- This video is my answer to questions in comments on my Leica M11-P videos on my channel to the question whether there is any difference in the noise level of the shutter sound of the Leica M11-P versus the Leica M11.
Note: @2:55 I say "Leica M11" but obviously there mean "Leica M11-P".

Great video as always. I think the perfect continuation for this video would be a comparison to other M models with different shutters (like the m10, m10-p, m-p240, etc..) or even other cameras.
Many thanks and yes, that would be interesting. I had not the time to expand my experiments, but I bet the M10-P shutter is similar to the M11 and M11-P shutter whereas the M10 shutter and previous M-shutters will be noticeably louder.
It’s not just the sound level, but also the frequency distribution… and there is a distinct difference in these recordings with this M11 having a bit more top end (treble) compared to this M11-P
Correct and well observed! The data is there. But in practical terms, when I hold the M11-P on one ear and the M11 on the other ear and then fire the shutter, I do not really hear a difference. I also spoke with Leica about that. So as said in the last part of the video, the differences - if really there - are marginal and not of practical relevance and I truly believe the shutter is kind of the same. If Leica would have intentionally "improved" the shutter, they would have mentioned in the marketing material of the M11-P.

Really interesting, thanks for taking time to do these measurements. I’m wondering what the perceived sound level would be at a typical distance from a portrait subject, or 0.7m the minimum focus distance for most lenses with rangefinder as worst case practical scenario.
The shutter of the M11 and M11-P is really discrete and does not disturb people. The last part of the video showed this when the cameras were about 20cm away from the iPhone where the metering took place. And with loudness (decibel) its always the case that the loudness level decreases over-proportionally with distance. For portraits, by the way, if you want a completely silent shutter, its safe to shoot with electronic shutter. Portraits do not involve fast moving subjects and then there will be no rolling shutter effect.
I think I would’ve done the lens mounted test without the lens cap (who goes out shooting with a lens cap on?) and maybe a more common lens like a 35 Summilux or 50 Summicron. But still nice to see. By and large the shutter sound is basically the same, I would like to see a test between the M10 vs. M11 and M10-P vs. M11-P though.

I’d prefer a M11-P for its discrete styling and the wonderful top engraving, but I do find my Leica M11 is extremely quiet. Obviously if it really mattered you could always use an electronic shutter.
Interesting video, even though for practical purposes there is no difference. I wonder why the loudness varies from click to click. Maybe it's just an indication of how sensitive the meter is.
I think you are right, the metering is sensitive and reacts accordingly. And I think if you have mechanical pieces moving in a camera body there are always tiny nuances in differences within a corridor of mechanical tolerance.
I actually prefer the shutter sound of the M11 than the M11-P ❤
I am a bit curious, you review Fuji, Hasselblad, Nikon, Panasonic and Leica cameras which all have Sony sensors ! So why do you not review Sony Cameras !?
