Wow, I knew Ma had attended Harvard, but I didn't know he studied anthropology! Now I know why he has such an interest in such diverse genres of music, such as his Silk Road Ensemble and blue grass/Americana with Mark O'Connor and Edgar Meyer. He's a beautiful soul, a true humanitarian and one of my heroes.

1993 documentary about Yo-Yo Ma's visit to the Kalahari Bushmen, who he has repeatedly cited as his most profound influence:

"The true artist is not proud: he unfortunately sees that art has no limits; he feels darkly how far he is from the goal, and though he may be admired by others, he is sad not to have reached that point to which his better genius only appears as a distant, guiding sun."
    -Ludwig van Beethoven

Yo-Yo Ma is an incredible person. I wish he was a professor at my Art University. He would make a great guest speaker. Im an art history major, but I would love to hear what he has to say about the arts as a whole

at 2 minutes and 37 seconds he says one of the most important thing about life and music, and that is the delusion that something is the right greatest, when in fact, a true artist will always be learning, and growing and remaining true and authentic to his or her voice.
this is why I can’t stand competition in the field of music. Yeah, I get it we live in a capitalistic society, and there are market demands on everyone’s time and everyone’s tower. But it doesn’t have to be that way, and there are plenty of cultures all around the world where musicians are held in the utmost esteem, Like in India, where many come from a line of musicians that go back generations. so the extended family takes care of the monetary needs of the musician, because they recognize the true value of music. yes

"Mastering an instrument is there to serve the purpose of expression. Doing something in music is to find your voice".

2:32. He obviously never had to audition for orchestra spots. The little Grace Chen became a cut-throat loan shark when it came to auditioning. People would steal each other's sheet music and play all sorts of petty mind games.
