After lots of research, I also chose the Needlepoint holly. Once established it grows fast, with a maximum width of about 10 ft &12 ft high. Its a good smaller alternative to the Nellie Stevens holly which grows much larger.
My needlepoint holly is about 5 feet high, but I want it thicker. So I was thinking pruning it twice a year might be good, but I've only found info that says to prune it in the late winter/early fall. When else should I prune it? Also, the little branches are getting longer, thus the need for thickness in general. I don't want to prune it too much, so I'm trying to figure out how much is enough.
QQ - we had some Texas Privet (about 28) planted 6 months ago and when they were planted they were tied to a post, when should we remove the tie? Thanks!
My holly hedge wasn't pruned on the neighbour's side and it got so long and thin on their side. Now, when it is finally pruned, it doesn't grow back. It's like that for over two years. The hedge is very old, around 100 years old but it has a good growth at the top and on my side. Any ideas what to do, anyone? Thank you so much.
How similar are Burford Hollies? They are all that are available in my area this Spring. Would I use similar spacing? The nurseries are saying plant them further apart but I really like the way yours looks! I want a very dense hedge! Would Burford (not Dwarf) work as a substitute?
Hello Mr. Smith, I have a home that I purchased with a English Laurel hedge along a cyclone fence that has been allowed to grow a good 15+ feet high. I'm trying to decide if I should just take the hedge out all together, or if I should try to cut the hedge way back and try to save it. If I do trim it back, I will need to cut the branches back several feet past all the leaves and into larger branches. Also, it was planted really close to the cyclone fence and the branches are growing through the fence, obviously, I will have to trim all this away along the 4 ft fence. The hedge is really healthy, and I just wonder what I can do without ruining the plants that I will be trimming. I expect it to look rather ugly for some time, I just am wondering if I can do this and have it grow pack as a proper hedge? I'd be grateful for any tips or advice you might be able to give me. Thank you.
All great questions and you will be able to find the answers on specialist you tube sites for sure . I personally would not dig this hedge up but do as you suggest and try to get it back under control. It must love the site if it has grown well. I am sure it will look shocking when you do give it a trim but subject to what else you find on other sites - it should benefit from such a trim! Good Luck.
The red *hollies* get 12 ft+ (liberty, Oakland, Oakleaf, Robin). Nellie gets 20+. Mary Nell is a smaller cousin i think. Arbs are ideal for West and North; heat sensitive in South. (Welcome, my pleasure! 🌹)
I purchased some Japanese boxwoods from Lowe’s to fill in 12 foot by 2 foot area in front of the sidewalk to the entrance to my home. I had hedges there for over 40 years but they finally started firing out. This is my second attempt to start over. I have them planted any suggestions on care. How do I check the ph of the soil?
NO 😳. LOL(it's bred for 8+ ft and its fast). how about a *smaller holly* (carissa, dwarf yaupon, inkberry, helleri, bennett, china girl, etc.) or a *boxwood* (lots of choices) or even a *camellia* (too pretty and expensive to keep small 🌳💞)
Short and to the point! I love it!
This was very helpful! I am in the process of using hollies for hedging and I wanted to see how they look in a video. Thank you.
They're such a pain to maintain! Don't let it grow too high.🙂
0:58 what a subtle flex of the greenhouse ownership
lol
"But in this case, there's just my Ferrari on the other side"
They are amazing!
Thank you for the information! Very helpful

Burfords and 20x10 fast growers like Nellie Stevens. Dwarf Burfords are 5-6ft, slowly reaching 8 (so I've read).
can I grow this in the high desert California?
Which one hedge plant in fast
