Hi Lesley! I remember learning what the blue jays different calls and sounds meant from your videos awhile ago and I forgot what a lot of them meant. I have heard a whole bunch of them lately at my house and feeders and wanted to remember and learn what the calls meant, like the gurgle bob for instance, I forget what this call means. I checked through a lot of your videos and playlists and for the life of me I can’t find your videos where you explain what the calls mean, I see videos where you show blue jays calls but can’t find the ones with the explanation of what the calls mean, I know they exist though since your channel is where I learned what a lot of the blue jay calls mean in the first place (and unfortunately I just forgot what a lot of them meant ☹️)
Thank you for making this series of videos. I have a Blue Jay I rescued and he/she loves to listen to these and talks back to them. I play them for him often. He will be released soon as his tail is growing back again. Thank you again for sharing these.
Thank you so much for posting this! I'm rehabbing some adorable baby blue jays- and I like to let them listen to calls uploaded on youtube. This is the best quality I've seen in bird calls (:
They are the funnest birds to watch honestly I do not know why some people hate them so much and I'm aware of their "agressiveness" it doesn't bother me and actually makes me laugh. I never see them hurting any of the other little birds they just take over the feeders for a little bit that's all..lol You know what is cute? Watching fledgling Blue Jays cracking open peanuts, so adorable and funny to watch they don't quite have it down.
I just love blue jays, beautiful birds! It's a shame we don't have them here in the Netherlands. And some of the sounds they make are pretty adorable as well. Really nice clips, amazing quality!
I am very happy to hear that this video has helped you with rehabbing a baby blue jay!! I have never rehabbed a baby bird before, it must be quite the committed task, thanks for helping out the birds it isn't a easy world for those wild birds. I liked reading your comment about how the little blue jay is getting on, like attacking crikets and stuff, it must be fun to watch at times! Blue jays are one of my all time fav birds!!
I live in South Carolina , Piedmont and we have many Blue Jays at our feeders every day. I really enjoy your videos. They have a one with nature quality and I have learned a lot from you, Thanks
Thank you for your very kind comment. It's a pleasure to share videos like this to people like you who really do enjoy them. Those blue jays have a lot of different calls, what I've covered in the video isn't close to all of them. For the past two yrs I've been faithfully observing them and just today I heard yet another new call I hadn't heard before. I like how you described one of the calls as a babies rattle being squeezed, I've never thought of that before but I do now. Lol
My gosh...Just came home from work and....oh forget it. Listening to these beautiful blue jays on this channel...gives me sudden peace and a natural feeling inside. Thank you so much. ❤️from the Netherlands
What a great collection of blue jay noises! I love watching them and recording their activities as well, always hoping to hear one with a new, unique sound. I spend a lot of money on peanuts, but it's well worth it. Thanks for the post!
Beautiful video. I was indeed also thinking there were several birds in the garden with all the different sounds, but it was just one, the Blue Jay ! Amazing bird ! ;-)
Yes ! I have some coming to my patio, getting peanuts and bread. I made some pictures and put them in a video. It is called "Geais bleu et écureuil par Fanny" if you want to watch :-)
Yeah it does sound kind of eerie too. It was mating season at the time that I took that shot, and they were both males. Blue jays are pretty easy to tame, even the wild ones that I know I have managed to tame.
Thats cool that they remind you of your childhood years. The Jay call at 1:29 is the most recognizable one of all their calls I think and I bet hearing it really brought you back. Thanks for your comment I hope the video was enjoyable to watch.
That is so awesome to hear! And I'm delighted to know that one of my most fav birds ever, is listening to my video of Blue Jay calls and sounds. Hope it helps them and best of luck to you with the rehabbing of the little adorable babies! :)
1:28 this is basically all that we hear every morning. Maybe somebody told him he was a rooster, so he has to wake up the entire neighborhood? We live a block from the train tracks but the bird can drown out even locomotive emergency brakes. 8I
Heh, jays are quite active birds. Just the other day I witnessed two jays in a scrap at my feeder; the usual male jay, Periwinkle, was approached by another male whom I have named Turq. When Periwinkle wasn't paying attention, Turq knocked him right off the feeder! I then watched them fight for a bit. Periwinkle also has a mate I call Skye that sometimes comes with him to the feeder, or by herself. It's also amusing to watch the jays break open nuts and seeds (sunflower seeds in my case.)
Better quality on this one really makes the colors stand out well. Nicely done! Also nice to see the Blue Jay makes a few other calls I've hard outside before.
Awesome video! I love birds! Corvids are my favorite. Their beauty is only matched by their intelligence. It's funny watching you feeding them peanuts. I have a family of Blue Jays that visit me daily. The parents bring their 3 kids with them for their daily bag of peanuts. LOL Once in a while a Cardinal and a crow or two will show up also. It's amazing to see so much wildlife in the middle of a major urban area. We also have Peregrine Falcons and Red Tailed Hawks. They are also amazing but when they show up usually something dies. Its the cycle of life but not my favorite part.
+Skorpio Thank you kindly for the nice comment and for watching. Corvids are one of the best birds, love those birds. The family of blue jays you get visiting you must love you, lol. A whole bag of peanuts, my jays would love it if I gave them a whole bag in one day, little brats, lol. I love them though. It's never fun, at least not for me, to see any animal losing its life even though I know it is the circle of life. It's just brutal. Have a great day
As far as I can remember there was no danger around, usually when there is danger around they make a much more obnoxious jay sound then that. It was at the start of the breeding season when I captured that scene so I think it may have been a territory thing.
WE HAVEN'T HAD BLUE JAYS IN YEARS. ONE CAME TO THE FEEDER YESTERDAY AND GOT ME GOOGLING. THATS HOW I FOUND YOUR VIDEOS. HAD FORGOTTEN HOW MUCH FUN THESE BIRDS ARE TO WATCH. HOPE THEY START COMING BACK TO MY GARDEN.
After watching these videos of Blue Jays eating peanuts I put some out on my back deck by the bird feeder. The peanuts were gone in less than two hours lol
Your welcome, glad to have helped you to understand the Blue Jays a bit more now when they come to your yard. Thanks for the nice comment on my video, I have many more videos on Blue Jays - and other birds as well- if you'd like to check them out just check through my channel there're plenty there to keep you entertained for a while. Some are in a short documentry style form, you'd probably like them plus you will learn more about Blue Jays.
I am rehabbing a jay & getting close to letting him go. My jay loves watching your vid. He stops everything when I play it. I use it when he gets unruly and won't fly back. He ALWAYS comes flying when I play this! He loves these other jays. He's stopped screeching for me so much since he sees the others are cleary not calling their mamas, instead he's delighted to attack crickets I throw in and pecks like crazy at branches in his little atrium. Thanks for helping me rehab a little blue jay!
Hey Thank You! I'm really glad to know that you enjoyed the video. Blue jays have such a wide variety of calls and sounds, making it a challenge to be ready at all times to capture the sounds out in the wild. It would be great if you could get that sound recorded, I would love to hear it, maybe it will turn out to be one of the ones I've heard on the rare occasion but never can get a recording of.
also, we had a cat, circa 1975 named cedric, who was a big tom about 20some pounds of muscle. he was bonded to my oldest brother who kept his bedroom window open for cedric's free coming and going. cedric was a legendary hunter. well, one day the cat was feeling particularly affectionate toward my brother, so he captured live a large adult male blue jay and carried it through the window and presented it, let it go. chaos ensued. I love these birds.
Thanks glad you enjoyed watching the blue jay. I have been seeing people posting that name as you did Mordecai on my blue jay videos, and hadn't the slightest clue who everyone was referencing until just now I decided to look into it. I never knew there was a cartoon with a blue jay character in it, I have to check that show out now, lol.
I'm out on my deck right now giving out peanuts. The Jays hear the sound of them dropping on the ground, and come swooping in. So cool. Unsalted unshelled peanuts of course.❤❤❤❤ Thankyou for all your hard work,Lesley.❤❤❤
Thank you for your answer that was really helpful. Now I know more about the adorable blue jays that comes everyday. And beautiful video! It was like a professional's!
I love blue jays there my favorite bird then ravens and crows I guess I love corvids they are the most amazing entertainment you can find and smart . My jays are like b 52 bombers when they come to the feeders it's like a busy airport I enjoy there screams and they are very talented flyers I can't imagine anyone not liking this birds I love my 30 jays all of them
In this area we have Steller's Jays. They have a whole crazy range of vocalizations, including one that we think of as "rusty lawn-mower" because it sounds exactly like a push-mower when you haven't oiled the blades. I wonder what that call is used for. Sadly, developers have completely flattened the neighboring properties to squeeze six houses onto them (40+ trees taken down). The crows have moved in. Most of the jays are gone now, perhaps due to loss of habitat. We miss them.
So awesome that they have so many different sounds. I need to lear which sounds mean what. I play blue Jay sounds over a speaker to let them know that their breakfast peanuts are served.
:) Yes, they love catching peanuts, even in the air which I made a video of. If you'd like to see it here is a link ua-cam.com/video/riotcOd45K8/v-deo.html
Thanks alot :) That is a really kind comment. I don't use blinds, they're really familar with me and don't mind me being around. Also bringing food to offer always helps too. All of these videos are done out in the forest around my home nieghborhood, luckily for me I live in a small town of only 20,000 people so there is alot of forest just out your back door. It allows me to be close to them out in their natural setting which I like. I'm happy that you like enjoy them :)
Well thank you very much, it was a bit of work, over a period of a 2 months, with trying to get some good footage. I'm glad to know that you enjoyed it :)
Thank you Renée for the kind comment, I adore Blue Jays actually all jays and I'd love to see the Eurasian Jay. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, I have lots other videos on Blue Jays if you ever want to take a look through my channel.
Thank you for the nice comment. By the way I checked out your videos, I love the Cardinal video we don't get them here and I love your cute little puppy.
I know hey I love that part too, so quick. I've been watching the fledgling Jays try to handle a whole peanut and it is pretty funny because they are no where near as skilled at it as the adults are. They drop them all the time.
Thank you a lot for the kind comment and for realizing the work that went into it. I you're ever looking for more videos on Blue Jays check out my channel I have a whole lot more on them.
LesleytheBirdNerd if you ever go to California you're likely to see them. From my experience they prefer isolated environments with plenty of trees, just listen for their "Eeerrraaayy!" sound.
At 3:52, what does that sound mean? I just watched to Blue Jays do a little dance of sorts. One would make the above mentioned sound and hop, and the second Blue Jay would make what was almost like a honk sound, and hop as well. This repeated a few times until one flew away.
Wonderful video, Leslie! I am enjoying it immmensely. I heard a blue jay in the backyard just a little while ago, and it sounded like a tree frog or a toad (not ribbit sounds) It was very interesting. I hadn't heard that before, but we don't have frogs in the backyard!
If mankind survives into the future I bet bird linguistics will be a new science and certainly the Jays, Crows and Magpies will be among the most studied! As always -- wonderful video.
Thank you glad you enjoyed the video. I know what you mean by buying all those peanuts, I've spent way too much money on peanuts over the last few years. But like you it's just well worth it, I love watching and recording them.
No I don't bother to spend too much time on the Robins. Although I really do enjoy them alot and would love to tame one, I think it would be quite the task. Myself and Jamie sove a newly fledged robin about a month ago, we released it immediately back into the wild. It was ok, just a little banged up from a cat, no blood or anything and we did see the little one a few days after the rescue, so it seemed to work out good.
Thank you Mary!! The jays make a lot of different sounds and calls, Interesting that you describe one of it's calls that it was making in your yard as sounding like a frog or toad. Was the frog like sound that you heard in this video?
Do their calls vary by region? I'm used to the unique calls that I hear from Blue Jays in western New York (state). Then, I went to Long Island and saw Blue Jays there, making unique calls that I've never heard anywhere else.
When I play this for "my" jays they are like WTF? WASHINGTON STATE. Our jays do not seem as smart as yours. I'll teach em. Thanks Leslie you are awesome.
I hear ya, because I think if I were described the way I hear their sounds people would laugh at me..lol. Bird watching is something that takes years of dedication to understand and know what it is you are hearing..hang in there that is what makes it fun.
Serves your buddy right, I would have pecked his head without mercy too lol. My cat watches the blue jays from the window (he's an indoor cat) and the Blue Jays come up to the window for peanuts, the cat goes nuts clicking his teeth and making all kinds of weird meows. Poor cat will probably never know what it is like to catch a bird or mouse but that's fine by me.
I didn't know they made so many sounds, either, so now I watch for it. Question: do you know if they are less vocal in the winter? It appears that way to me; often they'll come for peanuts without making a sound, other times they call loudly. Thanks!!!
I know hey, they really make quite a lot of different sounds and calls. Blue jays are vocal throughout the entire year, but during the winter they are more quiet, that is of course as long as no one, like a hawk or cat upsets them. You should begin to hear them being much more vocal again over the next month and into Spring. Thanks for your comment
Thank you for your response! I have a pair that come to my front yard every morning. Some days this winter they are quiet and I don't know they are there, other days they will call and even do the bobbing. I like to think they come because I try to mimic their call.
+SubArcticWolf Tools & Outdoors I'm not sure what call you are referring to but it sounds like it might be there, "Jaay Jaay" call? If so, that call is usually made to locate other jays, or to warn of threat, and also to let other jays know that that they found a good food source.
I also have a baby blue jay shes well past the fledgeling phase and i thought you should know blue jays seem to have another sound they make when very happy it wasnt caught in the video, ill try and get a video of her doing it, I really like the videos and so does Loki keep up the good work :D
Hi Lesley, how are you? I love your videos I haven't seen all your videos but I seen were the best . I have blue jays that I feed everyday, a couple times a day, now I have one blue jay that still has a baby face, no crown, no white just very dark blue he looks funny cause you see a normal blue jay body, feathers, markings are all the same,I would say he's probably about 3-4 months old, and he's still with mom toowhich I think is unusual, can you let me know if this is normal or no. Thank you. Shelley

I've been around blue jays all my life, but had no idea they had so many different sounds. Thanks!
I honestly never knew they made so many sounds. I usually only hear them going "screech screech." :)
I just thought the same thing....the only thing I hear, and it is usually in the spring, so maybe it's a territorial thing when they have babies...
Thanks for sharing! Blue Jays are truly amazing creatures. =}
Thank you!
Blue Jays are very fun and interesting, always something cool with those birds. Never gets boring watching them that's for sure!
Thank you for making this series of videos. I have a Blue Jay I rescued and he/she loves to listen to these and talks back to them. I play them for him often. He will be released soon as his tail is growing back again. Thank you again for sharing these.

Nice collection of pictures :) Chipmunks are so cute, too. Especially with a big ole peanut in their mouth, haha.

This is my list of my three favorites birds
-The third is the Northern cardinal
-The second is the Blue jay
-The first is the Puffin bird
Great list! Cardinals are awesome, and blue jays are super fun and beautiful. The puffins are sweet and neat looking

Man do i look fine in this video!
Mordecai The Awesome Bluejay #PuppetMaster 😂😂😂😂😂
Wonderful video, Leslie! I am enjoying it immmensely. I heard a blue jay in the backyard just a little while ago, and it sounded like a tree frog or a toad (not ribbit sounds) It was very interesting. I hadn't heard that before, but we don't have frogs in the backyard!
If mankind survives into the future I bet bird linguistics will be a new science and certainly the Jays, Crows and Magpies will be among the most studied! As always -- wonderful video.
Brilliant video must have took a lot of time and patience
Cool, thanks I'm going to check it out
Haha, I love the ending!
+trillylily16 Thank you :) Glad you enjoyed that
+LesleytheBirdNerd You're welcome. :)
Gorgeous, Footage!
Thank you glad you enjoyed the video.
I know what you mean by buying all those peanuts, I've spent way too much money on peanuts over the last few years. But like you it's just well worth it, I love watching and recording them.
Very good quality! Enjoyed watching
Beautiful videos..thanks
Thank you
When I play this for "my" jays they are like WTF? WASHINGTON STATE. Our jays do not seem as smart as yours. I'll teach em. Thanks Leslie you are awesome.
the sound they make @ 1:35 is my favorite, reminds me of red wind blackbird call from Arizona
nice way to get a peanut out of its shell. Nice sound😊👏
I hear ya, because I think if I were described the way I hear their sounds people would laugh at me..lol. Bird watching is something that takes years of dedication to understand and know what it is you are hearing..hang in there that is what makes it fun.
Thank you for the kind comment
2:42 This is a sound I hear every time a particular large blue jay visits. It is asking for peanuts?
Catbird like sounds! I have a Jay that mimics my own laugh!
Serves your buddy right, I would have pecked his head without mercy too lol.
My cat watches the blue jays from the window (he's an indoor cat) and the Blue Jays come up to the window for peanuts, the cat goes nuts clicking his teeth and making all kinds of weird meows. Poor cat will probably never know what it is like to catch a bird or mouse but that's fine by me.
is that another Blue Jay calling at 7:13 onwards for a few seconds?
Can you confirm what the sound/call at about 1:10 signifies?
I'm sitting in the backyard calling in Jays with this video. what does their 'what what' call mean
My favorite Bird
Hi Lesley, how are you? I love your videos I haven't seen all your videos but I seen were the best . I have blue jays that I feed everyday, a couple times a day, now I have one blue jay that still has a baby face, no crown, no white just very dark blue he looks funny cause you see a normal blue jay body, feathers, markings are all the same,I would say he's probably about 3-4 months old, and he's still with mom toowhich I think is unusual, can you let me know if this is normal or no. Thank you. Shelley
