- 19th of October 1812: Napoleon retreats from Moscow with his troops, as he realises his Russian campaign is doomed.
This Russian folk song dates back to the 1700s. Its association with the Napoleonic era stems from a scene in the 1967 Soviet film series War and Peace in which Russian soldiers sing it as they march through an Austrian village on their way to fight the French. It is commonly referred to on the Anglophone non Russian-speaking side of UA-cam as "The Senny Song".

It wasn't just from the movie though, Tolstoy "scripted" that scene with that song himself in the original novel
I didn't know that. Thank you for sharing.
Great song war and peace really benifited with the addition of this song
One of my favorite Russian Napoleonic songs
too bad there is not a lot of recordings
👍
I get the feeling that 0:52 should be "youth hurried me away".
Да здравствуют австрийцы! Да здравствую русские! Да здравствует весь свет!
