- This video really shows how foxes can recognize a sickly pup and reject it. This is a sad but a true instinctual trait that most wildlife have (and many domestic animals). Some runts aren't suppose to make it, they are supposed to be rejected because the mother fox can tell they will not make it in the wild. In their own way they are trying to prevent the suffering. At the time we didn't know this was the case with Mini...she could have been just 'small' but that wasn't the case and the foxes knew it!
And I can't believe I didn't recognize this before...I had never seen my foxes all react quite like this...by shacking their heads and walking away.
At the time of this video Mini hadn't gone to the vet yet. I hadn't yet discovered Mini's two front legs were completely deformed and practically unusable at birth. It wasn't until she was old enough to start to try to walk that we noticed this.
It is sad. But also very interesting and helpful to know this is how the foxes react to sickly pup.
Regardless it's never a waste of my time to try to save them, no matter the foxes opinion on it.
🦊 Some foxes that couldn't have a good quality of life or survive in the wild, can still thrive in captivity. Their is a lot more assistance provided to captive foxes with conditions that of course, wouldn't be available to a wild fox.

@@noraphelan5598 Yes, she passed away :( Actually she died before this video was even posted, Mikayla had filmed it when she was still alive and only posted it after her death because she realized the fox’s reaction to Mini Mouse was actually them rejecting her because she was so sick. Mikayla didn’t realize how sick she was until she started trying to walk. That’s when she saw Mini’s front legs were deformed and it turns out she had an infection in them. Had she survived, both her front legs would have needed to be amputated, but SaveAFox was willing to try that and wanted to get her a wheelchair or prosthetics. Sadly she died though, I think just a day or two after the vet appointment where they found all that out :(

@@noraphelan5598 I know she said in her IG caption on the post about Mini’s passing that she didn’t know if she could ever rescue another fox pup again, but I certainly hope she does continue rescuing them because I know she did everything she could for Mini and gave her a good life, no matter how short. Mini was loved, cared for, played with, had a soft place to sleep...she never would have gotten any of that on the fur farm. Because she was rescued by SaveAFox, she knew love. She had a name. And she didn’t die alone.
It's interesting how Dixie and Emmie are so quick to leave, but Finnigen is the one that hangs around for a bit. Almost as if he's saying, "I'm sorry you're not going to make it, little one. I would have loved to get to know you."
I was really surprised by "not a Fox's fox" Emmie being the quickest in reacting
@@Algo1 hard to say if that’s it considering she’s afraid of most foxes. She doesn’t seem to think she’s a Fox at all, and only recently started warming a bit to Muttias. But she loves Leo who thinks he’s a fox, so maybe she thinks she’s a fox wannabe.

Finnegan is fatherly towards baby foxes. I still remember when Kipper was a baby and finnegan brought toys for kipper. Finnegan was also compassionate to Baby Leo cat.

It breaks my heart that a little baby fox had passed away. I have to remember that animals can tell when one of their kind have something wrong with them. They can’t keep it.

You did your work, Mikayla. You all did. This poor creature at the very least left her suffering behind knowing even just a shred of the love you and Merri had to give, when she otherwise would have received none in this world. You get back what you give in the end, Mikayla. Remember that. This world is cruel, but you are a source of kindness, and now Mini is just another among the many souls who wait to return the love you and your volunteers have given on the other side.

After reading the comments it sounds like this wee baby has left this world. I know that in your care she had the best life for as long as she could. Mikayla, you truly are a saint to these foxes. @@naenae796 I want to work with the foxes.. The other month i found one full of mange in my back shed in broad day light. I knew he was very old and sick. Here in the UK they are among the residential areas, but only usually come out at night or early morning hours. It's usually not a good sign to see one in the day time. I want to work with animals so much, all I can do atm is help the local stray cats. They all know they are welcome to come and eat at mine, lol

@@naenae796 You know I didn't even know the USA had foxes. I grew up in Los Angeles. We had opossums, skunks, racoons even mountain lions. But i had never seen a fox until I moved to the UK. Aren't their tail just gorgeous. I'm still watching this channel now, Finnegan invites friends over. lol So Cute..
@@JaneCooper190072 Yeah, we have all those critters too except for the mountain lions but they have been sighted here every so many years. We even have pesky coyotes who are getting more and more bolder. My son and grandson hunt them in the fall to help curb the population.
Read the description, or the comment left by SaveAFox. This is Mini-Mouse as she was being introduced to the foxes, and they all rejected her because they knew, even Finnigen who loves fox kits, that she wasn't going to make it.
Its obvious Finn really wanted to fight his instincts and get to know the kit. Watching his expression, you could feel his inner battle between his wanting to be a good father figure, and his instincts telling him it was more merciful for him to abandon her. I so wish she could have made it, I'm sure it would have been a great surprise to the foxes, and in sure Finn would have been so sweet to her.
This vid shows me that Finnegan has one of the biggest hearts a fox could have.

Looks like Finnegan was trying his darndest to like the little one but ultimately had to decide that this pup just wasn't right...he knew it was on its way out. Poor little thing.

I remember the day after Mini passed you posted a video with Finnegan and were quiet, and he also reacted in turn. It’s clear he sensed you were sad, but seeing this, I think it’s even more clear he understood why. The more I watch the more I am so amazed by what instinctual, unbelievably emotionally intelligent creatures the foxes are (and Finnegan in particular) - perhaps even more so than humans. As you said, absolutely not a waste in trying. Thank you for all you do Mikayla. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

All baby foxes make that sound, healthy or sick.
@@Gdayhomie well this is why all the foxes rejected her, they sensed it and instinct tells them that just can’t help, they have to abandoned! So sad !
Finn took longer to sniff out the baby to make sure he was sensing what he was supposed to sense... his eyes got narrow as he was concentrating hard to understand what he was gathering from the pup, but eventually he discerned what others had concluded quicker, poor thing.
My cat Chewbacca came over to me when the baby fox was making all the cute noises ❤
Meanwhile my cats were terrified of it 😿 They immediately started to check over their shoulders trying to see if something was lurking in the shadows
My chihuahuas were concerned and went looking for the baby
I guess instinctually some cats would respond by either thinking it was a predator, or realising it was a quick meal. Depends on the cat though, how wild and how much instincts they have!

It’s quite bittersweet, seeing this. Somewhat humorous seeing the different reactions of the foxes, even if they are mostly negative.
Dixie: “I can’t let myself get attached to this dying pup”

Sad in retrospect, but I appreciate you sharing what you learned from these encounters.
It's very sad that little Mini didn't survive. I watched the video before I read the description and I also thought their reaction was definitely different compared to how they first reacted to Kipper.
I suspect they could smell that something was wrong with Mini. It's probably similar to the way dogs can smell when someone is about faint from low blood sugar or have an epileptic seizure and warn them.
That's very interesting doing that because they are the only ones to know so quickly if he's gonna make it or not and I could see that by comparing their reaction here to the reactions they had on baby Kipper. On Kipper, Finnegan was laughing and was looking happy, here he was calm and checking him and his ears also made him look else sad or worried

Knowing that she died in someone's hands is what hurts the most about this situation. I wish everyone at Save A Fox nothing but strength and goodness knowing that this is a part of the process running a rescue.

We know you can’t save them all, but even giving the “runts” a chance, and showing them love and kindness, is wonderful and worth every bit of time and effort.

WOW! It is very interesting that all the foxes had the same reaction. I am a retired clinical pharmacist that sometimes worked in the icu. Some dying patients have a certain distinctive smell. I wonder if dying pups carry a certain scent that foxes can pick up, and that is why they all shook their heads to shake off that scent. Rest in peace sweet Mini. 😥

A sick baby must give off a scent that is unpleasant, going by the way they shake their heads. Dixie runs away pretty much instantly, but Finnegan looked like he was trying to overcome his first reaction. We don't often see him look so serious. I'm sorry Mini missed out on life at SAF, but you did an amazing job with her while she was here.
I'm learning so many things I never would have known without your Fox rescue. You and your people do great work. RIP Mini.

One of the toughest things to deal with as a helper, be it of animals or humans (well, technically we're animals too), the fact that it's impossible to save everyone, no matter how hard one tries.
You're no less of a hero for helping and putting in all the effort you, and all the others at SAF, are doing, and Mouse and Mini will be with us in heart and memory. ❤

Don't get down on yourself for not recognising behaviour you have never seen. From what I have gathered from earlier posts on IG, Mini was in a bad shape and I doubt many people, if anyone, could have taken better care of her than you guys!

But, it’s the thought and the want to help this baby that you had in your heart. You are an awesome person and the foxes you do have (Especially Finnegan, who is so very happy) and thet is what makes doing what you do so much more special and rewarding too. Wait, Mini Mouse passed away? :( Last update I saw via Patreon, she had gone to the vet and got the diagnosis of needing a double amputation. But she'd still be able to survive and be put in a wheelchair if one could be made for her.
