Expectation: Videogames are bad, violent, addictive, etc, etc.
Reality: Games are AWESOME, but you gotta keep an eye out for them not to consume more time of your life than they should. It's better if you play them after you finish your tasks. You'll enjoy them more, and it will feel as a reward, encouraging you even further to finish your tasks, while also garanteeing you'll not consume needed time.

Everything is addictive. There are countless studies showing that the main source of addiction comes from the environment and situation of a person.
Video Games can't truly compare to chemically addictive drugs, but they're still addictive to people in certain situations.

Finally, someone with reasoning, I’m tired of self help gurus idiotically comparing video games to drugs or alcohol, even with the whole dopamine reward system is still idiotic to say they are the same for obvious reasons.
That isn’t to say they are not addictive (I know 😂) but the what’s important is to have balance, do other things, and more than having “goals” just be confident and happy

i think that single player story games are kinda like watching movies with interaction. So if you can watch movies for hours you could also play instead a game which can also be kind of challenging. But playing competitive matches online or MMOs will always lead you to play more and more to become better and stronger, leading to an addictive habit. For me the point, where playing was more stressful than fun, I slowly turned to single player and I didnt regret it. Therefore games can be good, if they are meant and designed to entertain and to have fun.

But they can also be a positive thing, you can develop many skills and qualities through gaming (social skills, planning skills, learn history, survival skills, etc.), all in a very safe environment. You do have to play the right games for the right amount of time though.

    • @robert.mcdonald
      @robert.mcdonald 4 роки тому +8

@@XCSme Yes, that is true. I have heard that for elderly people who play video games, it improves their memory, gives them more excitement and something to do easily while they struggle to move around due to age.
But what I said before still applies. It has recently been classified as addictive since the fortnite craze. If you look it up, I'm sure you will find stories that proves this, like the girl that peed herself because she didn't want to stop playing fortnite to go to the bathroom.
You hear people all the time saying that not only is social media bad for you since it's become a competition of who's life is better which downs your morale but also because it's addictive. When you get likes, thumbs up or hearts, it fires dopamine in your brain which gives you a pleasant feeling and makes it addictive. Video games are a lot similar.
I guess it's all about discipline over how much you use it.

When building a habit (just like you said) it's very important to reward yourself with something after you did something good. Me for example tried to save up ALL of the money I can every single month, about 95% because I still live with my parents so I can afford to save this much, but I lost all motivation to work and started slowly burning out. Now I save only 60% and spend the rest of it on things I want, this way I don't lose motivation, intead it motivates me to make more and at the same time it motivates me to save more.

For me, i wasn't into online multiplayer because i wasn't interested in that kind of thing (if i want to play multiplayer, i do it (IRL) outside, like sports, chessmate, etc...).
It was far worse, every time i felt bored playing something, i would pay on the ps store for playing new games, again and again and again. That was one of the many reasons why i felt so addicted for 20 years now (2002). Sense of competition, completion to 100% in-game, getting more and more trophies, some frustrating moments and also an un-ending feeling of getting rid of that addiction. I was in other words, a victim of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out).
I was a big gamer back in the past but now i'm no more addicted to video games (since i took some resolutions last year AND for this year).
IRL stuff is endless and i'm glad i knew it earlier than i would have.

I wanted to do so much and have no idea who I am anymore. I started using Duolingo and studying French only to cry myself to sleep knowing what I could've been if I studied earlier. Not to mention, looking at guitar videos? My brother got a guitar 10 years ago and hasn't touched it and I only now got that passion for studying it. Dude...
Thank you for this awesome video.
I realized that we had a lot in common. I am too addicted to gaming, and some games taught me how to be patient and work hard to get a reward (RPG games such as Final Fantasy). I started playing league of legends too since 2012 when I was in college, but now you're saying that you started playing the game while you were in HIGHSCHOOL !! dafuq how old are you??? xD
Now, I am also following your reading list. I finished reading the books "How to win friends and influence people" and "Rich dad poor dad". I joined Audible because of you and listened to the book "Models", a fantastic book indeed man. It explains a lot of nowadays dating problems. Right now I am using Audible to read the book "What Every BODY Is Saying". I am excited about it. Next, I shall read "The power of habits".
Lastly, the other thing that in common between us is that I also follow Dan Lok. I listened to your webinar with him couple months ago. He is a brilliant businessman.
    Thanks man for your content.
By the way, what's the game that you're obsessed with right now? You can tell me in a private message if you don't want to advertise it :D

I graduated in July in marketing and today I still haven't got a job, get ripped or a new girlfriend . All I've been doing is playing in my laptop games like WT or WoWs, an eternal grind, I don't even enjoy it but every day I play and play, I had nights in which the sun rises and I'm still playing. It sounds simple to quit or just play less but I honestly can't control it, in my case it's an addiction just like alcohol. I've known people inside the game with 10 times the amount of time that I've spent and I personally hate the person that I have become, it has the potential of ending my future if I don't do something

Gaming has been a part of my life for a while now. I used to game for 6+ hours when I was still in elementary school, basically all day. But I've toned it down significantly in the past few years. It's that big of a part of my life that I'm actually considering pursueing something in the videogame indusry. Nowadays I game a little less and always in the evenings when I'm done with my workout and all my other tasks. Thank you for all the work you do Richard, you've helped me a lot ever since I discovered your channel.
I have a question in case you stumble upon this comment. You said in one of your videos in the past that you don't recommend trying to build more than 1 habit at a time. I wanna build a habit of meditation and working out at the same time. I believe I can achieve it and not get overwhelmed in the process. I would like to hear your thoughts on this.

another quality, helpful, and inspirational video! thank you so much for existing.
also: I think the type of video game played matters too. Video games that include mindfulness, education, logic, or anything that exercises your brain/reflexes/mindfulness are probably healthier ones that don't. I've played through a platformer that required lots of problem-solving and reflexes, and on top of that was really relaxing due to the graphics and music, and it's definitely got a different effect on me than a less-quality, 2-lines-of-code kind of game.

There are strategies to reduce the effect and control it has on ur life, don't worry. I read up articles on cumpulsive buying and I tried working on it. Also having someone to hold u accountable or judge u from time to time is great. Also replace the habit with something somewhat fun instead of just kicking it out of ur life and picking up a really boring habit. That way ull naturaly fall back into old habits
