The thing that gets lost a bit in the english translation, is the fact that he is writing it to a female friend. Not a wife, because he would propably mention it. Since falling in (sometimes forbidden) love and running of to war (for one reason or another) was a theme (at least in the higher social classes who actually had somewhat of a choice) back then, who the other person really is remains a mystery.
Very touching song. The Crimean War was a terrible and unnecessary conflicit from which rose Europe's russophobia. This russophobia is a reflection of how Europeans automatically distrust Russians, out of Europe's deep psychological feeling of insecurity and inferiority when facing a mighty empire. Russia saved Europe three times against Napoleon, in 1914 (when the east prussia offensive saved paris from falling) and of course against the Nazis and Fascism. What more can Russia do to show its European credentials?

As a Turkish person, I didn't know that we upset the Russians so much. :/
Pffft, it wasn't you who carried the war, British and French did.
