The entire song is calling out hypocrisy - "who are you to wave your finger, so full of it, eyeballs deep in muddy water, f***** hypocrite." He makes references to "kangaroo courts," talks about people putting lemon juice in their eye to make themselves cry because they are a big phony, and the title is a reference to the phrase "the pot calling the kettle black" which of course means someone is a hypocrite. That's why he keeps talking about black kettles in the song. The couple of mentions of *Mary Jane* in the song are like puns for the title. You could also take it to mean that the politicians passing anti-drug legislation are hypocrites as well.

You nailed it, Kristin. The lyrics are so on the nose (compared to other TOOL songs) that I find it inexplicable when reactors act confused. The cozened indigo line is the only perplexing one but it hits and fits melodically if not clearly.

At that point in their career, TOOL was having to deal with legal issues concerning record labels, and he was sick of all the lawyers. The hypocrisy of it all. Maynard James Keenan, who's the singer of Tool is also the singer in A Pefect Circle and in Puscifer. Besides that he also featured as guest singer in the track "Passenger" by Deftones and "Know Your Enemy" by Rage Against The Machine. If you heard him before it's probably from one of those. Also, has it was already the mentioned, the whole song is a metaphor for hypocrisy. Most lyrics Maynard writes are quite metaphorical. There's a few that can be take at face value, but a vast majority will have double and triple meanings to them.

But a deeper meaning requires a little knowledge of why judges wear a robe, and in some cases still do, wear a wig. Trapped is another name for "covering" in equestrian language. Long story short.... A judge pretends he is a knight (equites) in a kings court of equity. Most courts are administrative, and not under the judicial branch. Hence the "kangaroo" reference for kangaroo courts.

Very short explanation: song is directed towards an anti weed crusading attorney who later himself got busted. The Pot- from the term "the pot calling the kettle black" the pot is the antagonist in that saying and thus in the song.
The line " Eyeballs deep in muddy water " is a clever way to say you're definitely NOT Jesus! Meaning he can't walk on water he's eye hole deep in muddy water
Lemon juice is referring to an old theater trick to produce tears.
Kangaroo refers to a Kangaroo court, which means a court that has already made their decision before a defense can be heard.

First time stopping by the channel and lifelong Tool Army member. Welcome to the rabbit hole that is Tool, the greatest band ever, in my opinion. You won't regret this venture if you choose to take it, because Tool will take you on a journey with every song, as you don't listen to Tool, you experience it. Regarding their lyrics, Maynard is a genius. Many people will interpret the words in a few different ways, but a lot of the time at first listen, you'll be surprised to find out that what you think the song is about is completely different. There are so many other incredible things to mention about Tool, the time signature changes, Danny The Octopus, polyrhythms, and so much more. But I will say that Tool is an experience like no other and I hope you take the opportunity to delve into their masterfully crafted repertoire! Great reaction and I hope to see many more to come!

While true of a lot of Tool's songs this is one of their very straight-forward, easily understood, common-speaking ones. Beautifully, beautifully crafted lyrics.... but easy to understand (for English as a first language folks) since it's almost entirely common idioms/slang, except where it's a flat out statement like "fucking hypocrite".

It's a play on words of the old saying "the pot calling the kettle black" refering to general hypocrisy. Using the legislation against weed as a lyrical vehicle . Cozend indigo /lemon juice in your eye, is fake tears (indigo the colour is no longer extracted from the plant it is all synthetic now) , kanagroo courts are refered to (false proceedings given to pre-determined outcomes) , there's also a reference to the saying "don't throw stones if you live in glass house" which is again about hypocricy.

Maynard does not write songs that don’t include messages he hopes helps us or else as he said he would not write or make music. You're in good luck. Not only is the vocalist: Maynard James Keenan in another band.. he is with two other bands.
    A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.

They start with math, no matter what they say. Then they add poly-accentuation on top of polyrhythms. Everything is in minor key but not to attain the cliché "sadder sound." Instead they emphasize the flat note to draw emotion from it without actually writing a "sad" song. They often abuse the looping standards of most music to throw off the listener then Danny Carey adds wizardry throughout the drumming to confuse the listener further. Collectively brilliant, hard to explain without a degree in music and always fascinating to listen to. Very technical but approachable enough you don't need a degree to love it!

tool is a great introduction to wild world of complex music. Next steps down the wormhole are 'Animals as leaders' 'clown core' and 'snarky puppy' then it's into the absolutely batshit jazz level. Good luck on your journey.

It's a double meaning. Pot as in weed and pot as in "the pot calling the kettle black" which is referenced in the lyric "pissed all over my black kettle" and the recurring mentioning of hypocrites.
Kangaroo is a reference to a Kangaroo court.
Also, the lead singer is Maynard James Keenan and he is in 2 other bands. Along with Tool, he is in A Perfect Cirlce and Puscifer.

According to Adam Jones, the song is confirmed to be about hypocrisy and is a double entendre that refers to both drug intoxication and believing oneself to be above others, deriving from the phrase "the pot calling the kettle black"...

I interpret this song to be about the law and policy makers who rally to make drugs like pot illegal, while they themselves are often times guilty of things much worse. The "pot calling the kettle black," so to speak. A double entendre, I believe. Do, the "fat fingers", would be those that extend from the "long arm of the law", I believe. Discuss among yourselves. 🌀
