Thank you for the thorough review. As you can imagine, there are dozens of reviews of this camera over the last 48 hours on UA-cam. Yours is, by far, the most detailed and intelligent review. I recently traded in my M10R for the M11. For me, it's about the increased battery life, the better IQ and the flexibility of the menu settings. I'm looking forward to your photo comparison.
I love your videos. So thorough and clear---easy to understand. I was considering moving up from an M 10 to an M 11. This video provided me with enough information to make an intelligent choice (yes...I will). Thank you for your excellent, educational UA-cam posts.
10:18 - I realise it makes little difference, but it would be helpful to switch out the hand grip with the baseplate for these comparisons. Makes it more even for my eyes :-) 13:18 - DST I think should always be set to ON. As I’m pretty sure it auto adjusts, but cannot recall last time I checked, or noticed the time being out. 34:50 - The Leica FOTOS app updated today (13 Jan) and now shows M11 Beta, and other videos indicate this functionality coming in next few months
I have my unit already :) black-painted finish. Wonderful camera. So no waiting, just shooting :) Thanks, Ron, for the nice comment, appreciate the positive feedback.
I got the B&H update, and your Channel update for the M11 within seconds of each other. Chose your channel first to see what the camera was about verses B&H.
I'm keeping my M10-R Black Paint even if someday I get an M11 (or later model). Why? Because in my view, it's the last of the film inspired digital M's (removable baseplate). Probably a minor issue in the grand scheme of things, but does make me want to hold on to the camera nevertheless. And, Leica moving away from brass bodies, which is a shame.
I mean aluminum is that bad and it's super lighter than most leicas which is a huge plus. I think their cameras are going to get even lighter and different materials to reduce the cost. The m10-R is an amazing camera but the changes on the m11 are welcomed in my opinion
There will never be an end to your upgrade journey, unless you yourself decide to end it. Every few months something new comes out. Be happy. Go shoot with what you've got instead of constantly comparing. There's never an end to the comparison road.
I am excited for this camera. the versitility in different resolutions will allow to use this camera in various situations with lenses varies by resolving power.
How many shots are possible before the buffer fills up on the 60MP and 36MP settings? What time is needed to the clear buffer? Is the internal storage faster than a good quality SD card?
Can you discuss how the new sensor based metering works? Presumably the shutter is now permanently open as if live view is enabled. My concern with this is that it theoretically increases the delay between pushing the shutter and and finishing the shot. It also doubles the number of actuations of the shutter. So I’m very curious to know how this works. How responsive is the shutter compared to the M10? I wish the digital cameras were as responsive as the mechanical film cameras but I doubt we will get that…
Dear Math: The question that I would like you to answer is: What is the best procedure when changing lenses on the M11 to minimize dust getting on the sensor? I understand in setting the shutter at electrinic the curtain remans open. Thanks. John Leanage
Thanks for your video. Can you also discuss the 20% reduction in weight by the removal of the brass material in the top plate? How does it feel in comparison to previous models? Is it cheap feeling?
My next video will deal with this topic. Still constrained but much more headroom. I already tested this out, just need to publish the video next days.
I’ve had on another channel claims that the M11 sensor would produce the same colors as the ones in a Sony (which I don’t like) . Do you have any experience to say otherwise?
@Mathphotographer - If you use a Leica lens on a Sony A7riv body using an Voigtlander adapter what are the disadvantages? Do you use loose image quality as using an adapter changes the distance from of the lens from the sensor?
One more question. Even though the base is now fixed, is it still of brass construction like the old removable base plate? What is the base material made out of on the M11?
Thank you for providing an intelligent observation from a photographers perspective. It is refreshing against the sea of mindless spec reading drivel I’ve read in the last couple of days from people who have clearly never owned or used an M for any significant period of time. And that includes sites that review cameras as a living and have reviewed multiple previous M releases. Commercially driven mediocrity.
Likely could be a bit better or at least at par; my results from night shootings look like being as good as similar photos taken with the Hasselblad X1DII; but I need more testing to come to conclusions; will surely get back with more impressions on my channel next weeks
Why did they go for the older lopsided X100 style top plate? It throws off the balance for me aesthetically. 😥 May be it will be something I will get used to? Other than that I absolutely love the changes. Internal storage is a great idea for those who need redundancy, though I would’ve liked to have seen at least 128GB internal.
Thanks for that awesome introduction. Can’t wait for the comparison at 20:20. Please do also a night sky/milky way test at 18 megapixel, as far as I get it comparing Nikon Z6 and Z7 or Sony alpha 1 and a7S3 (12 megapixel), the a7S3 with the lowest megapixel delivers the best results of the four cameras, from the Nikons the Z6 with 24 megapixel is far better as the Z7 with 46. To achieve similar results, Leica must have developed an algorithm which kind enlarges each pixel like on the Nikon D850. I seriously hope, the different DNG sizes are not only crop. Wish you clear skies for that test - ideally carried out with the Summilux M 35 full open, which I own and I assume you have it also. - Schöni Grüass uus em Rhiital nooch Züri

Could you see if you're having the same issues with your M11? I know that the sample size of M11 owners is small, and would very much appreciate your thoughts. I have had 5 other people mention that they are experiencing the same issue. ua-cam.com/video/VpChUeKNIp4/v-deo.html

If you refer to the lack of USB-C to USB-C cable for the FOTOS app on Android, then it’s probably down to the extremely low cost / abundance of those cables compared to the cost of authentic MFi certified Lightning cables. There is a FOTOS app for Android, right? And if an Apple user has an iPad Pro, they will also need a USB-C to USB-C. If that wasn’t the issue, it would help to know what it is exactly.
Leica came out with a number of M11 videos. You can reduce your video time a lot by going straight to the point. Many of your viewers are M users so don't waste time
Thanks for the hint. At the point in time (3rd December 2021) when I did the video it was obviously not transparent what Leica will provide in terms of education when they launch the camera in January 2022.
@@mathphotographer Thank you again, I don't meant to be offensive. I watched all your videos. I just bought my M11 Black but very disappointed that it does not have the Perspective Correction function like M10P and M10M. Do you have any knowledge whether Leica will ever upgrade the firmware to put this function back?
Thanks for the video. I‘m not yet a Leica shooter but I enjoyed your video. No clickbait, no drama, just fast and straight to the point information.
Very kind comment, many thanks

December 3. What an amazing early holiday gift!
Indeed - it could not have been better :)
Very well explained in detail. This will help so many people. Looking forward to seeing more about the new M11. Great video Math!
Thank you Lucy.

The FOTOS App has been updated, yes - and I will test it out comprehensively. I think a cable connection is nice because very stable.
Very informative. Thank you for this video.
Again another brilliant video. You always have the best reviews
Thanks a lot!
Your predictions about the new M-11 were correct.
Thank you.
Thanks for the kind comment.

Needs further testing, good question/point.

Lots of things to look into, great questions Paul and I will come to it in the next weeks
Can you test how the crop modes (36 and 18 MP) compare to simply downsizing in post? Particularly with regard to noise?
Started to shoot samples and looking into it, promising first impressions; seems Leica implemented a well working pixel binning

Thanks for sharing. It is awesome.
Thanks for your video. Can you also discuss the 20% reduction in weight by the removal of the brass material in the top plate? How does it feel in comparison to previous models? Is it cheap feeling?
No cheap feeling at all. Feels lighter in terms of weight but solid and durable. Top build quality.
Thank for your review. Can you tell me what is the long exposure limit ? Same as the Q2 ?
My next video will deal with this topic. Still constrained but much more headroom. I already tested this out, just need to publish the video next days.
Does it have a level meter? How does the shutter sound compare to the M10-P/R? Is there any blackout when shooting in Live View?
Wait for follow-up videos, I will get to that in the next weeks, Paul.
Excellent...Many thanks.

Hmmm good question, it does not feel like metal, more like magnesium or therelike; feels very robust but time and use will tell
Joe, how does one select an info profile out of the four after setting them up?
I am curious how the screen-selection vs. dial-selection of shutter speed works. Does the screen override the shutter dial?

I was wondering if the image quality is better then the medium format Hasselblad X1d ii or you would recommend staying with Hasselblad ?
Likely could be a bit better or at least at par; my results from night shootings look like being as good as similar photos taken with the Hasselblad X1DII; but I need more testing to come to conclusions; will surely get back with more impressions on my channel next weeks
Fabulous camera.... I personally do not need any of the 'extra' functions over the M10-R.... yet.......
The M10-R is a top camera, I will still use it going fwd.
Thank you very much for your sharing
Would be nice the digital crop zoom reflects in the framelines in the range finder
indeed
Excellent ! thank you :))
Thanks!
Thank you 👌
How large are the DNG files? Are they compressed?
Will come to that in the next round of videos, lots to publish on topics I already tested out and also lots of things I still need to look into.

Yes that comparison will come

Besten Dank!

If Leica hates Android fans so much then Android fans don't need Leica. Very simple.
