Currently a 7.4 handicap, got there on my own. Would I love to take lessons? YES.
But for a 1 hour lesson I could pay for 3 rounds of golf, and there's a chance the coach isn't a good fit so there's also a risk.
If you're a smart person, you can use common sense and filter the good and bad instructors on UA-cam.
There's a few guys that I watch and they have really helped improve my game. It's really up to the golfer to get out and practice and play more.

All I want is a simple, repeatable golf swing. Something like turn back, turn through. Something that allows me to hit the middle of the clubface consistently. Does it really take a 17 step program to do that?

    • @damianlanigan

At least 17 if not 170! Just because it looks simple it doesn't mean it's easy to achieve - unless you're one of the lucky ones

Bobby Jones went quite inside on the backswing, then went on top of that plane on the downswing WHILE STILL HAVING AN INSIDE TO OUT CLUB PATH AT IMPACT. Same with Sam Snead.

Re: Shop Shape: I have been told I have no business shaping shots as a 10 handicap. But, it’s fun as hell. And more importantly, if gives me a visual goal for the shot that fits the hole/situation, and that takes me out of my head out of all the other noise. Which often ends up being a cool shot. I dunno. 🤷‍♂️

It’s almost like you need a golf degree in order to learn how to swing the club.😂😂😂

Maybe not to learn how to swing the club, but there's an argument to be made that you might need one to teach others how to do so

It would be interesting to get a lesson. I’m 43 and just started golf 5 months ago and started with a round of 108. I’m now a 4.6 handicap. Did it all on my own

Re: Ryp Stick shout out: I trained with them off season. And it took my average drive from 230s to the 260s. I’ll have one or two 290-300 bombs in a round. At 44yo, that’s a lot of fun.

Gary Martin Golf: he took 10 grams off his driver head and snap-hooked everything low left. Sometimes it's not the swing.

The club is not a hammer and the ball is not a nail BUT how you would use a hammer with a 3 foot long handle to hit a nail at floor level is a case study. Hogan's "waiter's tray" position at the top of the backswing looks similar. Moe Norman's address having close to impact orientation takes advantage of repeatability. Optimal and efficient are words that are applications of scientific technique. Having the club face square to line at impact is an art.

The word matchups is said a lot in the this video. Most coaches don’t address or even mention finding “YOUR” matchups.

Apart from very basic principles, onlne instruction is useless. Everyone's body and swing are unique and you need someone on the range (preferably the course) with you. I'd say 'the low point of the swing is target sde of the ball' is just about the only thing that's a universal truth - and obviously that's not true of driver and maybe 3 wood off the tee. Would love to know if anyone has others - a thought that is true for every singke golfer on the planet?
