    We also used that Sonicrafter to tear down the the full height wall to turn it into a half height wall and build an open concept kitchen. We use this tool all the time to cut out perfect drywall squares when building half wall kitchens, and the wood blade we use all the time to cut the bottom of door jams to install tile floors or laminate flooring under the door jams.
    In this DIY kitchen remodeling video, we will show you How to Stabilize a Wobbly Partition Wall also known as a Knee Wall in your kitchen remodel project. Many times do it yourself people want to tear down a kitchen wall while remodeling to create and open concept kitchen. So they knock down kitchen walls and make what we call half walls, resulting in a half wall kitchen.
    Kitchen half wall partitions can be unstable and wiggle around too much
    The problem is with kitchen remodeling, and the nature of knee wall construction, in half wall DIY project, you'll find with that vertical support gone, your kitchen island wall is now wobbly, and I mean very wobbly, so we will show you How to Stabilize a Wobbly Partition Wall.
    we'll give you plenty of kitchen wall ideas, and how to pull off your DIY walls, and how to support walls, with the addition of wall blocking, that can also be used for kitchen cabinet blocking. Essentially adding kitchen wall blocking framing adds another dimension of stability in the wall by preventing moment, especially of the drywall panels. If you can stop the kitchen wall from becoming a moving wall by limiting the range of motion of the drywall as well, you will help make you kitchen half wall/knee wall much more stable.
    Open concept kitchen knee wall construction engineering issues
    The secret to securing a wobbly knee wall/half wall kitchen dining room is to attach something really stable to the floor inside the wall, then attach that structure to the wall so that it cannot wiggle any more.
    Stabilizing the partition wall
    what we do here is get a threaded galvanized pip and a threaded flange to screw the pipe into. The flange mounted tot he floor inside the kitchen knee wall and the top of the threaded pipe also receives a threaded flange to attach the top of the pipe to the top of the kitchen partition wall that you just built.

    Great content!!! I prefer videos that are edited to reduce the length of a video or simplified explanations but if you're not impatient this video is worth watching for ideas.

    I wish I seen this video a week ago. I just finished my half wall and I want to finish with granite too. Thanks for the video.

    Great idea with the threaded pipe and flange. Agreed that a wider diameter pipe would work better, but you got great results.
    Also was good to learn about PL Adhesive (this is what happens when a computer tech guy does real construction...)

    There is NO WAY that little pipe held that wall solid at all. If you really got that wall to stand "kind of solid", that pipe has nothing to do with it. NO WAY.

    This is ok but I would say maybe six out of ten. 1” pipe for sure, screw your flange down tightly, in the video the front right is not seated, use 1/4” drive or 5/16 (hex head) rather than Philips. Philips are designed to strip at some point so tightening them appropriately is difficult. forget the PL, just tighten the 1” pipe. Blocking is essential and if you can run your top blocking into the wing and mechanically fasten to drywall you will add significant stability. Also suggest adding anything you can under the countertop especially if it extends significantly over the wall on either side, glue does not last forever and people lean on the edges. Constraining it from rotation becomes important.

    Interesting solution that I haven't come across before. I have balloon framing with the knee wall sitting on and inline with the girder in the basement so joining the wall studs to the side of the girder with metal bracketsl as is often recommended is not an option. A thick steel L bracket mounted to the inside of the end stud and the top of the girder is another option I've considered but i'm not sure where to source it. I think your method is as good if not better. I would attach the upper bracket to a block between two studs.

    Have you tried using threaded rods anchored into the slab and countersunk on the top of the 2x4? Might help as a different solution in the future. Maybe check into it and see what you think.

      That sounds like a good experiment for the next time we encounter a wobbly half wall, thanks!

    At that point I probably would of reconstructed the wall with wood. But in this case I think some plywood from both sides and then sheetrock over it would have done the job .

      Yeah what's wrong with rebuilding the wall from 2×4 lumber and using stimpson strong tie with all thread what happens if a 300lb. Football players gets drunk and runs into your half wall with granite on top I'm not sure this is the best application !

    I love Robogrip too. Would a pipe wrench have worked better or worse tightening down into the flange? I have a couple of fancy spring loaded pipe wrenches that can get into tight spaces - maybe that would tighten better without the glue? Great video!

      Yes, absolutely, or drill a hole through the pipe and pass a rod through it and use the rod to turn the pipe.

    Awesome video thanks for sharing! The tool you used to cut the section out of the floor for the 1/2 inch pipe flange, what was it? Same tool you used to cut the drywall? In my arsenal, I'd have to use a cut off wheel die grinder.

    Would this work without access to the concrete? We have a 2x4 at the bottom instead of metal

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  5 років тому +1

      Yes, you can screw it into the 2x4 as long as it is stable mounted to the floor. You can also try drilling through the 2x4 until you reach the concrete, and add more fasteners to secure the 2 x 4 to the concrete even better.

    Where did you get the counter top from. I checked Home Depot and they didn’t have any kind of counter tops for half wing walls only shelves. Thanks

      Jay, check out our other video where we built this wall, called How to Build a Knee Wall: ua-cam.com/video/cjBVFwVeciI/v-deo.html We talk all about that granite piece. That granite was custom made for me by my granite contractor who also made my granite for the kitchen counters, cost $250, and if I remember it was a simple rectangle piece 48" x 13", or pretty close to that. I had paid a bit extra to have them double it up to 1 1/2" around the edge so it looks like it is a thick slab, even though the center part of it is only standard 3/4" thick granite layer. They filled in the interior of the granite with a sheet of plywood.

    That’s was ghetto much better ways to stabilize a wall for a professional, which I’m hoping you are, should have reframed the wall and used 2 threaded rods also would have been easier to get better looking drywall joints

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  4 роки тому +3

      No need to reframe the wall, you just want to overcharge people for needless work. Obviously you did not watch the video, because sound engineering techniques were used, in the end the wall was nice and sturdy, and the corners were nice and square. Nothing Ghetto about that.

    instead of all the jerry - rigging you could have just ripped that crap out and built a new wall the right way..

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  3 роки тому +1

      It is not Jerry rigging this is how you should build the wall to begin with you say tear down the wall and build it up right? This is how it should have been built with the stabilizing rod going into the concrete you go ahead and spend thousands of dollars of other people's money when there's no need to when the job is already complete at hand.
