Strange first contact story between a rock and a rogue. Rogue in Space by Fredric Brown 1957.
Переглядів 19812 годин тому
Rogue in Space is a science fiction novel by American writer Fredric Brown, first published in 1957. Brown expanded two earlier novelettes ("Gateway to Darkness", published in Super Science Stories in 1949; and "Gateway to Glory", published in Amazing Stories in 1950) to form the novel. By the way, it was Lanier who convinced his employer to publish Dune by Frank Herbert. The book was rejected by many publishers before. It was the first novel for Chilton, a Boston publisher specializing in business magazines and automobile repair books. This first edition did not sell well and Lanier was fired.

Great book delivery! Neal Stephenson and his Baroque cycle are great. I am living close to Hannover where the Library collects everything about Leibniz. There is a whole book only about his calculation machine and a replica too. Furthermore, there are a lot of connections between England and Hannover because of the personal union between Great Britain and Hanover from 1714 to 1837. During this time, the Elector of Brunswick-Lüneburg or King of Hanover was simultaneously King of Great Britain. Interestingly, there is a real Golden Letter, a handwritten document made of gold sheet in the Burmese language, which the Burmese King Alaungphaya had written on May 7, 1756 and sent to the British King George II in London, offering trade relationships. The letter is now kept in the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library in Hanover. I saw Hiero in the Masterworks series. But I cannot read much about post-atomic worlds.

Great haul. The Starwolf series by Edmund Hamilton were my introduction to the rebirth of Space Opera in the 60s; fun, adventure, and derring-do. Also Morgan Chase's super strength from being raised on a high-gravity planet is reminiscent of Hamilton's writing for DC Comics. 'Best of Walter M. Miller, Jr.' might not be all of his best but it is pretty close. Miller shown in his short fiction and this book contains some excellent examples. 'The Darfsteller' is one of my favorites. It won the very first Hugo Award for best Novelette.

Another Stephenson hb collector! - the earlier book Cryptonomicon is also loosely part of the Baroque Cycle, even though it is set in the WW2 era. Won’t spoil it for you how it is connected if you haven’t read it yet. Anything by Bayley is worth getting too! Cheers.

I was so taken by 'Seveneves' that I started to collect Stephenson's books. Found, to my surprise, that the hbs were no more expensive than the paperbacks at some used book stores. Apparently heavy hbs are difficult to sell. When it comes to large page count books I find it easier to read the hbs. Worth the shelf space.

This book came out when I was 22 and I was so ready. It stoked me to collect all of Gibson’s books I could find. The way had been paved for me by Blade Runner, as you say, but also oddly enough by Max Headroom, the TV series, with it’s Network 23 cast of cyber-journalists. There’s an interesting introductory essay in a recent reprint edition regarding the opening line:the sky above the port was the colour of a TV tuned to a dead channel. It was pointed out that at that time it would refer to a snowy screen, and that’s what I pictured. But later, it would be a clear, featureless blue colour, on modern digital televisions. So what colour do modern readers see?

Virtually nothing gets remaindered in the UK now- or at least there are now so few remainder shops that they're near invisible: I used to buy loads of remainders in the 80s and 90s. Instead we have outlets that stock overstocks from publishers (basically the same thing, but they are titles still in print that regular booksellers are still expected to sell by publishers) and print on demand editions of backlist titles- for example, if you get a super-shiny laminate cover on a Masterwork, that's from a tranche run off for the bargain book market, which is a bit naughty in my view. You also get A Format versions of B format titles specially printed for rack spinners standing in non-book trade outlets.

@@vintagesf Broadly, yes. When the big changes came, they were like keystones being pulled out that caused an avalanche. These changes were (1) the end of the NBA (Net Book Agreement) - which had maintained prices for a century, meaning that books were not discounted, but sold at the same price everywhere, so you competed on range and service and (2) the internet, specifically Amazon. Most of the smaller changes since then that have piled up are down to those things.

5:52: Or John Wyndham "The Chrysalids"/ "Re-Birth"(US). A better story than "Blood Music" by a whisker imo.

Richard, I hope you will be as engrossed with "Flashback" as much as I was! I did not use "enjoy", as it hard to apply to this book. The end is interpreted variously. I think Simmons has the protagonist prove it is not a dream. I reread it several times. I have the Crouch "Upgrade" coming. While I see no connection between the 2018 Blumhouse film "Upgrade" and the Crouch novel, they seem related by concept. The film uses a specific hardware/software engineering, and the novel a bioengineering approach to portray "the next step in human evolution". The film has a very Nietzschean main character, who you do not realize IS the main character until late in the film. About all I can say without spoilers. This movie is great. Kara appears to be the Superman acolyte in The Crouch novel? I have a pile of books to read! Thanks for the mention, the microphone I purchased for my reviews has developed a crackle, maybe the proximity to metal in my desk. I will have to experiment!

Nice score on the NESFA van vogt book! I dislike the new banks livery, severely lacking spaceships! I have that same edition of Firefall. The Adam Roberts book is bk2 of 2 of the only series he has done (the rest standslones). They're set in my hometown, or a version of it. Must read them!

It's been on my shelf for a long time (it's sitting next to Drood and The Terror which I read years ago, they are excellent). And I did reread Hyperion some time ago - and there's mention of Flashback in it! So I guess I'll read it soon.
