    Great spreadsheet and listing! I like the cover illustrations on those new Masterworks (the Best Of column).
    Thanks for sharing info on this site and for the fabulous interview! Great info.
    He's right--the browsing experience is wonderful and missing from most bookstores these days, as most stores now are focused on best sellers and obvious books (inventory has to move, has to sell, if bookstores stay in business).

    • @vintagesf
      @vintagesf  Місяць тому +1

      @@duanespurlock5879 Bookselling has changed a lot in the last 30 to 40 years. 1. Online sales from warehouses. 2. Price controls by big players (Amazon, Walmart). 3. As you mention, fast moving inventory requirements by surviving brick and mortar. This translates into homogeneous and reduced stock.
      One hope I see in the future for used bookstores is the rapid increase in shipping prices for books. Less sales by eBay may translate in more sales in your own town.

      @@user-kt9tk7rj1w Guilty as charged! However, we are closer than ever to actually delivering. The excitement has made me lose my head and make another bold prediction. In my own defense, I will say that I'm at least as good at predicting a launch as George R. R. Martin or Elon Musk... 🙃

      Actually, i did not know about Simak's book until much later... at which time I ran out and bought a copy and there it still sits on my TBR pile.
      The inspiration came from the into to The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester. One of my all-time favorites!

    Very cool. Sort of an internet fan convention. Unfortunately, those disappeared where I live decades ago. I will check his site out!
    "Women Authors" are interesting. The ladies have always been there, sometimes we did not know it: Married teams CL. Moore/Henry Kuttner and A. E. van Vogt/E. Mayne Hull collaborated frequently and were published separately, too. Very different, separately!
    Not SF or fiction, but Abigail Adams was very influential.

    That's nice, but what if I have multiple editions of a book or a book translated in a different language? I prefer to use Goodreads as you can add to your shelves different editions and different languages of a book. The book challenge is very interesting, but unfortunately, as I previously said, there is no way to select a book edition or language other than the default one.
    I don't intend to offend. This should be taken as constructive criticism and maybe in the future these features could be added to the website

    • @icowdave
      @icowdave 2 місяці тому +2

      Having a single entry for each book is a bit limiting and something that will be addressed in the future. Our goal is to show variant publications so that readers can select the actual edition that they read/own and the correct cover will show for each publisher. There are some other features in the pipeline to help book collectors specifically as well but that be awhile.
      Do keep in mind that we're just a couple guys building this site in our spare time. We'll get there... eventually. Thanks for the comments.

    I live in a middling sized city and the bookstores are Barney Nobles or Half-Price Books. The thrift store books are mostly boring. Terrible selection. I have to do most of my book acquisition through the internet.

    • @vintagesf
      @vintagesf  2 місяці тому

      I will say that Half-Price Bookstores in Tucson, Arizona are pretty good. Often noted that books without barcodes, pre 1978 I think, are priced better than expected. Why? Because they use the barcode to scan and set a price on books after 1978. They don't always know the value of a book before 1978.

    • @vilstef6988
      @vilstef6988 2 місяці тому

      Half-Price moved out of their original location about 15 years ago and occasionally some real treasures show up. Even so, mass-market paperbacks are thin on the ground everywhere in my city.

      I used to frequent Bookman's when I lived in Tucson. It was in a house when I moved there and moved to an old grocery store(or maybe a grocery store sized electronics store - not sure what was originally there) before I left. Loved that place. There are no Half Priced Books where I live now, but rumor has it that there is an awesome bookstore downtown that I will be checking out. Most of the used bookstores in the other places that I have lived put a minimum of $4 on the older books, sometimes more. Some places have very little science fiction and it is looking like the current place may be one of those. The library isn't too bad, so I may not be buying as much as I have in the past.

    • @vintagesf
      @vintagesf  Місяць тому

      @@daxxh I visited Bookman’s. Found some SF, particularly a couple hardcover Neal Stephenson books. There was a place on 4th street just after the underpass that was a nice small bookstore. Picked up a few Richard Matheson books there.
