I bought the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite after watching yours and some other's reviews of it. It's great for sketching. I also own the XP-Pen Artist 22 Pro and I will say, that I prefer to go to that for details, linework and shading. I just can't do that on that little Samsung :oP But for the sketcing it's amazing. Because it's so small and I can't really lean into it the same way, I find, that it's much easier to be lose, when sketching and look more on shapes than details while the bigger screen on my XP-Pen is far better for linework because of the larger screen. I find it extremely difficult to do good lines on the Samsung. But lose stuff like sketching and painting is actually probably a little better on the small screen.

I found the pose when drawing quite un-natural and even more, my eyes are a lot more tired. The display is much closer, than the one of even a laptop :-(. I was hoping in going new, but maybe the old "plate" is my way.
When I saw the Wacom Intuos, I was glad it's still there. Btw. what's that for version? Nice small, wireless :).

  • @papkinn
    @papkinn 4 роки тому +105

Ipad shouldn't appear here, to draw on it you need 80$ ipencil what automatically turns it into over 400$ art tablet.
I think it's pretty shady to act like additional 80$ that is needed to turn ipad into an art device is "not a big deal", it is a big deal and a deal breaker for people who look for cheap tablet specially outside America where minimum wage is way smaller.

    • @Pbness
      @Pbness 3 роки тому +9

Even in America the price of 100+ more dollars is too much for most, especially college kids.
Inflation has caused things that were affordable in the 80s with a minimum wage job, like a small apartment and a beater car, to be unaffordable to this generation.
But it isn't shady, he explicitly says that you need to buy the pencil separately, it would be shady if he left it out. And if worse comes to worst you have a finger.

      Not really.
I mean, there are alternatives, you don’t need the Apple Pencil. Especially when its multi-use capabilities mean that in a sense, you’re also saving. Like you could get a cheaper phone because if you’re mostly using that at home, you could just use your iPad which anyways has a bigger screen. Especially useful for movies or tutorials where you need to pay attention to small details on the screen.

S6 Lite is the one that has the best value for money. You get everything you need for under 400 USD which isnt true for Surface Go and an Ipad.
Ipad is the one that has the least value for money IMO, you do get a great device but you need to pay extra for everything including pen and keyboard cover. It also doesnt have any memory card slot so you are stuck with 32GB in 2020. Calculate all the cost and it becomes as expensive as Surface Go 2.

I bought it primarily for general web viewing, games and media playback (the speakers are in the right place for me, and the overall specs are an upgrade from my previous tab, the S [the S1]) but the LCD screen in just HD rez, and the sort of matte finish it has kind of threw me at first. I got used to it, and I noticed that the photos on Instagram from some photography pros I follow looked really amazing (especially this one black & white account). Now I understand the reason for the screen's finish! I also didn't appreciate it had any drawing capabilities at all and now I found the bundled coloring app which I already love. So thanks!

Hey Brad (and anyone else who happens to read this) an unsung contender in the digital art space right now is the new Lenovo Chromebook Duet. It’s super affordable (250 for the 64gb model or 300 for the 128gb version) and only 40 bucks for the pen from Lenovo. What’s great about it is that it’s basically a high end android tablet (with all that implies) and all the benefits of chrome OS like Linux app support. So you have access to two different ecosystems for a low cost on a good and strong device that (if you don’t need a laptop for much and don’t mind chrome os) can even be your daily driver portable (especially the 128gb version) because Lenovo doesn’t make you pay an extra 3-400 bucks for a nice case with a keyboard and trackpad (looking at you Apple and Samsung). Mine has been my daily driver laptop for both my drawing AND writing since release. I’d love to see you do a review on it!

I just wrote this under another video, but since we are talking about the Samsung tablet, I will post it here too, and maybe help someone.
This is going to be long, but maybe it will help others out who had the same problem as me.
2 years ago I bought the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3, after watching your review. I didn't have a big budget to consider the newer tablets, let alone an iPad.
I also didn't want to make much with it. Reading Mangas in bed, drawing some small things while sitting on the sofa, watching UA-cam.
This why I didn't consider a more expensive Tablet either. I paid it €330 (almost the same amount in $), plus a €30 cover.
I regretted it soon after. The palm rejection was really really really bad. I couldn't draw on it at all, without pushing some buttons and making a mess.
The battery was empty very soon, even though I didn't do much. The screen was too small. After a while my eyes started to hurt. But that might be because I have sensitive eyes, like having to wear special glasses for the computer. The one with yellowish lenses. I also have a thyroid condition, which makes my eyes and ears more sensitive. So yeah, that might be just because of that.
Anyway, there were always updates I had to install, not for the apps, but for the tablet. That took a while and emptied the battery very quick too.
I started to hate it. I regretted it, and I knew why. Because it was a Samsung product. I already noticed it with their phones, that they will become slow after a while, and will freeze eventually.
It was a nightmare with tab s3. Last year, I managed to sell it after having it online for like 6 months, and bought a good HP Laptop for over €1000. This time it was an expensive laptop, because it had to replace my computer for things, it can't manage to do anymore. For heavy 3D and Video editing work.
Then a few weeks ago, I thought that even a Laptop is not so much portable like a tablet. It is still too big and heavy to always carry around, and to use for drawing while watching something, without connecting a second monitor. Takes just too much space. I wanted a tablet, but I was so depressed because I didn't want to buy anything too cheap or from Huawei, and Apple products are too expensive.
I watched many reviews of yours, and was insecure. You spoke so well about the Samsung tablets, but I knew how their product behave. I also stopped buying their phones, because I gad to switch it every year.
I was tempted to buy an iPad 9th gen., but then, the screen is too small, the pen is not included, the storage can't be expanded, and Apple admitted themselves, that they make their products slower with a system update. So at the end of the day, it wasn't that much different from Samsung. I searched like crazy, I considered buying a refurbished iPad, but Apple doesn't have any right now. (Not for Germany at least).
I also searched like crazy, for a phone contract like thing. But also too expensive. I would pay the double amount at the end. Then I saw a commercial in TV, from the German store Saturn. They had a Samsung week. Samsung's products were sold at price with no tax. I mean, we pay 19% tax on products, and Saturn toke those 19% away from the price for a whole week. I did take a look, and saw that the products were discounted by 15% (not 19% like stated, but still better as nothing). I saw that this offer included all the tablets too. S6, S6 lite, S5e, S7 etc. I remembered your video about the Samsung S6 lite, and took a look at the price. Normally it would cost around €355, but that week it did cost €302 only. I also researched online, if other stores sold it for less or the same amount, but didn't find anything. Everyone sold them for €355 ca.
I thought and thought... At the end, I decided to buy the Galaxy Tab S6 lite. Why? I gave in by the thought that the pen was included, but didn't care that much about it. It was the storage problem, and the display size. The actual screen you can draw on, on the s6 lite, seemed bigger as the one of the iPad 9th gen. (could be wrong tho). I needed a bigger screen, also because I have big hands...
A few days ago, I finally received it, and I am to 85% happy with it. I don't have updates to install the whole time, the palm rejection got so MUCH better, the battery lasts longer even if I am drawing, there are fewer apps which I can not delete. I am happy for now, it gives me a good feeling. But if I have to be honest, if I had the money for it, I would have bought the last Samsung tablet, because buying older models is always a risk, since they will become slower faster as the apps become bigger and need more resources. But it is still good, because the S6 lite came out recently, right? Not sure about it.
Now, why am I only to 85% happy with it? Well, that is because the screen size is still not optimal for me to draw on. But that is just a subjective thing, the screen works perfectly. Then we have the palm rejection. It is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better as before, but still not so good. I don't push buttons anymore, but when I draw I often have some marks here and there, which is annoying when it happens on a coloring layer.
Then there is the update speed. This is also better as before, but still too slow. My One Plus & phone, needs for the same apps way lesser than Samsung. Samsung has this problem with all its devices. Phone and Tablets. Let's take for example 5 apps, like google, Gmail. Google Drive, maps, and google keyboard. My Phone needs only 30 seconds to install the updates, but the tablets need 1.30 minutes. This is really long. And the more updates you have, the more time it needs. Samsung really has to do better at this, but it is on a good way. Then the last thing is the S Pen. For adults with bigger hands, the pen is too slim and light, which the thickness is more of a problem as the wight, in my opinion. It is difficult to hold the pen while drawing, and make good lines with it. I think this problem can be solved with some rubber things. I don't know how they are called in English, but they are rings or cylinders made from rubber, which you can put on pens and such, for a better grip. They are used a lot with pencils, because they are slim too. They cost only a few bucks, so it is not expensive. But you might still consider it when you calculate your budget. What I found good with the tab S3 pen, was the fact that you could switch the s pen's tip. There were 2 types of tips, for a different drawing experience, and you could switch them, if they were too old. With the S6 Lite S pen, you can not do it, which it will be a problem if you draw a lot, and the tip is also too short. It would be best if it would stick out a bit more, so you can see better where the tip is. This is what I don't like about the S6 Lite, but it is not a huge deal.
Another thing you might consider when buying a Tablet, is the need of the accessories. You definitely need a good cover which protects the case and the screen of the tablet. You might also consider a screen protector, but if you have a good book cover, maybe y screen protector is not necessarily needed. This is why I decided to go for Samsung. At the end I’ve spent €335, book cover and SD card inclusive. And the Pen, it was inclusive too. So, what was better? The S6 lite, or the iPad 9th gen. ? For the price, definitely the S6 lite.

Huion and XP-Pen are catching up real fast to Wacom, hardware wise. I'd even say they're nearing a plateau. Nowadays, the thing that's holding them back is SOFTWARE, right? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have a feeling that you're lenient on them because they're the budget options.
So my suggestion is, how about you go on a deeper dive on how Huion and XP-Pen can best improve on their drivers in terms of the UI and UX? After all, as you've said, SOFTWARE is what makes something like an iPad enjoyable to use. Perhaps by shedding light on it and putting it on the forefront encourage them to improve. I think you have the audience base to make some change happen. It can also spice things up in your reviews.
Just an idea from a viewer. Whatever you do I'm on board anyways. Cheers!

Uhm no, with all due respect to them, huion and xp-pen have horrible quality control (with the new innovator 16 being better than cintiq on paper, but the screen appears very dim in person and getting dimmer over time and having no pen tilt near the edges of the display) and customer support. Colors and are never calibrated as opposed to wacom. And pen tilt is not working properly past a certain point and pen rotation is not an option, alongisde a less natural pressure curve for huion and high initial activation force for xp pen.
While I do agree that Wacom hasn't brought anything new to the table for a good while and is still overpricing their tech, Chinese brands still have to work on their hardware to be on par with wacom, but they may get there in the near future.
Another point to consider is that iPads are becoming more and more accessible now and with procreate being only $10. No driver installation or wire hassle and superb quality control. Plus, you're getting an operating system, a great screen and a great pencil that does indeed stand up to wacom to some extent. I'd gladly take a $350+$100 ipad than a screen tablet for the same price that has worse everything other than screen size.

I have got zero experience with any Apple products before and I'm very confused as to which tool should I get for graphic design.
I'm torn between the new iPad 8th and $400 drawing monitors.

Like Brad says, I do not recommend the Surface go 2, It is used at the school I go to, I have to get it reset once a month because it runs out of disk space, and all I do is check emails, browse and type up a word document from time to time. It's not very powerful :')

I just happen to have a windows surface with a stylus, and an iPad Pro 2018, i use the windows to draw but gonna get Apple Pencil 2 soon.

I wouldn't say the Kamvas 13 is only fully usable for art. I'm a mechanical engineer so I use mine for CAD most of the time but I also use it for art. Overall I would call it a multipurpose pen display

I'd rather choose the ipad Gen 9 over the samsung s6 lite, but I would choose the tab S7 over the ipad pro.

"The pen is lighter than the ipad's"
The Samsung Galaxy's pen doesn't have a battery, so it doesn't require charging.
    Functionality > premium feel.

I'm looking at getting an ipad, and I found a first gen 9.7 inch ipad pro for fairly cheap. With the pencil included someone is selling it for 200. How good do you think it would be for a beginner?
