  • In this video, I talk about the ins and outs of the Mariners Learning System including explanation on how the proctored exam works. So glad I did this and be confident that you can do it as well. One correction in the video, I had mentioned I had over 15 years of experience on Lake Michigan. It's more like 18 or more when I actually did the math. Thanks!

    Congrats and welcome to the captains club. I took the same course a few years ago and would recommend it. They really prepare for the exam. Just a note for you, when you send the USCG your docs. do not miss a line or box that should be checked. They will notify you thus causing delays. Again, congrats Captain.

    Main barrier between OUPV and master of inspected vessels is just citizenship. Having the master’s license opens up a lot more job opportunities.

    SUNY Maritime grad and tug captain now. Back in the day I started my journey as a mariner with the Mariners Learning System. I went and got my six pack. It actually helped me along with my career. After I graduated there is this purgatory until you actually pass the license exam at the USCG. Because I had a six pack I was able to use that seatime towards my raise in grade for master. Which without the six pack would have been lost time. I highly recommend the program if you are a computer person.
    A pro tip: avoid licensitis. Or getting every license and endorsement that you can simply because you qualify. Unless you have a job you want to take that requires a bigger license . Meaning it's going to make you more money, avoid spending the time and money upgrading. The idea is to make the most amount of money with the least amount of license.

    • @BigLakeLittleBoat
      @BigLakeLittleBoat  6 місяців тому

    Brian, great job on this video…really helpful and honest. What happens if you don’t pass one of the exams..including chart plotting? Can you attempt them again, and within what period of time. Congratulations on your journey Captain!

    • @BigLakeLittleBoat
      @BigLakeLittleBoat  4 місяці тому

      I believe you can take an individual module again 2 more times. If you fail at least 3 of the modules at once you have to take the whole thing over. I believe you have to take the modules within 3 months and if you flunked more than 3 modules you have a to wait a certain period. Mariners Learning System had an 800 phone number and they always answer within business hours. I called there a few times myself with questions. The USCG NMC has an 800 number as well where you can call and ask questions, too. They are a subcontractor for the USCG, however, but they do a good job as well. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    • @BigLakeLittleBoat

    Howdy, I noticed that during my course with MLS, in the chart plotting section, they never taught calculating set & drift. I am about to take the test. Did they remove that from the test? Do you remember having to calculate set & drift at all? Thanks in advance!

    DO NOT get your OUPV if you want to make money......I got my master 25 ton 3 years ago and it was a complete waste of time and money. I live at the beach. The pay sucks, you are promised a bunch of lies and you get no benefits of any kind. I dont plan to renew it.

    • @BigLakeLittleBoat
      @BigLakeLittleBoat  Місяць тому

      I am not using it to make money. This was cheap enough to just better myself personally. I actually have updated this to a Masters anyways.
