I use a dewalt 60 grit amzn.to/2vOfXNH as my go to. But have also used the Lenox Metalmax diamond discs amzn.to/2vwsFFK to give a serrated texture to the blade(some factory ones come this way).
AWESOME TEE SHIRT I'm wearing was provided by Rodder Files. If you enjoy classic cars, check out his videos: / strtrodder100 and tell him I sent you.

Awesome Shop Shirt ;) nice Hill Climb brotha
Hey Thanks.
Rodder Files Agree, that rock climb was fun!! Awesome practical advice as always re tin snip sharpening!
What about when the spring breaks . How would you replace the spring
Now, that's how you make a 'how to' video. Short and to the point.
No music, no vlog, nothing about his breakfast or how many times he used the washroom today.
Keep up the good work!
Hey Thanks.
Thanks for turning down girder volume we all know what that sounds like.
Haha. Yeah, that's never fun to listen to.
Sometimes grinding those small serrations off on aviation snips will cause them to slip on the metal. I would suggest trying to grind the side without the serrations first and see if they work side and not both sides right away.
I pass the Lenox Diamond blade down the edge quickly and it recreates the serrations. But, I notice zero difference in how they cut or handle. I have identical Wiss snips in most of the models and some came with serrations and some didn't. Looks like the new ones don't have serrations.
They will only slip if you have an uneven edge. I cut 0.29 1-1/4 zinc coated steel strapping constantly throughout the day and find that taking off the serrations only makes the snips slip off if you hamfist sharpening them.
GOOD advice, I kept that one to myself and took home all the dull tin snips from work and fixed them and have never had to buy any.
I like the way you think.
save all your old cutting discs and use your snips to cut slices off them that keeps you snips very sharpe best wishes from the uk
I use a flap disc to sharpen everything from mower blades to scissors. Only thing I don't use a flap disc on is knives.
They remove a good amount of material fast. I like to wear out my cheap abrasive grinding discs on my mower blades though.
As a sheet metal guy myself i use the crap outta wiss snips. Only brand to use. Milwaukee came out with a pair but the wiss opens a bit farther which makes them more usable.
That's what I'm used to and what feels good in my hand. A few people mention Midwest being great, but I don't think I've tried them ( I have quit a few pairs in random tool boxes/vehicles).
Just wanted to say, I watched this and I don't have a grinder like that, so I used a small hand sanding stone with a diamond side and it worked (presumably) just as well as this. Can't say for sure of course but just wanted to throw the idea out there for anyone who may only have a sharpening stone handy as you can follow this method just going in small circles with one
Hello Moe, Thanks for this. I was just about to purchase a new set of Snips as mine a very dull. I will give this a go. Cheers from Queensland Australia. Mark.
I hope it comes in handy. Thanks
I pick up antique wiss 61/2 for our metal shop sometimes it helps to flatten the mating surfaces at the bolt ,if you get a gap between the blades. Amazing how long they last
Makes sense to flatten the bolt area.
Definitely easier than I thought also loved the ending
Thanks. Fun to get out and beat on the truck once in a while.
I would recommend Midwest snips if you're buying new and if you're cutting big sheets or awkward cuts check out the "upright" models.
I have a set or two of Midwest and I like them. I find them very similar to the WISS, but those are what I'm used too. I do need a set of upright ones, so maybe I'll pick them up in the Midwest brand amzn.to/2wsrNAJ .
Love the T-shirt. He has a great channel. Nice save on the tools, thanks again for passing along some knowledge. Okay, that big old Ford rock climbing was pretty impressive.
Thanks Man. Yeah, the Ford likes to stretch her legs once in a while. Gotta take it slow so I don't spend my day fixing broken stuff though.
I'm a novice so I don't know what device you're holding. Can you please give me specifics on both the device and wheel so I can buy the right items?
Another item on the things to do list! Serious off road driving going on there...
Thanks.
To repeat AA AA, "No music, no vlog, nothing about his breakfast or how many times he used the washroom today." What a wonderful way to educate people!
Thanks I'm glad you like liked it.
Nice, Moe...missed hearing from you. I've sharpened scissors with a file but never thought about using a flap disc on my tin snips.
It's been a busy summer. Feels like forever since I've posted something.
Just commenting to up your stats. Great video.
Thanks for the support.
great share moe ! Now I need to get out there and get the bunch from my Grandfather sharp .. Thumbs up!!
The old ones tend to be some of my favorites.
About the hill climb in the end, is this the same path WhistlinDiesel took with the Toyota pickup? Certainly looks like it.
Same general location(Moab) but different hill.
Excellent video and especially the rock crawling, more on that if at all possible. ;-)
Huge thumbs up.
It's always a fun time taking the truck rock crawling.
Will try this easy way of sharpening when noise from the grinder is not a problem.
Thanks.
Thank you. I have a nice set of bluepoint drill bits and the smaller ones are getting dull. I was wondering how you keep your drill bits sharp
I have a few methods I use. I do own an drill doctor, some other random brand, and a Blue Point drill bit sharpening jig. But for the past many years I've just be doing them all freehand.
Another quality "Save a Fortune" video. Thank you 😉👍
Thanks.
I love the tailgate on your 70's Ford. It's in keeping with you UA-cam handle!
Only a Slick fan would notice that. It came with a wooden tailgate when I got her. Had an old beat up 65-66 gate hanging around and sure enough it bolts right on. Gotta love old Fords for that.
Moe, you have the best endings in your videos of anybody I watch, thumbs up.
Thanks Robb.
Good video. Funny, in aviation we don't really use the "aviation snips", the teeth on those leave really awful edges! Grinding them off is a good idea.
How can one repair snip when the cutting ends are not touching each other. There is a gape between the cutting mouth
I was starting to wonder were you went. Very helpful video btw.
Summer has been really busy.
Thanks for info Nice rock climbing clip at end that is Ford tough
Thanks. Yeah, the Ford likes to stretch her legs once in a while.
Iv wondered for a LONG FRIKIN TIME how to sharpen tin snips ..... & just as I Thought ~ there's nothing to it.
Thank You
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Midwest?
I've had a pair before and a lot of guys like them. I like Wiss because that's what I'm used to.
mark the edge with a permanent marker , so you see your cutting flat as it removes the marks equally if its a perfect grinding line
Thanks for posting this informative video. cheers !
Thanks.
What’s the model number on the old craftsman(made in U.S.A) snips with the yellow handle?
Another useful bit of education. That's why I love your videos.
Hey Thanks. -Moe
I've sharpened scissors before on a belt sander. Never tried sharpening tin snips before.
The tin snips get so sharp you can cut paper with them.
Reminds me that i need to sharpen mine. I normally keep mine sharp enough to cut saran wrap.
That's sharp.
fantastic..im going to try it.. ps..i bought a tire changer you taught me how to change my own tires n save the black steel rims ..thankyou..
Awesome. Thanks.
If you don't mind me asking, what is it that you do for your full time work. Just curious and not judgemental.
Great job another great, useful and easy fix
Thanks Man.
can metal snips be used on 29 gauge sheet metal roof?
It'll cut 29 gauge no problem.
What if you tried cutting 60 grit sandpaper with them to sharpen, would that work?
I wish.
And here I am every 10 years buying a new pair of snips, never thinking to sharpen the blades! Cool..
I keep ending up with other peoples throw away ones. I don't know if I've ever bought a new pair in my life.
'great video, I've got a few tin snips
'a drop of oil in the right spot can only help
thanks for posting this
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Thank you! I have everything I need already in my garage but idk what I’m doing probably still gonna mess it up or hurt myself, hope my dog knows how to call 911 😎
Nice tip
Thanks.
Worked a treat... many thanks 😁
Awesome video, thanks. That 4x4 clip at the end was epic!
Thanks Man.
Sharpening is such a useful skill! I just finally became competent doing chainsaws. Maybe a video would be good for you?
I've done quit a bit of chainsaw chain sharpening and even do a little in an old video.
I use my little 2x42 belt sander..
That's a handy tool.
Going up! Pretty cool. Does your dog go with you when you go rock climbing?
I've taken the dog before. They're not to keen on the rock crawling.
Good tips. Couldn't you use a Dremel?
A Dremel would work great.
Good advice as always :-D
I had some snips that looked like your compound ones, but they cut a wavy line.
They cut nicely though :-)
I do really enjoy my long blade tin snips for long straight cuts.
Never sharpen a pair of shears with a grinder. EVER !!! On UA-cam go to "How to sharpen your shears Jerry Kirkpatrick . You have a quality set do it right and it will last along time. Do it wrong and you won't find a pair made that good .This guy helped build the Ford Cobra in the 60s and knows a lot.
If you don't have experience with lapping the faces you will ruin a set of cutters permanently. I have lapped the faces of many cutting surfaces and it is not something the average garage guy can do nor has the proper tools to do so. Lapping is more for things that cut flimsy materials like paper, hair, etc where you need a razor sharp knife edge. He's making the items looser in their housing every-time he sharpens it. Not saying his way doesn't work or isn't right; grinding the top edge gives you the exact same sharp edge in seconds vs hours.
@@sixtyfiveford you have to take them apart and lap the mating surface of the bolt area at the same time, all together. Then the blades are never moved apart. It doesn't take long on a cheap diamond coated sharpening stone from harbor freight.
nice, next break mine will catch it 2.
Thanks.
Thanks. Thought I had to buy new snips.
Midwest snips all day !!!
Good to know, thanks for the info.
Hey Thanks.
Right on dude!
Why would anyone give this a thumbs down???? Looooosers! Great video
Thanks, I'm glad you liked the video.
Digging all the ford sir!
Thanks Curtis. -Moe
You have a vice, you have a file, it takes seconds to sharpen. come on jack show them the safe way!
They're too hard for a file.
@@sixtyfiveford Really? I'm using diamond files if I find it won't cut. Otherwise it works for me. www.amazon.ca/EZE-LAP-600F-Fine-Diamond-Needle/dp/B002RL84C6
A few drops of oil to coat the surface and lube the hinge would be nice.
Oil is always a good idea.
Good advice and love the rock climb!!
Thanks.
Thanks again, as always Moe...
Thanks Ben.
Thanks
Thanks for watching.
Spring washers.
👍👍
Thanks for sharing and take care.
Thanks Ken.
Nice for guide how thanks.
The demonstration part of the video is way too fast. It’s hard to see what you’re doing.
What about the snips with small teeth
You can take them apart all the way and lap the flat sides on a sharpening stone but you have to make sure to include the mating surface of the bolt pivot area or you'll move the blades apart, and you have to make sure to keep it flat, flat, so you don't take more off the edges as you change directions.
Although you say don't touch the flat side, the video seems to show you working on that side, but maybe just an optical delusion!?
Wouldn't do that to that old ford it hard to find parts for the old girl
When I started in sheet metal I was told snips are spelled W I S S, and they were the best. Then, about 6-7 years ago they had to go and change the shape of the jaws which made them much weaker. After the jaw broke on my 3rd set in as many months I gave up on them. These days I find DeWalt tin snips to be a superior product.
I've held the Dewalts in the store but never cut with them. All my WISS have to be 20+ years old now.
Taking a shortcut ?
Heck Yeah!
that's cool
impressive ending
Hey Thanks.
No safety glasses ?? Thanks for your demo !
Nice one - haha who does that anymore - sharpening , love it. Oh ya i'm trying it today. I'm not taking my ford up there. LOL
Thanks and thumbs up.
Thanks Jeff. -Moe
Great video
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
I think a bench grinder would be safer
Thanks. Bravo
Thanks.
I use my Dremel to sharpen my wiss aviation snips
Isn't it great how much better they work when sharpened?
@@sixtyfiveford most definitely
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hey Thanks.
that is NOT how you sharpen scissors
I have never seen anyone throw tools down with such total and utter disregard.
Blind jokes... I get it.
I just file em.
Damn quit thowing shit. Blowing my ears up.
Tough old Ford
She does a decent job.
Midwest snips are far superior to Wiss.
A sharp pair of snips any brand is better than a dull pair.
@@sixtyfiveford cheers to that.
Ford rules!
Heck Yeah.
lol , sweet.
Thanks for watching.
🍻🍻
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
@@sixtyfiveford It's definitely a skill that is being lost.. Thanks for keeping it alive..🍻🍻
Ur little fingers so close I'm a wimp I need gloves
First of all u need offset snips. Those Weis need to go straight in the garbage. Tighten up hoss.
I have offset and every other type of snips out there. Air shears are the only way to go for situations you would need offset snips for.
@@sixtyfiveford oohhh. So ur a sissy. Tighten up Nancy
Zzzzzzz
