercantile class for centuries.
And what the Roys wear is not quiet luxury at all. They are new money, who flaunts their wealth with designer clothes. Old money & quiet luxury is the Pierce family
Logan’s sweater has more history than just being a part of the old money aesthetic. They hail from the Irish coast, knit for fishermen. I feel like it was partially a nod to his heritage partially. They were also super popular in New England in the 80’s and 90’s, very WASP-y which is why they show up in the new money aesthetic.
You have a keen eye! One small addition to your comment if I may, the Irish technically isn’t WASP(white Anglo-Saxon Protestant), but nowadays that term can be very misused when younger people talk about fashion aesthetics! :)
@@harriet.z She didn't actually say that Irish was WASP. She correctly stated that this knitwear originates in Ireland, and also that they were popular among WASP types in New England, which is true.
As an academic I've been in contact with some super rich people that dress in this "quiet luxury" type of fashion. Usually they're just trying to fit in the intelectual aesthetic sporting tweed blazers (think about the Price family in the show). However I had this one professor... Man his style came off as mockery to us. He was not Just uber rich, he had old money, like, european royal family type of old money. Yet, he would do his lectures in grease stained jeans and ragged shirts, like the university he was enrolled in wasn't good enough for his time (something he would point out, actually). It was like his own inside joke with himself: "look at my shirt full of holes and arm pit stains, I'm like one of you, peasants". Anyway, thank you for coming to this Ted talk and remember you can dress expensive, casual and not come off slime and gross!
Yes! During my PhD I met this guy who used to wear old T-shirts with literally holes in them. At the beginning I thought he was a weirdo in a good non pretentious way, or that he was overdoing the "I don't care about clothes" attitude of the scientific community. Then he said he used to not bring anything with him when he travelled, but a bunch of money in his pockets. That was weird. And, finally, we found out he was the son of super wealthy parents. Since then, I don't necessarily consider T-shirts with holes non-pretentious 😆
I would also add an honorable mention to Gerri, who didn’t outfit repeat a single time the entire show and she herself had some pretty expensive pieces including brands like Scanlan Theodore and other age/status appropriate outfits - not to mention her jewelry was always spot on. I laughed when I saw Tom’s Moncler vest.
This was so interesting and well researched! I love fashion and often questioned the simple fashion choices thinking that wealth can’t buy style. But this video put so much more perspective on how decisive these duller fashion choices are. It’s almost like camouflage to convey that they’re an everyday man.
I own a couple of „stealth wealth“ pieces and they are the best pieces i have. Extremely comfortable (except for the cleaning part. They always want their own special spa treatment service in the washing machine lol) I can recommend buying them, but choose timeless pieces, because that way you can wear them for years or even decades. There’s no point in buying high-quality material if you are only wearing it for 1 year and then it’s out of fashion again only for it to collect dust in your drawers.
Right! And of all of these series about rich people Succession did best! It shows exactly how wealth isn't just what you wear, but how you present yourself and what you wear to the world.
I think a lot of people don’t realize how much of a different mindset wealthy people have compared to average people. Usually they don’t care at all what other people think about them (fashion choices included). They don’t spare the mental bandwidth for prestige and image; they’re too busy building wealth. They will outsource those decisions or don’t bother. Comfort will triumph over image because this class can’t be annoyed or distracted by discomfort.
I think a lot of this is like, "quiet Luxury" is literally just wearing clothes you afford. If your owning $15Billion of housing for a year... $55-900 is just not even on the radar. it doesn't make much of a dent in the ultrarich accounts. There are stores that are affordable for them. $1200 is closer to $12 or $45 for us. True a quiet luxury state has arisen to remove the loud luxury that is just embarrassing to the classical individuals with the same amount of wealth.

I enjoyed the video. Greg Hirsch (Nicholas Braun) is a Roy through his mother. She is Logan's niece and the Roy kids first cousin, making Greg their second cousin and Logan's great nephew. I think that Greg may have had a little exposure to wealth. Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) is truly the odd man out (of the family).
I don’t think Tom came from a poor family though. Maybe upper middle class, remember at the wedding when his parents kept reminding everyone that they paid for the wine. I think he grew up with enough money to realize he wanted even more.
@@Sophia-tv7kg Did not mean to imply that Tom came from a "poor" family, although the income is not nearly the level as that of the Roys. I do remember that Tom's Mother and maybe is Father, too, is an attorney. Perhaps, the series will explore a little more about Tom's background as he seems to have survival skills in society's upper echelon that go a little beyond being married to Shiv.

"Quiet luxury that the elite so carefully cultivate" Anyway, I went to school with insanely wealthy people. They were never flashy but always looked better than anyone I had ever seen. What makes these stealth wealth clothes so expensive if not for the obvious flashiness? Are they ethically sourced? Are they particularly durable or comfortable? Are they easy to clean?
The materials used and the skill. A lot of those goods are made by tradesmen and women not factory employees. Like I can tell Logan wears a lot of Aran sweaters. Those are like standard uniform of Old money Americans. They aren't "expensive" but they are hand made and only come from the Aran Islands. It's a) an indicator you value quality b) you're knowledgeable about things outside of where you live. Stealth wealth isn't necessarily about things being expensive per se but choosing items based on their functions and longevity. These clothes are high quality but very conservative. You can literally inspect the weave on these items and feel the difference. The seams are very tight and are less prone to tearing. These are the clothes that years from now end up in consignment whereas fast fashion often ends up in the trash because they're made of thin materials. There was a time when ALL clothing was made with quality but when sweatshops became the norm, this took jobs away from tailors and seamstresses and those jobs became "luxury" if you live in other countries where seamstresses are still a common profession for women, you can still have a wardrobe made from scratch and it won't cost you a lot. Most Americans buy off the rack=poor. That's not true in Ghana or Nigeria where hand made is the tradition.

I think stealth wealth in the context is definitely a marketing term to get poorer people to engage in more conspicuous consumption that in return will actually drive down the prestige of those goods. The more people try the ape the wealthy, the more the wealthy will stop buying those. goods. Everyone knows Gucci and Chanel. Only some know Dubarry or Karen Millen. This even goes down to things like food. Wealthy people are not going out to eat at 5 star restaurants every day. That's not realistic. But their refrigerators at home are comparatively empty. That's because unlike regular people who often stress out over wasting food or taking advantage of a good deal. Rich people buy exactly what they will actually need to eat. I used to visit a lot of my rich friends houses. Their refrigerators weren't full of expired salad dressings and old cracker boxes. Who needs to hoard food when prices don't effect you like that?
Wth. Loro Piana is very much old money. The craftsmanship story of their wool products alone gives them that. The caps can be a piece for targeting new money, but a coat, definitely not. Their craftsmen are renowned for the extremely high quality standards
@@ameliatorres6162 That perception of Loro Piana is largely a result of clever marketing. love this video!!! i don’t have an eye for fashion and this gave me a whole new perspective on the show! love all the intricacies of this show, i learn something new about it every day :)
People only dress to impress if you need to impress others. If you're the richest/most powerful person in the room, you wouldn't need nor care to show off. You give the impression that "stealth weath" is a recent phenomenon - err, definitely not. "Stealth weath" has been the style of the very weathy for many decades.
The watches they wear are carefully chosen for all characters. Def interesting to see as the show progresses because the watches change for each character, like tom going from wearing cartier just like shiv to wearing a very flashy AP royal oak chrono. Or roman wearing simpler and understated watches while kendall having a very broad collection including a 1of1 richard mille in the last season.
…so Stealth Wealth is the updated moniker for Understated or my ultimate fave The Non-Status Statius Symbol. Haven’t had a chance to peek into the show Succession yet but from the looks of it reminds me of my hometown. It’s a very affluent little enclave in the Silicon Valley where most are so low key. Growing up this was the norm, simple but the finest yet focused on fit and form that feels a little utilitarian yet with subtle details of elegance. My staples vary from a few Armani, Kawakubo, Brooks Bros, Banana Republic, James Perse, Yamamoto, Filippa K, lots of Helmut Lang and a slew of cowboy boots!
Random, but does anyone know what brand or the name of that shiny yellow puffer Shiv is wearing in the episode when they go to the retreat. You can only see the hood but i LOVE IT!
Great insight on stealth wealth! Love the show Succession. Just a suggestion, you may want to use a good camera/mic or just wear one to filter out your background noise (volume is low when I airplayed it). Otherwise, keep up the good work!
I always feel a little closer to God when Shiv enters the scene (especially in the newest season). Her style is feminine yet insanely powerful, elegant yet so effortless. Definite goals for my book❤

cool video. even if I were wealthy af, I think I’d still be buying clothing for less than $200. I can’t stand the culture of the uber wealthy, it almost disgusts me, stealth wealth is even more awful than flashy wealth
@@sharontalbot8037I've never met or known anyone as wealthy as the Roy's. I've known some rather wealthy people though. They oftentimes dress in unassuming but very finely made pieces. They don't wear things once and throw them away. One of them, a 40 sth old man that gained weight in the recent years, kept his old suits and handed them to his eldest son. The suits were obviously in great shape, that's the luxury of paying for top quality and caring greatly of your clothes. Not all rich people are showy, and not all of them are wasteful with everything. (That same man I mentioned earlier would spend money as if nothing in restaurants, casinos and the likes. It's just that finely made clothing items that looked good were not something disposable for him)

He understands himself in that facet. In many others, he does not and he’s confused on so many levels, but I think [he’s just going] about his business".
The richest person I know is wearing shoes with scratches and tore up tips. A multimillionaire who has nothing to prove. Just his favorite shoes. Has nice clothes but isn’t a “flashy, look at me” and will wear the same things over and over again. Matter of fact, all his cars are certified used Lexus’. And not the fanciest model either. I used to visit a lot of my rich friends houses. Their refrigerators weren't full of expired salad dressings and old cracker boxes. Who needs to hoard food when prices don't effect you like that?
Loro Piana is very much a brand for the new rich. You won't find many genuine "old money" types wearing $1000 baseball caps - it's just not done.
Loro Piana is an old company but (like everything LVMH touches) they've been transformed into a highly-visible brand which aims to maximize profits at the expense of culture. Its once aristocratic image has been diminished over time.
I wouldnt say it is exclusive anymore. Once the influencers start to wear it.. it is over (the ugly flat shoes).
@@ameliatorres6162 before all the marketing bullshit, Loro Piana and Brunello were popular only among Russian oligarchs and mafia.
Clearly the Roman remains the most elusive with his non-descript clothing
it's not the 1%. it's the 0.001% otherwise, great video!
Your video came up on my recommended, happy I watched!
happy to see you come through, thank you!
Nice video! I dont usually comment but you deserve more subscribers!
love this video!!! i don’t have an eye for fashion and this gave me a whole new perspective on the show! love all the intricacies of this show, i learn something new about it every day :)
This was awesome! I really enjoyed your analysis. 😄
People only dress to impress if you need to impress others. If you're the richest/most powerful person in the room, you wouldn't need nor care to show off. You give the impression that "stealth weath" is a recent phenomenon - err, definitely not. "Stealth weath" has been the style of the very weathy for many decades.
great analysis!! Thanks for sharing this!
Why do you keep looking up in the corner? Perhaps position your teleprompter closer to your camera?
This is a very impressive video! Very well written and so informative. A++ :)
Wealth fashion has been stealth for nearly a century
Cucinelli is pronounced “coo-chuh-neh-lee” lol
should be noted Tom's styles changes as he's embedded more in the family, and in this final season we see him making comments about a girl's bag
Even dress in quiet luxury style if one doesn’t have the wealth behind it. It’s pretty easy to notice when the one starts talking
My staples vary from a few Armani, Kawakubo, Brooks Bros, Banana Republic, James Perse, Yamamoto, Filippa K, lots of Helmut Lang and a slew of cowboy boots!
just here supporting local youtubers
Thank you for this eye-opening breakdown of a quiet layer of this show's storytelling.
Love the content! You killed it with this one!
Random, but does anyone know what brand or the name of that shiny yellow puffer Shiv is wearing in the episode when they go to the retreat. You can only see the hood but i LOVE IT!
Why nothing about Roman?
Money talks, wealth whispers
Great insight on stealth wealth! Love the show Succession. Just a suggestion, you may want to use a good camera/mic or just wear one to filter out your background noise (volume is low when I airplayed it). Otherwise, keep up the good work!
nice work, keep it up!
dont forget awesome jacques Marie Mage sunglasses worn by kendell
I always feel a little closer to God when Shiv enters the scene (especially in the newest season). Her style is feminine yet insanely powerful, elegant yet so effortless. Definite goals for my book❤
didnt she oppress your ancestors personally and hold you back in life personally?
Isnt that the tude towards whitey?
You clearly do not understand the purpose of the show lol
@@lothropstoddardiii6231 You sound like you are afraid of the Black man.
This is a one great video! Hope to see more of this type on your channel :) Maybe you would find it interesting to make similar analysis of other series?
Greg and Tom are what we call “The Disgusting Brothers”
Better if you do a voice over...it is very annoying to watch someone read while they talk. Nice content and voice.
I found this look at this facet of Succession interesting.
Where did you get that gorgeous sweater?
Depop :)
This is awesome that this video blew up so much for such a small channel
Awesome video!
Really great video. You should examine other shows through the fashion lens.
"The Cut" just released a verrrrrry similar story today.
I wonder if this video "inspired" it 🤔
This was really nice!
What an amazing video well done!!
3:53 Contradicts the whole purpose, no?
Loved everything Shiv wore in seasons one and two, but thought her style was a little off in season three somehow.
Although they are really ‘new rich’ & this is displayed by their attitude
cool video. even if I were wealthy af, I think I’d still be buying clothing for less than $200. I can’t stand the culture of the uber wealthy, it almost disgusts me, stealth wealth is even more awful than flashy wealth
Could not agree more! They probably wear it once and throw it out!
It's just that finely made clothing items that looked good were not something disposable for him)
Sounded like someone that isn't rich. The way you see things now will be very different when you become a millionaire. You can't make a certain amount of money without it affecting your mindset in very little and seemingly unobvious ways
Quality does matter when you have money. So I wouldn't shop from Target.
Its not as necessary nowadays but you still need to look the part, especially if you come from a poor background or you will be rejected or mocked.
Leonard Logsdail is NOT the last bespoke tailor in the US. It's not true (just google it and dig deeper). He is one (well known) of them.
her looking up at her notes is distracting but still a great video
oop i've been made it's definitely something I'm still trying to work on so hoping to improve on that!
Hey Malaiya, this was very informative and a great analysis🤞 I would just advise to use a darker background for your personal videos, as atm the picture looks a bit blurr ❤️
great video!
Do you remember when Greg showed his watch to the woman at one of the parties by putting it in front of her and telling her to look at the time?
what a fucking watch!!!! loved the essay/analysis!!!!!!
Bruh I’m legit offended by how horribly u pronounced brunello cucinelli like woah. Great vid tho
That was a cool
Video
Well done 🎉
you'll never be the uber weathly, most people can probably achieve 1M +networth but 100M networth is hard.
Including Naomi Pierce would have been nice…
Yes, love her
Lol everytime I look at one of these vids they bring up Zucks T-shirt and Steve’s turtle neck😂
If you pay attention Logan switched the watch in the box and didn’t give the one that Tom gifted to him
Very interesting video!
This is actually not new. Preppy style has always been understated.
Probably should warn us about spoilers
How the fuck does a stupid cap cost 400 dollars??? WHAAAAAT?
Great analysis of the riches attempt to tone down there ostentation. I wish you'd also talk about the Wardrobe of other characters such as Jerry and Marcia. Also what is the story behind shiv and her very wide pant legs? They're not at all flattering
Great analysis of costume design and character! Loved watching this video!
Roman not concerned with his external appearance? Who would’ve thunk lol
I’ve always found second hand embarrassment and sadness seeing some of my fellow peasants wear clothes and items they think that the wealthy wear.
Why did you quit Roman?
considered talking about Roman up until I read up on what Michelle Matland (the costume designer) had to say about his style in an interview with Vogue Australia.
She said in the article "I think that only Roman probably maintains his exactness, because I think of all of them he’s not concerned, really, with how he looks in that way. He understands himself in that facet. In many others, he does not and he’s confused on so many levels, but I think [he’s just going] about his business".
Good video.
Its just marketing type to sell products from few italian brands
Lanvin is pronounced LAWN- VAHN.
should have mentioned there were spoilers! had to click off now 😂
The richest person I know is wearing shoes with scratches and tore up tips. A multimillionaire who has nothing to prove. Just his favorite shoes. Has nice clothes but isn’t a “flashy, look at me” and will wear the same things over and over again. Matter of fact, all his cars are certified used Lexus’. And not the fanciest model either. His house is outrageous and huge, but hey…he is still a down to earth guy.
The way you butchered Brunello Cucinelli hurts
Boy, right time right place, huh?
That cap looks no more than $25.00 if that
Slay what you wanna slay💀
Brunello cuschunili😂
excuse my butchered pronunciation 😅
Please fix your sound!!!
Thats not the way to properly pronounce Cucinelli. The first C is a hard C, not CH.
