The best part is the synth detuning (2:35-3:10). It was common during that era, analog synths could get overheated and detuned. In this occasion, it adds to the bleakness.
The synth is completely out of tune from the very beginning. I love Decades, it is probably the most hauntingly beautiful song by Joy Division but this is an absolute disgrace. Ian Curtis is not the most accurate singer and he is misled by the synth. You have to be tone-deaf to find this live listenable.
@@dajuanitito to be fair, I've also a ARP Omni synth and this has heavy Melos Tape loop echo on it, so it kind of is Modulating, and also heat at a gig can make the tape loop wow and flutter due to heat expansion, but the ARP Omni 2 is a Tragic sounding synth on its own, not sure if interested but I demonstrate this song a few times on my ARP Omni, and you will hear this old Analogue synth does have that modulating type sound
I believe this is the final live performance of Joy Division in Birmingham. Decades was the last song they ever played live. Ian Curtis wrote the set list. Who knows if he knew this would be his last performance.
Here is the set list from their last concert, at the University of Birmingham's High Hall (May 2, 1980): "Ceremony" "Shadowplay" "A Means to an End" "Passover" "New Dawn Fades" "Twenty Four Hours" "Transmission" "Disorder" "Isolation" "Decades" *Encore "Digital"
it was the Melos Echo unit mate , it was a little tape loop cartridge in the back , and when they got hot the tape went slack and slipped etc , they did also have the digital version of the Melos but didnt use it on this performance for some reason
I have always loved Joy Division and Decades is a beautiful track but this sounds awful. So out of tune. To say it is right at the end of their career surely it should have sounded better. it is all over the place.
Horrible English keyboard-driven drivel. The singer is so weak he's barely audible over the crap keyboard playing. I'd almost rather hear the bloody Smiths. lol
First of all, Ian had a debilitating condition that made him ill by the time of this gig. Secondly the keyboards they used were prone to detuning, but they made it added to the dark and bleakness that was their music.
Favorite Joy Division song
me too
the music in this live version is so haunting and beautiful . Intense.
So eerie and yet wonderful
I'll always hold Joy Division close. Guaranteed pure and crushing humility and awe - speaks to sheer essence

ye, I like that. Let's appreciate the soul more then quality
I think it was intentional, makes the song creepier though

@@DavidInSugarLand Wow, what a setlist.
Must have been one of the few occasions Ceremony was played live before Ian died
Best JD song
You know, you could never recreate this sound now. Something unique about the live sound back then.
Why is that?
You could absolutely… A untuned synth, tape recorder, vintage mixer, mics and etc and you’re good
it was the Melos Echo unit mate , it was a little tape loop cartridge in the back , and when they got hot the tape went slack and slipped etc , they did also have the digital version of the Melos but didnt use it on this performance for some reason
Pure perfection and if he had lived they say Joy Division would have been bigger than the Beatles, think about that.!!!
The final round!
Spooky af
eles usavam teclado?
Too fast
this really goes to show that martin hannett WAS joy division - at least everything we love about them
Does Joy Division made Decades just once in live ?
Theres another performance but it hasn't surfaced.
No 3 or 4.
Emerged a new audio last month.
?????????
@@jumofi thanks.. I'll go there now
I'm pretty sure that's a (poor audio) copy off Live in Tokyo.
It's on "Still" album.
Pretty sure JD never played in Tokyo. This is indeed the version from Still.
"Live in Tokyo" GTFO lol
Is this a troll comment?
destroyed

doesnt work for me
Ouch, seriously out of tune
That's part of what so great
matches the mood I think, tho it can hit you as a bit off if you're not in the mood

Most ignorant musical comment I’ve ever seen
