Came here from Rhett's channel. Music and photography have always both just been hobbies for me. And you're right, the more shots you take, the more good shots you'll get. People should just be thankful that they don't have to get film developed like we use to.
Hi Tilly. Great job on your first video, you are a natural. So glad I got your autograph in NYC when you and Rhett joined Rick. That gonna be worth something 😊. Best of luck in 2023!
Greetings from Tennessee! I found your channel from Rhett (been subbed for years), and I am a guitar player and photographer (self-proclaimed...). Also a Nikon user, D7200. Excellent tips for beginners! Keep grinding and doing what you love, it will pay off. Subbed!
Wow you're right about #1! It can be paralyzing in the graphic art and painting world as well. If I fail and ruin a canvas it really, really bothers me. I need to ruin hundreds to progress. Thanks!!
Nice video, looking forward to more. I'd really like to see videos that help break away from that "every picture must be amazing" mindset. Several years ago I was taking lots of pictures as I learned the technical side of photography. However, I lost interest once I could get the shot I wanted but found that they weren't all that interesting. A real artist can make something mundane interesting, but I suppose the first step is to get out and start taking mundane shots.
Not that you're not a beauty in and of itself, but geez Tilly, you could also be a a stellar "hand model". (Use those when you do commercial shoots). Great first start on your channel. Very well delivered and nicely, clearly explained. The finger tapping on the Leica glass made me a little nervous but those lens coatings are harder than you'd think. (Maybe there was a filter on it, I didn't notice). Regardless, you'll do well. Put your head down and GO FOR IT! Hebrews 11:6. God bless you two AND your new endeavor.
Thanks for starting this! I recently took over my dad's old film camera and am trying to get better with it -- looking forward to learning from you! Subscribed :)
I wish there was a way to post photos on UA-cam. The best photo I ever took was with a cheap Polaroid camera of my wife and a friend's wife on a beach. The lighting, natural pose, etc. were perfect. Perhaps you can start a Facebook page where people can post photos.
Just popped over from Rhett's channel, Tilly. Long-time photographer and I also love photography as my creative outlet. This was a solid, easy-to-consume nugget of advice for new shooters. Nice job, you easily earned a new sub!
All the best! I'm coming from Rhett's channel. I always wanted to learn photography, and now I have a teacher. The information is clear and easy to understand.
Another of Rhett's followers who is also a photographer, I'll be subscribing here too. One of things I've learnt over the last few years is not to be constrained by a particular type of photography. I always wanted to be a good portrait photographer, but I mostly suck at it. What I've found is that I'm a better landscape photographer and if I'd just plugged away at portraits, I would have never found that out.
Hi Tilly, Greetings from Charleston. I’m here at the prompting of Rhett, but after seeing your video, I wanted to show support at the start of your UA-cam journey. Along with music, I’m a 40 year photography enthusiast, producing/selling fine art photography. (I say “fine art” as a declaration of intent, not a claim.) Time will tell. When I was starting out, I would have appreciated your video. Today’s beginners will appreciate this video now. BTW - Rhett knows exactly what he’s doing. He’s following his passion. I’ve been rooting for him secretly for years. Look at what he’s built… surely with your support. Follow your passion with this channel and you’ll be successful as well. The very best to you. Cheers!
This channel will be great. I just got an iPhone 14 Pro Max and I think it really does insist that I learn a bit more about photography than just point and shoot. Suggestion - youtube videos at some point about taking photos of guitars, grandchildren and dogs. Thanks and good luck !
So informative! Thanks for putting things in a way so easy to understand. Also, I like your editing style. Subscribed. You are now my photography teacher! ⚡️
As Rett stated: If your interested in photography and film photography, take a look at Tilly's channel. Now I've subscribed and looking forward to your content. I really enjoyed your edditing style, the way you approch the subject and your humble straight forwardness. Quallity of sound excellent. Wish you all the best with your UA-cam endavour.
Love this! I really appreciated how you paced the information so that I could take it all in, you've got the heart of a teacher. Lookin' forward to the next video!
Dam girl you hit it out of the park, great job!!! Your style is fresh, real and I like it. As a former photographer I look forward to move videos, hell I might even dust off my gear and learn a few things from you.
Hi Tilly. I basically came to your channel out of curiosity from Rhett's suggestion. Little did I know that you would explain what I have always wanted to know about all the settings on cameras. I subscribed and will be sharing your video with my wife who I'm sure will love to know these things too. You made this all very easy to understand. Thanks a lot. Great video
That was one of the simplest, most straight-forward, and best explanations of aperture I've watched/read anywhere. Greeting from Ireland. Welcome to UA-cam. Subscribed!
Rhett subscriber here! Half of my best friends are into cameras which gotten me into it as well to some degree. Looking forward to how youyr channel grows. =)
Hey, is this Rhett's better half? Awesome! I'm here from Philip Conrad's channel. I'm not a photographer, but I do concert visuals and image magnification (IMAG, in showbiz lingo), and I'm looking to improve the shots I focus on live and think that learning photography basics can help. Looking forward to your advice.
Great content with this video...and also I like your editing style. I primarily shoot film these days and post my content on FB each Tuesday. I am looking forward to following your journey into film photography.
Love the Leica M6! I’ve taken so many great photos with mine, but it’s been too long since I’ve taken it out, so I’m selling it to buy a guitar… reach out if anyone is interested.
Love your husband's channel and looking fwd to learning more about photography on your channel!..Would you be able to do a vid on picture file management and organization? If I remember correctly, Rhett stated in one of his tour vids that you are great at getting things organized and in order and wondering if you have a strategy in categorizing, organizing and storing picture files? Best of luck with the channel, cheers!
Absolutely great I'm glad that Rhett mentionned your channel, I've been doing photos in atomatic mode for so long and always found myself dumb to not be able to manually adjust my photos so here I am ready for your next series of videos and ready to learn ! Thanks a lot
Just wondering what this video is being shot with? I hope that you'll be getting into the video side of things as well as I'm a complete amateur looking to start doing youtube content. Thanks for starting this up.
Nice video Tilly Photography as a hobby has been in a bit of a hiatus for me over the past year or more, so much so that it has dropped of the radar as a UA-cam video recommendation subject. I have subscribe so hopefully your enthusiasm turns that around. I liked your first tip particularly. Iconic shots can be a good tool for learning the photographic language and the techniques for producing them, but freeing yourself to take photos that show the world as you see it, showing what catches your eye, and finding a way to frame it so as to convey that the most succinctly is where photography becomes a way to express yourself. It is the journey that takes us from taking pictures of things, to taking pictures about things.
Thanks for these tips, you have got me interested in taking some photos! What advice would you give me on buying a camera? I do have a very old camera but I’m guessing new ones are much better? Any tips on choosing a camera would be appreciated.
Great first video. Are you planning to go into darkroom? I was a part time pro photographer in the late '70's and early 80's , and B&W darkroom was very rewarding. I did table top studio, weddings, and sporting events mostly. Great fun, but really tough to make a living for a family in Los Angeles. I still have thousands of dollars worth of old Nikon gear in my closet. I hope film comes back in a big way.
I started shooting stills in 2004 with a point and shoot on manual mode and got my first DSLR in 2009. I learned completely from experimenting, never read anything on how to do things (not necessarily the best way). I also worked in film for 9 years (on set with the sound dept), so I have seen countless film camera and lighting setups, which definitely informed my choices as a still photographer. I’ll subscribe here, and I look forward to when you do videos that teach me something (never knew what the A and S mode designations on a digital camera meant cuz I’m always in manual, so you already taught me something in video 1).
Wow - this brings back memories - I took a photography course in college back in the early 80's - 35mm film that we learned to develop with chemicals in the darkroom, and then expose the negatives to photo paper. Times have changed, but photography is still a highly crafted skill that can truly become art in the right hands. Good luck to you and your new adventure. (BTW, Rhett sent me here)
Tilly it is wonderful to see you pursuing your own channel! I am sure you have lots of ideas - but one thing that seems to be highly sought after in terms of video searches on youtube is direct comparisons between high end smartphones and DSLR cameras. I think most of those videos are analyzing the resulting photographs.... but it would also be interesting to analyze the mechanics of each of the fundamentals you are discussing in this video! Also. Congrats on the channel! You are going to do incredible.
Hi Tilly! Welcome to UA-cam! Great first video. Glad to see that film isn't dead. I got my first real camera about 50 years ago. I took a lot of memories, and a few pictures that I'm really proud of. For people who take pictures as a hobby, I recommend they try to take the best picture they can, but don't miss the shot because you were fussing over it. I missed a shot the other day of one of the stray cats we take care of. She was sitting on a table out back with the sun behind her. I messed around too much trying to get a better shot and she moved. Looking forward to new videos!
This could have easily been a Photography 101 video, but the way you explain everything is incredible! My first Reflex camera is due to arrive this month, right in time for some holiday shots. I would love to see some more m to more photographers too!
It's funny how, as an amateur photographer, I've always thought, point and click. Set my camera to automatically do what it's got to do. 1st lesson learned, Ms Tilly. I look forward to hearing what more you can teach me. Thx 😊.
Phenomenal first video!! Im not even into photography like that but i legitimately enjoy watching and listening and loved how you put the whole thing together♡
6:39 Rick fucking Beato, wtf you doing here LOL Thanks for the dial information, i never knew the initials on it, since i was constantly shooting on manual. I never knew what A and S meant over there. Would love to see your photo walks and see results and you talk about your settings and showing the results. If you ever shoot Super8 or 16mm, please do videos on them also
Excited for your journey Tilly. I can remember talking about camera gear every now and then way back early on in the evening chats on Rhett’s channel! I’ve been neglecting my own photography for a little while…maybe you can get me to put a guitar down every now and then and go do some shootin’!! 😂 Not gonna lie…that Leica is sexy. (As I side-eye my X-Pro3!!)
Tilly, my Dad was a Pro Photographer his entire life and he gave me a camera, three pieces of advice, and turned me loose. He said look for unusual subject matter, unusual lighting, and unusual picture angles. He also taught me to develop my own black and white film, and process my own photos. Now days I just do digital pictures with my iPhone, but I always remember his advice. Thanks or taking the time to make this very nice video!
Good job Tilly ! I wish you show us how to build a studio from the ground up. What is really important, what is less important but cool... etc. Thank you Tilly and all my wishes of success for your new channel. Have fun. Clin d'oeil de France.
I've been into photography for over 50 years and its nice to see a fresh, down to earth approach.
Love this Tilly! Look forward to the next!
Listen to your heart and you gut. Can’t wait to see what you do! May your creatively soar!
I learned some stuff that will help me. Which is cool!
Great shot of the boys smokin their pipes on the road. Cheers!
Definitely helpful to me as a (very!) beginner photographer, thank you!
Perfection. Super clearly explained.
Great job, Tilly...a perfect start...
Am a Rhett fan, now a Tilly fan as well. Go forward young lady

Amazing! So much new interesting information and I am not even a photographer!
Hi Tilly. Great job on your first video, you are a natural. So glad I got your autograph in NYC when you and Rhett joined Rick. That gonna be worth something 😊. Best of luck in 2023!
I'm subscribed...came via Rhett. My other passion (after my Wife and music) is photography. So I look forward to seeing where you take this. Good luck
Came here from Rhett's video. Congrats on the new channel! Very good information.
Very informative, thank you!
Great video Tilly! Can't wait to learn more through your channel.

Love Filmphotography as well as Guitars 😉 Wish you luck with your Channel. greetz ✌🏼
Enjoying your videos

Hallo Tilly, I am a guitar player, no idea about photography. I wish you good luck for your channel and congratulations for beginning!

Here from Rhett's channel...If you get me to spend half of what Rhett got me to spend on guitar gear, I'm in trouble! Great video, Tilly!
